View Full Version : Will we ever see file sharing software on PPC?

It struck me this morning as I was sitting in a local McCafe downloading my emails and checking in on PocketPC Thoughts with my Jornada that the one thing that is not available for the connected PPC is file sharing. We have email, internet, chatting, ftp etc etc - why not file sharing?
Any thoughts?

Bingo! Excellent idea. Can't be too hard to have your bluetooth connection scout for local devices and connect with Pocket Kazaa (if only that existed :))

Do you mean like file sharing like user to user across an internet connection, or like network file sharing?
I think you can use Resco File Explorer to browse another devices drives and such across a network, so if you had a wireless network connection device-to-device, you could probably browse it.

Well, I have *heard* if you turn off Sharing you cant be caught because downloading music isnt illegal - the making it available to others (ie. Uploading) is illegal.

I think that even if it is legal (to download) that stup*d RIAA will come after you cause there starting to get as greedy as those people who make the RE Tart law descisions at M$.
There was Opennap CE. But it's taken down. You can try deep search the net for keyword 'zamar'. there might be some remnant of it somewhere.
I suppose we just have to wait for somebody to port the gnutella or opennap to PPC again.

What would people use filesharing legally for? e.g. Swap document/news files? Just wondering as my experience with file sharing is that my friends use it to download programs/music which all have legal implications involved. Although it mite be interesting to be able to connect to say an office LAN (which isn't really filesharing - more networking)
It would be interesting to see, but given the limited storage space and download speeds on a pda i don't see it taking off. The current alternative is there are various yahoogroups (or other websites) that currently upload files for people to share.

I don't think we need to worry about the amount of storage space on a PPC, there are plenty of products out there giving you access to external hard drives. With the right accessories, a PPC can be just as utilized as a desktop or laptop.
I think the question is, "Why aren't developers treating the pocket pc as a target platform for P2P?"
Think about it for a second. Where are the trends leading? With the increased availability of hotspots, higher bandwidth across the cellular networks, and the mobility of the workforce, how long do you think it will take? Just keep posting the ideas, they will hear them. :D
