Every time I turn the unit on it asks for a password - how do you turn this off.
I like to have it ask a password when I connect it to my laptop - is there a way to keep this but not have the password appear when I turn on the unit?

Start>Settings>Password
AFAIK, you can change the length of time for it to come on, but if you turn it off completely you will not get the password prompt when you connect the device.

I go start>settings and there are no options for password - just "buttons", "input", "menus", "owner information", "sounds and notifications" and "today"
I can't find where it turn it off

I downloaded the microsoft password program from their website and once it installed it allowed me to change the password

Glad to hear it! Have you installed any apps in the past that replaced the standard Password Control Panel Icon and then perhads uninstalled the software?
