I have an ipaq 1945 and I have been using it for a little over a month now. The only programs that I have downloaded to use on it are pocket e-sword and a finance program (msmsmoney) to keep track of my checking account. When I pull up the system memory utility it shows me that I have 45 mb allocated to program files and 38 mb full. I even took off the money program and it looks like I hardly freed up any memory!! What is going on. I am afraid I am going to use up my memory soon!!! I thought 64 mb was a goodly amount of memory,... I have a 128 mb multimedia card I am using for music, should I find a way to mack up stuff on it?

The Bible and commentary files can be large and you would have installed a lot of those to eat up 38meg. The PPC is similar to the desktop with Temp files, so you may have a fair amount of those, not to mention web page files. I've only got 32meg and keep the two bible versions, reading plans and a large commentary , Pocket Quicken, Sprite Backup program, Agenda Fusion, MS Reader, Flex Wallet, Handy Launcher, SpaceMaker, mNotes, HandyMenu, about 800 contacts, 800 calendar entries and several PWord and PExcel files in main memory and I have 11 meg left. I've put Adobe Reader and Palbum Suite on the SD card. Wish I could help more. Good Luck

If you are browsing online using your PDA Pocket IE is caching visited sites in memory. You can clear these out and regain a chunk of memory. Just click on the tools option on the bottom of IE, click on options and then delete files. Hope this helps.

I was having problems with my temp files getting extremely large at one point as well. I got a program though that clears out the temp files whenever you do a soft reset, it tends to help keep memory usage lower.

Get yourself a copy of WIMR? (http://mypaq.net/mysoftware/wimr/index.shtml) It will help you track down where your problems are...

Ok, I installed wimr, I cannot find anything super huge, what is more, once I installed it, more memory was taken up!!!

I am now up to 39 mb with only one program installed that did not come with the device. Oh and the e-sword program, I only installed the base program on the main memory, the only bible I use with it is on a sd memory card.

Any more ideas?

Edit: Ok, wow. Someone mentioned soft booting, and so I did it,... and now 40 mb are free,... Should I be doing this more often? Is this normal?

A soft reset, every now and then, never hurts! Whenever my device gets "sluggish", I hit the reset!

The OK/X button on a pocketpc does not close a program. It simply minimizes it. A soft reset closes everything. The ppc OS is supposed to manage the memory usage and close what it needs to close to keep things running. There are a fair number of third party "closers" for $ and free that would close things when you want to without a soft reset.

See this from Mr. Hansberry:

It's called SpaceMaker. Do a google search on it. My little hourglass thing covers up the software developer's name.
