Several of these were under NDA and we can not disclose that information until it is officially released. In our quest to bring our readers the latest on PDA and technology news we ask many vendors about upcoming products and roadmaps. Some vendors bring us in on those new products after we agree to not disclose the information until it is ready for public consumption. This allows us time to get review outlines written and formulate upcoming articles. Other times the vendor place possum and says there is no new news and that's Ok too."<br /><br />Unfortunately, they don't have any pics. I'm still waiting for that authoritative picture of the unit...

The more I look at that old and ugly shadowy picture the more I start to think its real 8O

Well a 2200 that's phone enabled would be pretty cool...but a 4100 series that's phone enabled and has Bluetooth and WiFi would be AWESOME! I hope HP goes that route...

The thing that worries/concerns me about this device is that it looks awesome but, at least in Austrlaia, gettign approvals to use the phone component can take an eternity. The product might be ready from HP but could take months before you can buy it.

Good to hear that the device is like a 2200 and the keyboard is removable. Might make me think about not buying an XDA...

I'm not sure, but I believe he is talking of the banners that say "Congradulations! You are a winner! Click here to claim your prize..."
Are there people on the internet that will actually fall for that one?

Well, I hate to encourage them, but I clicked on one just for fun...having "won" countless other times but never clicking. I was offered lots of other offers in our favorite popups! For only the price of info about my entire life I could win a... :) No thanks!

It said something like:

Congratulations! You are visitor #876331 to this site. Click to claim your prize.

It was funny because (I know that number is not the number, it was close) I know that it was the same number across all six websites. So, it must be the same company!

It was on the site that is linked... MaximumPDA I guess? (I'm NOT going back, you don't see anything like that here at Pocket PC Thoughts :D )

It was for laughs.

If I see another one I'm gonna give 'em Jason's e-mail address

Three things I hope for the 6300 line:

1) It isn't nearly as ugly as the pictures posted on various sites recently

2) The colour is much closer to the silver of current and past iPaqs than the dark gray of the aforementioned pictures

3) It includes WiFi, BT (WidComm Stack, of course) and Nevo. I don't care so much for GSM/GPRS as this particular geographical location has sucky coverage from all local carriers anyways.

Dont forget the RIM blackberry component that is roumoured to be included.... having your email pushed to you would be cool.

HP have also got the iPAQ blackberry (whatever that is) which presumably already includes the technology.

I'd rather have GPRS/GSM than Nevo - sorry ctmagnus

I don’t know what the deal is with the "You won a prize!" banner. I am still waiting to see it. Can you tell if it is from Tribal Fusion? We use the same ad network as PPCT but I supplement it with Rydium for unsold spaces. I really hate those sucker banners and try to stop them. I apologize for lame banners; I’m trying to figure out who to yell at.

Anyway, not sure about the 6300 picture that’s been floating around I was unable to locate one at CES and really doubt they would have one there. HP would not comment on the picture that was posted here a couple of weeks ago.

Oh, and was that a POP Up? Those are not allowed.

Bill over at MaximumPDA is collecting all the info he can on the iPAQ 6300."
Did anyone else pick up this from the bottom of the article:

"The death of the 4100 series

While investigating the 6300 series product we learned that the 4100 series is not long for this world. We were not able to obtain any additional information as to the why or when but I would speculate lackluster sales in a burgeoning Pocket PC market place coupled with too many iPAQ product lines. I suspect they will continue sales until the second quarter when they announce the 6300 series. It’s shame because I really liked the 4100 series product. "

Yeah. I think this is mad. I reckon they should have the 6300 series replace the 5500 series, not the 4000 series. I also reckon the 4000 series should replace the 1900 series if you want to reduce the line...

The 4000 series is almost (at least IMHO) the ultimate PDA with regards to functionality and form...

Ah remember the days when we had reasonably priced iPaqs?

We will be saying that all too soon.
In June the 2200 and the 5500 will also meet their demise.

So what will be left?

4300 and the 6300, both high end PPCs.

If it does have Nevo (plus the other goodies), I'll buy it quicker than you can say "200 remote controls rule my life"...

I'm hoping that someone will start to reveal the goodies that this device will have. (Not the old rumour in a new packaging, thank you.)

There's not that many days left until March -- the time of release for this iPAQ (I hope). Although, this year is a leap year, which means one extra day in between February and March...

I understand from someone at HP that the ship date has slipped by six weeks. At least you are in the US. Here we get everthing about six weeks after it is released there! The six week slip means it will probably be late april before we see it in the US.

Oh, and was that a POP Up? Those are not allowed.--Bill

Bill,

The pop up came from the site that I was sent to AFTER I clicked on the banner. It was at the bottom of the page. I looked through my history, and I think this is the site I was taken to: http://www.theuseful.com/reg_e.htm?promo_name=reward&tmp_sequence=77-33-9&promo_id=1331&user_ref_id=575523 I'm not sure the link will be helful or not.

I doublechecked the popup and the URL begins with theuseful address.

