View Full Version : ActiveSync keeps activating my PPC

Apologies if this is a FAQ but I have tried searched without success.
Is it normal for my Ipaq 2210 to periodically turn itself on and try to sync when it is docked in its cradle and my PC is switched on?
I am running ActiveSync 3.7.1 / Win2K SP4
I would like to leave my PPC docked but turned off - if I'm not using it then I don't see why it should keep waking up.
This has been winding me up ever since I've had my Ipaq so any help would be welcome!

mine does that, too.

There must be some way round it though, surely?
It is really annoying for me as my PC is usually on all the time and I only have one charger. So to charge my Ipaq I often have to unplug the power lead from the docking station.
I'm hoping someone will post here and point me to a really obvious setting I can change so I feel stupid but at least my problem is solved :)

I think that it will automatically turn on at midnight to change over the appointments, that's usually been my experience. Mind you, sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't.

Mine turns on every 15-20 minutes or so - guaranteed. If I turn it back off it will do the same.
It doesn't seem to matter if it is paired as a guest.

Well, I've experienced this behavior with every Pocket PC I've owned. I don't think there's a workaround other than disconnecting it from the PC or killing the ActiveSync processes.
Mind you, 99% of the time this behavior is fine with me -- I just leave the Pocket PC on, cradled, and ActiveSynced, and I turn off the unit's backlight.

Doesn't it annoy you that the unit is getting used when it shouldn't be though? Even without the backlight a lot of the circuitry will be drawing power. PDAs have a finite lifespan and wearing them out unnecessarily seems a shame.
So it seems that this is either a design decision or a bug that nobody has bothered fixing? I can't think of a good reason off the top of my head why a unit should keep turning itself on so it sounds like a bug to me...
It would be great if we could get someone from Microsoft to explain why this happens. ie: whether this is an ActiveSync issue, vendor specific etc.

Nah, the battery dies out long before the unit itself does. My old 3650 still "works", even though it doesn't hold a charge. Besides, PDAs have clever memory management, and having continuous ActiveSync is a really convenient thing. :)

I'd guess the causes are complex, partially by design, partially buggy.

Funny story... to give a little background, my bedroom is connect to where my computer (and ipaq) is by a door. Anyway, I was 'with' my girlfriend one night, and all of a sudden she sees the whole doorway light up, and it freaks her out. Turns out, my Ipaq is trying to get a glimpse of what's going on
How about someone put this on the front page as a new topic... embarassing moments with your PPC :D

My PPC has the same issues... even though I have my PPC to sync manually it continiously looks for a connection... but since I have checked off (in active-sync on my PPC) "use mobile schedule ro sync with this PC" I have not had it happen again... well that was only the other day... so I guess we will see...

The same problem has been annoying me for months, but I think I've found a solution - different from the one Ripper014 suggested above.
Open Tools / Options in ActiveSync 3.7. On the Schedule tab change the Desktop setting to Manual. I did this a couple of hours ago, and so far it's working a treat (mine usually powers up a couple of times an hour).
