Hi guys. Can anyone here comment about the VGA 640x480 mode that the e800 can run in? I saw on some site that only a few thoshiba programs can take advantage of that mode and if the app cant, it will run in a small window on the top left corner. Is this true? Do third party apps out there support this high res mode or is it just pretty useless for now?

Out of the box, Toshiba limits the apps you can use the 480x640 mode with to the built-in ClearVue suite. However, ResFix (http://home.comcast.net/~swdeveloper/) unlocks the functionality to work with the rest of WM2003.

As to compatibility with WM2003 and other apps: I'd say that WM2003 itself works fine, although the controls are a little small; most productivity apps run fine, again with smaller controls (but take advantage of the extra real-estate); PIE and ebook readers work fantastic (supports both large, sharp text or fine, very small text); and some games run fine but others don't know how to use the additional space (and only occupy the upper-left corner).

As for my e805, I leave it in 480x640 mode all the time. 8) I'll be glad to see "official" support, but for now I'm pretty happy with the setup.

Is it true that the battery runs down quicker in 640x480 mode?

That's what I've heard, although I can't confirm as I never really used the unit in 240x320 for more than about an hour after initially getting it. I've been generally OK with battery life (I'd estimate ~ 4-5 hours with WiFi off at "auto brightness", although I recharge frequently), although I just got an extended battery too.

Out of the box, Toshiba has the e 800 locked down so only the included ClearVue aps work in VGA mode. However, with only 2 free utilities (ResFix 1, and the "undead hack") you can open your e800 up to the wonderful world of VGA. Or, you can pay 10.00 for ResFix 2, and get landscape ability and a few other nice extras too; it's well worth it IMO. Many, many aps can take full advantage of VGA resolution. All ebook readers, most of the native aps such as PIE, word, excel, picture viewer, etc., and many great 3rd party apps take full advantage of VGA too. Pocket Informant, Text Maker and Pocket TV, for example. There are really too many for me to list here. But, the following link will take you to a full listing of VGA resources and aps, themes, etc.

Of course, there are some programs that are hard coded to the pixel size of the screen, especially a lot of games based on bitmap images, that will only cover a tiny 1/4 of your screen if opened up in VGA resolution. But it's no big deal. If you want to run those apps, just switch to QVGA. Or, you could choose to leave the e800 in QVGA by default and just switch for, say, ebooks and the internet, or for any other ap for which you really want more information per screen. Either way you handle it, the VGA capability is fantastic!

So you need a nice fat extended battery to get 4~5 hours on the e800? Darn...thats quite disappointing

No, no! That's with the standard battery. The extended battery was a purchase afterwards. With the extended battery, I read ebooks for about 3-4 hours yesterday and used about 25% of the battery. :)

By-the-way, Nyditot beta works with the VGA, too, as does ResSwitch (can be found on the e800 site on Brighthand).

Please take a look at this review as I think it will clear up a lot of misconceptions about the e800:

Boris4098tnt, I would recommend that you try MyVGA. It is free, and does even more than ResFix. All you need do is register on PocketPCTools. Check it out here: http://www.pocketpctools.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=index&c=8

All programs that can run in higher resolution yes.

Pocket IE, pocket outlook, contacts etcetera all work in high res, the book readers do, Pocket MVP, Pocket TV etcetera etcetera all do as well.

When I register on that web site, I never get confirmation email for it. So, if anyone can email me or post it on this forum. I would really appriciate it guys. By the way, my email is [email protected]