Paul Martin
02-05-2004, 02:52 PM
Ahh, success. I found the banner. In the corner, it said "AdSolution". I was able to capture the URL before it disappeared. Here's the initial referrer URL:

http://red01.as-us.falkag.net/dat/dlv/aslcount.html?cmd=url&&rdm=47954996&dlv=28,2355,8452,8125,21790&kid=8125&chw=&tcs=&bls3=111000A&bls4=0100078454&uid=1&dmn=&scx=1024&scy=768&scc=16&jav=1&sta=,,,,7,,,,en-us,&iid=8452&bid=21790&dat=http%3A//p.theuseful.com/1334/

After it landed on the page, here's the URL: http://www.theuseful.com/reg_e.htm?promo_name=reward&tmp_sequence=86-34-9&promo_id=1334&user_ref_id=578785

Oddly, many of the banner ads are not displaying. There's just a grey box. However the URL for whatever is not showing up is still active. This time, I did not "see" the congrats banner, just opened the link in a new window. Hope this helps, Bill.

Thanks for the Banner tip. I think thats from Rydium, Tribal Fusion baanners ussualy have tribalfusion in the URL. Time to send an angry email off.

4100 series demise is a rumor; I did not get confirmation on that. We were speaking with a well placed accessory manufacturer and they indicated that they were no longer going to continue development of an accessory for that series due to its lifespan in the channel.

I'm still hoping the 6300 ipaq looks like a Wanda not a banana like like the Hitachi PPCPE.

Because if it's not, the XDA II could take a while to save moolah for :?

Or I might be tempted to go to the dark side and get a Treo 600
I hate to admit it but I like the formfactor, but I haven't seen the screen in action.

As for banner ads, my friend won a Canon EOS10D from dpreview.com. How bout them ads!

Umm... no, I'm in really in the EU (see also: Finland - the small country between Sweden and Russia). But the statement you made about six weeks late seems to be in effect here, though. At least when considering the iPAQ 2210 that arrived here around a month after it's intro in the US of A.

Regarding the release date, I hope you're wrong! Nothing personal, however.

I wonder if the new 6000 series iPAQ looks like this

http://www.canadapocketpc.com/h5600_2_small1.jpg

Does anybody remember the "5600" series iPAQ’s? Maybe HP decided to sell one each year instead of all at once as was thought by Compaq? That would make a really useful device people are akin to, and they would not have to reinvent the wheel.

http://www.nobi.com/logs/kiyo/archives/image/h5600.jpg

and maybe it is CDMA and GPRS as seen on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3044334772). That would also make since, as Sprint had talked about HP building a device for their networks. Who knows???

Damn it, you had me all excited. I knew this wasn’t the 6300 but I thought it would be cool to have and play with, and then I realized it was an old auction. :( I was all ready to buy it…wish I would have saw it back when it was up for sale.

Usually, schematics and documentation start to appear a while before the entry of a new Pocket PC to the market. Thus far, no such information on the rumoured new iPAQ has come to light.

This tells me that new device is at least several weeks away.

Secondly, there is an update to Windows Mobile 2003 slated for the middle of the year (the so called Update 1). I can't imgine HP (or any other OEM) releasing a new device such a short time beofre a significant OS update is made available.

Also, I was talking to the Microsoft Mobility Unit Manager in Austrlaia the other day (at Melbourne Pocket PC User Group (http://www.melbourneppc.org)) and he belived that the device was "some time away". The time was measuarable in months, not weeks.

Finally, while HP makes great Pocket PCs (at least I think so) they have never made and sold telephones. This is a new venture for them and I suspect that they will be taking this release very slow so that they deliver a great product and just a competent one. In Australia an XDA costs about $1350 AUS, double the cost of a high end cell phone or a pretty good Pocket PC. This is a substantial investment and people will not lay out that sort of cash for a "competent" phone. They will expect a brilliant device.

Yeah, the same happened to me when I first saw it. A forum was wondering how this person had gotten hold of the iPAQ and the memory etc. I followed the link and found that the bidding had already finished. 0X Whatever the next device is from HP, a lot of people seem to be wishing for a phone enabled device. And whether they purchase it (I suppose) depends on style, abilities, and price. I certainly hope the next one is available on the Sprint network

Yes, and sometimes the HP support website starts to list the device prior to release. Just remember that we're still in the beginning february, and we do not know if the device ever will come out... :|

A Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 End User Update 1 on the horizon? *gasps for air* Wonder what that will bring and fix...

I believe that HP will target the iPAQ 6300 at business consumers, as with the 5000-series. (It would be nice to have the biometric scanner on the 6300 as was planned with some of the 5600 iPaqs, btw.) The benefits of a WiFi, GSM GPRS and Bluetooth device are many in terms of connectivity for the average business user. Whether or not the user can effectively use them to his benefit is another question...

I'm expecting the 6300 to sell well over here in Europe where the demand for that sort of phones are big. Just have a look at the article that Arne Hess published here: http://www.ppcw.net/index.php?itemid=1772

What is not listed there is EDGE, the "faster GPRS". HP should somehow implement EDGE into the device since it will seems to be even much better than GPRS in tests. The phone operators are already rolling out EDGE services here (in my country) although the phones supporting it are few for the moment. What is interesting to read that the number of subscribers that an EDGE station can handle is bigger and also the speed is faster in comparison to GPRS.

Our HP rep said that the first model of the 6300 will be for T-Mobile and have GPRS. He said HP is working on another model for AT&T that will have EDGE, although AT&T's will be released much later in the year.

Sounds like it's mostly up the carrier as to what they want to release on their networks.
