Neat, but anyone else think that's a tad pricey?

Discussed ad nauseam in this thread: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=213950

Pay particular attention to Leonard's explanation of the costs involved - $7000 outlayed before one sale has even been made. You have to remember as well that they're not going to sell these to every iPAQ 2215 owner out there - maybe 5% of them if they're really lucky. These are custom mods - hot rodding for your PPC - and that never comes cheap.

Anyway, as in all things, you as a consumer have the power here: if they're too expensive, don't buy them.

Audiovox wanted 20 bucks, if I remember correctly, for new side grips for the Maestro. And they were plastic!

Wow -- those look amazing. 8O I suspect it'll be a low-volume item due to the cost, but for those who want to pimp up their 2215s... 8)

Really, you can't consider this hot-rodding your IPAQ. If your bumper kept on falling off the front and back of your car, would you consider yourself hotrodding it to fix the problem? Nope.

I'm just a little upset that HP doesn't offer something like this at a reasonable price.

They are actually very comfortable to hold. The thumb impressions make it very easy to hold onto the Ipaq........best of all....they stay ON! ;) I even traded in my wooden grips for a pair of these. Black is cool!

Getting a plastic replacement from HP = fixing the problem
Getting a red adonized aluminium metal replacement = hot rodding

I really hope that HP don't give up on the 2215 form factor. For me it's the best Ipaq, both sizewise and feature wise.

Give it 128MB and WiFi and I'm there, especially with cool red grips. :D

Nope, they are the same dimensions as the original. I have tried them in size sensitive cases such as metal cases and the Ipaq still fits perfect.

This may be hot rodding, but there are no alternatives out there :(

I'm sure to hell high waternot going to order grips that would fall off again, but at least I would...errrrr my minibest would look good in red.

I wonder I PPCTECHS would consider Ferrari Red to produce :D

I'm definitely getting one of these in a heartbeat when I get paid Thursday.

If you're a 2200 owner, I consider this a necessity than luxury........

Joel,

There are two existing screws that you remove and replace with longer ones that hold the grips in place. They shouldn't have any effect on your warranty.

I used 2-3 dabs of epoxy. Just enough to hold them on, but not so much that I couldn't pry them off. It worked since I was able to remove them without damaging the Ipaq.

Yeah, given the price point, there needs to be more testing of different cases. If this was tested with a Proporta metal case, that's one thing, but how can it be said that these grips work with the Vaja iVolution case when you've never seen the case and aren't aware that it's much smaller than the Proporta? Yes, we have both, and I'm telling you the proporta is much bigger.

So please, PPCTechs, this looks like a great product, but we need to know if it will work with our cases. Not if it should work, but if it does work. At this price point, it's a valid concern.

Sorry Pixelnose, it sure wasn't my intention to mislead you. I did state that I had tried it in metal cases. I didn't say that I had tried it in an iVolution case. Please forgive my ignorance in the tolerances of the iVolution case.

I have tried The 2200 Ipaq with the aluminum grips in a Proporta case, JavoEdge clear plastic case, and a Innopocket/Tipro Titanium case. If I had a Vaja iVolution I would try it for you to confirm one way or the other but I'm afraid I don't.

Just to clear this up, and maybe it's just the way I read your post...I don't have anything to do with PocketPCTechs, other than I have helped Leonard out a very slight bit with this project. I don't want you or anyone else to confuse anything I say as being the words of Pocket PC Techs. :) I think they have built a fairly decent reputation....without my help. :)

Oh good, sorry I had no idea what was posted elsewhere.

I think you will find that PPC Tech are pretty reasonable people, and will do all they can to find an answer. I know that before I even replied Leonard emailed me to see if I had an iVolution case that I could try mine in so I think he is trying to resolve the issue for you. We sure don't need any dead horses around here. :)

For those that are not aware, HP will send replacment side gips to you at no charge if yours have come loose or fallen off. However, they will eventually fall off again I am sure.

I have not had the problem with the side grips myself, but had HP send replacments just in case.

Need to start saving for these gizmos...cool! Also loved the wood!

They will, and have. I just put my second set of replacements on my 2215 last week after the first replacements started falling off. I had an awful time on the phone with HP too just to get the replacements, funny that it was a piece of cake 3 months ago when I ordered the first set. They did ship them to me the next day though, that was cool. Still, with my hardware warranty running out in July (meaning I'll have to start paying for the crappy replacements) and the awful experience on the phone, I was thrilled to see the announcement from PPCTechs. mmm blue anodized aluminum... stylin'!

My grips are just starting to slip off so I was very excited to see the new metal grips. However, after reading the posts here and seeing Dale's wood grips I am wondering if anyone out there would be willing to put together a set of those for me. I would be willing to pay between $30 and $50 USD for a pair. Please let me know if anyone out there is able and interested in manufacturing some for me. Thanks.
