View Full Version : iPAQ sound capabilities, 48khz?

Way back when I had my iPAQ 3670 I read that it was only capable of playing up to 44.1khz so I downsampled my movies from 48khz to 44.1khz so the cpu didn't have to.

Now I have a 2215 and I don't know if it can really play 48khz or not. I asked the same question on Brighthand's 2200 forum and someone linked to this:

http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/acrobat/datasheets/UDA1380_3.pdf

I don't know if the 2215 uses this Phillips chip or not.

Can someone tell me where to get detailed specs on the different iPAQ's, especially the 2215? A friend has a 3800 and I'd like to know what the sound spec's are on it also.

Thanks!

Very interesting, but I don't see where this answers my questions.

I think you'll find that site does, you just have to read very much.

For example:

...PDAudio-CF Interface Card (Hardware)
Using PDAudio-CF... ...(Note that even though the PDAudio-CF supports sampling rates to 192 KS/s, some PDAs currently only support sampling rates to 96 KS/s. Almost all desktop and laptop PCs will support 192 KS/s.)...

Edit:

...Palm Compatibility
At the moment, none of the PDAs that run Palm OS have the computing power and hardware interfaces to host PDAudio. When one becomes available, we will consider developing a version of PDAudio for it....

He he he...

Call me dense and stubborn, but I don't think that Core-Sound link applies to my question.

From that link:

"PDAs For DVD Quality Recording (24bit, up to 96 KS/s)

HP/Compaq iPAQ (3100-, 3600-, 3700-, 3800-series) using 206 MHz StrongArm CPU, with dual CF or PC Card expansion packs (see below)"

I know, as much as I know anything about this subject, that the 3600 series will only play up to 44.1khz, any more than that and the playback is downsampled by the cpu.

I'm not interested in DVD quality recording. I want to know if my 2215 can really play 48khz. From what I've read about the Phillips UDA1380 I believe it can and so could my old 3950. Detailed sound specs are just about impossible to get from HP. I even registered in their developers section. The best information I've gotten so far is from www.handhelds.org and that Phillips UDA1380 datasheet. I still haven't found what sound chip the 3800 series uses.

Using Pocco Software's "Wichita" you'll be able to playback up to 24-bit WAV (linear PCM, uncompressed) files at up to 96 KS/s. So yes, you can play back 48 KS/s files on your 2215.

You'll find a link to Wichita on our Web site.

Thanks Len. What about the 3800?

Yes, the entire iPAQ product line should be capable of playing the same word widths (up to 24-bits) and sample rates (up to 96 KS/s), though the 3800- and 3900-series SD card interface is pretty slow, so for those models store your high-res audio on CF memory/Microdrive card or PC Card (PCMCIA) hard drives, but not on SD cards.

I don't know if the application software has anything to do with it, but using PPC2002 version of WMP, I cannot playback file with 48kHz sampling rate. Once PPC2003 is loaded, the new 9-series player is able to playback the same file.

The hardware can handle up to 48 KS/s, so it's likely that the problem is WMP. We recommend Pocco Software's Wichita.
