"Nintendo Unveils Dual-Screen Game Product

Reuters
Nintendo Co. Ltd., after months of hinting it would roll out a new game product in 2004, has taken the wraps off Nintendo DS, a portable video game system with dual side-by-side screens.

The company said it would hold back most details of the new product until the games industry's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles this May, but said it has already begun talks with game publishers around the world about developing software for the new device.

The unit will feature two three-inch LCD screens, dual processors and up to one gigabit of semiconductor memory. It is scheduled for launch by the end of this year and will be marketed alongside the company's GameCube home gaming console and Game Boy Advance handheld device, Nintendo said.

Nintendo was expected by industry players to offer some sort of new handheld product this year to compete with Sony Corp's PSP, an advanced handheld gaming device set for launch by the end of the year. Sony already dominates the console games market with its PlayStation 2.

Nintendo said the dual screens on the new game machine would let players see the same game from two different perspectives, or see game action on one screen while looking at a map of the game environment on the other."

Now that is a cool idea in my opinion. I would like to see the size of it and know how much it weighs. The price will be an interesting factor as well.
Has anyone ever thought if such an idea would be useful on a ppc? To have the capability to vew two different documents or anything for that matter with the screen split in half. The screen would not be this way all of the time, only when you need it to.

Interesting. Kind of like two little "windows". Hey, that's a good name for such a feature. You could call it WINDOWS. Uh, wait a minute. I think I've heard of someone else that came up with a feature like that.

:wink: hehe just kidding.

Roported today on http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?section_name=pub&aid=2852, the price could be coming in at under £100 which means it won't be competing directly with the £200 - £250 Sony PSP (unconfirmed price).

Looks like I'll be saving up for both then!

I think the DS could be great for thing like RPG's (which are very strong on the GBA) and strategy / puzzle games. Konami and Namco have confirmed they will be developing for the new platform which is good news.

Nintendo don't need another Virtual Boy! :D

Sega as well, had an interview with Yuji Naka as well(the Sonic the hedgehog guy, that interview will be published in German Magazine Man!ac) during my last trip to Japan.
He wants to make stuff for it, as does Makoto Osaki the head producer of AM2, another Sega team.

In case you people care, my interview with Sega AM2 goes up tommorow on US site gamespy( http://www.gamespy.com )

Thanks for the heads-up Fishie, I'll look out for the interview, sounds interesting.

Back to the Sony PSP, looks like we might not see that until 2006;
