odd activesync problem Help please

After 3 years with the PPC I thought I had seen it all but I now have activestync connecting but refusing to sync with my 3970. I get the green disc icon, the word 'connected' but nothing else. I have reloaded AS 3.7, have done a hard reset and restore on the PPC but nothing works.
Any ideas before I do hard reset and a bit-by-bit reload?
