I have a Viewsonic v36 and have no idea how to change the background. any ideas?

Sure!

There are pre-packaged "Themes" which change the color scheme and background images of the entire Today screen. Just download the TSK file and put it in the My Documents folder on the Viewsonic. Then go to
Settings - > Today. You can get these all over the web, but start with www.pocketpcthemes.com

You can also use your own JPEG images, and this option is available in the Settings -> Today menu as well.

I tried using an image as a backround but it is sort of white-washed when it shows on the today screen.

Yeah, if you don't make your own theme and just choose a pic via the Today settings, then the system will automatically fade it (I'd say it's about 50% transparent).
