<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://pocketputty.aleq.cz/' target='_blank'>http://pocketputty.aleq.cz/</a><br /><br /></div>Looking for a low-cost SSH solution? A Pocket PC developer has made a first port of the freeware <a href="http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/">PuTTY</a> SSH client available. It looks like it's a little rough on the edges, and it only supports WM2003 for now, but I'm glad to see more remote access solutions available for the Pocket PC.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20040216-PocketPutty.gif" />

This is going to be nice to use to quickly jump in and out of a machine! Can't wait to try it later on tonight.

Too bad it only has 2003 support for now. I could really make use of this with my E740.

I'll have to keep watching for 2002 support.

Well, it's more-or-less a first version. But thanks for pointing that out; I'll update my post.

Support for Pocket PC 2000/2002 will be added as noted on PocketPuTTY homepage forums :)

I'm impressed. if they have the ability to save commands and paste them that would rock.

I've used putty for a long time and it hasn't disappointed me.

Awesome! This works quite well. Good job, Aleq! :D I tried it out and it works quite well. Only 1 small enhancement needed that I've noticed so far. I'll have to post that to the forum.

Am I missing something? I can't find the download on this site for WM 2003 anywhere. Anyone have the download link?

Go to the announcement in the first forum, there is it.....

Warning though: I use a transcriber keyboard: i could not authenticate. On the external keyboard, it was no problem.....

Keeping it under 500 words and not using the word "Google", could someone tell me what PuTTY is? I've seen it before, but don't know what it does. Thanks!

I use Putty on the PC for logging into a Unix webserver and by using commands can do some maintenance. Functions very similar to a DOS window but remotely. I'm assuming this will do much the same as the desktop version.

Hope that helps.

PuTTY is a terminal emulator that supports not only telnet, but more importantly the SSH protocol. SSH stands for Secure SHell, and is a much better alternative to remote management than telnet, which transmits everything unencrypted, including the password you might type at a login prompt.

Well, basically a SSH-client allows your desktop to act as a terminal for a Linux/Unix system. For the SSH-server, you are the same as it's keyboard and screen.

Normally it is used by administrators of the server to log into the server to find out what the ^%$&^%*&^% is going wrong this time, and how on earth it is possible to solve it while staying behind your own terminal......

To give you an example: the dutch PocketPC-club server is located in Amsterdam. I live 100 kilometers away, and the other admins around 200 kilometers. If something goes awry, we log in, and try to fix it, without having to travel to Amsterdam.

By having PocketPutty, we can even work while being on the move through GPRS:)

Is there any functional difference between this and PockeTTY (http://www.dejavusoftware.com/pocketty/)?

it's free for one. and PuTTY has a long and glorious reputation as a lightweight yet robust SSH client.

PockeTTY stops functioning after 5 minutes of connection unless you pay 40 bucks. Putty is free. I'd say free is more functional when I look in my wallet and see nothing but Papa John's reciepts

It's about &@%^&^% time! :D I have been waiting for this since I had a e740. Just can't believe that it took til now to get a free SSH client. 80 dollars for a ssh client? No way! And since this is based on putty, it should be a snap to move my keys over to it. WHOO HOO! SSH Hear I come!

Two months ago it was $20 :rock on dude!: and PuTTY didn't exist for the Pocket PC at that stage. If it wasn't 50% off, I would have waited for something cheaper (like this ) to omce along.

Works great. Pity that the SIP obscures the bottom 30% or so of the terminal!

Can you get it to work with the SIP ?? My server-passwords all contain some non-alpha-numeric characters, and do not get accepted. When i use my external keyboard, it works fine.....

I'll have to look at this. You can post it to bug reports at pocketputty.aleq.cz
