<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3451207.stm">http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3451207.stm</a><br /><br />"A proud US father and self-confessed engineering "geek" has named his son after a computer software term. Jon Blake Cusack, from Holland, Michigan, told local newspapers the US practice of adding "Junior" or "II" after a boy's name was too common. So, when his son was born last week, he decided on the name Jon Blake Cusack 2.0, as if he were a software upgrade."<br /><br />Poor kid. I am a "III" and took enough grief over that in school. To make matters worse, I had credit problems because, fresh out of school, somehow much of my dad's debt wound up on my credit report and it took some work to clear up. Things like III and Jr. are fairly common. I can see "2.0" getting dropped from this kids name and causing confusion. And no - not everyone that checks credit uses social security numbers. I've even filled in online forms that have Jr and III suffixes available. I doubt 2.0 will be there for him.<br /><br />Have a good weekend all!

Just think about it, all those online forms that have a drop-down box for Jr., Sr., II, III, etc. will have to update

Interestingly, the Hindi (native language of India) word for son is beta. Is it any surprise that India is taking over the IT world by storm? ;-)

I read about this somewhere before and I thought it was the funniest thing! Maybe his next offspring will be named Version 2.1r3 that includes minor enhancements, bug fixes and known issues.

What happens if he has to scrap the codebase and start over? &lt;gulp> 8O

They were saying that the son of Jon Blake Cusack 2.0 should be called Jon Blake Cusack 3.0

In Ireland you are often named after the grandfather rather than the father. So the problem with junior and senior doesn't really arise. In my case I was named after my grandfather on my fathers side. I only meet him once, or so I am told. I don't remmember anything about the meeting although I do have some black and white pictures of the event.

It is a nice tradition and one which I would probably follow, if I had any children.

If you think about it the father is naming his son after his father. Which means when he uses his son's name he is reminded of his own father. Which for me is kind of nice. To name my child (if I had one) after myself smacks of conceit. But that is only my opinion and I hope I don't offend anyone with my opinion.

ps before anyone berates me for my poor spelling and writing, it is very late and I have just finished off a very nice bottle of wine. A poor excuse but one which I am sticking to. :-)

Well, then, he would have to work on another interface with his wife and get right into production.

Instead of calling his son Jon Blake Cusack 2.0 why not Jon Blake Cusack Lite and then his father would be Jon Blake Cusack Pro. He would then end up as Jon Blake Cusack Standard. :splat:

I guess when he gets old enough and his ability to move around is restricted, he could just call himself Jon Blake Cusack Desktop and his son Jon Blake Cusack Mobile.

This could have sure helped out around the George Foreman household. Hey George, no I mean you George, not you George. Good grief!

Er, actually, I'm not sure there's any easy way to say this but, well, um, that portion of humanity that doesn't live in North America (otherwise known somewhat insensitively as "most people") find the whole practice of appending Roman numerals to people's names when not in the context of emperors, kings, popes etc. to be a bit, well, odd.
(Rule of thumb: the numbers are useful for people who are referred to as part of a series without using surnames).

Never mind, back to the good bit:

I'd been wondering when someone would start using version numbers for people...the question is, what will constitute a major release as opposed to a minor revision?
And then there's service packs: there I think we're on firmer ground. A substantial update of an existing release, obviously.
For instance "Michael Jackson v1.0 SP 8".

Aha! That's where the minor revision numbers come in.

But of course, this system remains flawed, since you still have a virtual certainty of frequent duplication among the human population as a whole.

So what we really need is something like a guid or similar probably-unique value...

This is where .NET strong names are a Godsend obviously. What you need to do is type sn -k keyPair.snk before initiating conception.

Easy really.

Yeah, I heard something similar on the radio where it was asked if the kid was bad and was punished and then changed his behavior was he then called Jon Blake Cusack 2.01?

Either was he is definitely an improvement over his old man! 8)

If nothing else, it should make it easy for the kid to remember his age: After 1 year he'll be JBC2.1, after 2 years JBC2.2, etc...

Speaking from personal experience, they'll probably going to call him "John"

Anyway, how many service packs do you think he'll have racked up by the end of his operational lifespan? 2.0 SP 1,620.

Perhaps a psychologist can perform a flash upgrade to 3.0

Well, kids have little reason to tease someone with a Jr suffix... all it takes is for one kid to find out that there is a "2.0" in this kid's name and he'll be toast.

Jake 2.0 is on UPN. I saw the pilot. It wasn't bad, but I haven't seen any episodes since.

Ed shouldn't feel bad about being a III.

I have a friend who's a V and his son is a VI - I took to calling the boy "six" right away.

I agree. If (when?) another kid finds out about this, they won't be calling him "Jon." They'll call him "2" (or if they're mean, "Number 2" or a crude equivalent).

Being from Europe I'm a bit curious about this. Is the numeral part of the name "official" - that is, do you in an official id like your passport have a name like "name surname III"?

Here in denmark there is an official list (http://www.km.dk/hyppige_spm/fornavne.htm) of names allowed and if the name you want for your child is not on it, you can only use that name after it has been approved by the ministry of ecclesiastical affairs.

As an example, if you're "native" to denmark, a name like Jesus is not on the list.

I think that today, the reason for the law is to protect the ones who has to live with the name from silly things, like what the thread is about.

Oleander - The suffix on the name (jr., III) are officially part of a persons name if its on the birth certificate.

I think an official list of names is a good idea - it would save us from some really screwy names that (especially) celebrities have pushed on us, such as Chyler and other non-traditional names.

Although, it would never fly in the US, for better or for worse.

I think the 2.0 is kinda neat!! :way to go:

The bigger problem this boy may have (IMO ) is w/ his surname.

My brother Jon went thru years ( into his late teens ) of mild torment by friend and foe alike w/ the nic he was ALWAYS labeled with.

Think most here know what that nic is. It wasn't very nice. :|
