My iPaq 4350 has developed an odd problem with its shortcut buttons. Button 1 will get corrupted--it will give the "Error locating the target filename or opening the shortcut" with no change having been made in the button's settings or the target application. Going into settings and re-binding the target app fixes the problem, until I use button 2, after which button 1 is recorrupted. Button 1 has a similar "cross-corrupting" effect on button 2, and 3 and 4 have the same interrelationship. Effectively, this means I have two useable shortcut buttons instead of four.

The problem is unchanged even after a hard reset.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Any ideas how to fix it?

I'd be calling for a replacement unit if I were you. Sounds like a hardware issue if it's still around after the reset.

Wow - definitely a hardware problem. 8O My speculation would be a partially corrupt ROM chip...

Yes, definitely a hardware problem. Called HP, they sent an overnight mailer, and after a three-day turnaround, including less than four hours at their TX facility (per Airborne's tracking data), the iPaq returned, wiped of all data (I had a backup) and...with the self-corrupting button "feature" fully intact. A highly individualised "Dear user" memo accompanied the device, detailing the "extensive diagnostic, repair, and cleaning" procedures performed by the dedicated technicians of HP, and explained to me that I must be imagining that there was anything wrong with the product.

That's when I realised the full scope of my hardware problem: it all began when I bought HP hardware married to the PPC OS! A quick switch to Sharp's SL-5600 hardware has completely resolved the problem!
