In fact, I'm wearing one of them right now, mostly because it has more pockets than one person could ever need. Scott Jordan, the garment's developer and CEO of <a href="http://www.scottevest.com/index.shtml">SCOTTeVEST LLC</a>, has just announced a special new feature he's adding to some of his vests: solar power charging cells.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/adrian/solarevest2.jpg" /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/adrian/solarevest.jpg" /><br /><br />"ICP Solar Technologies Inc. (ICP), the world's largest developer of solar products for consumers, and SCOTTeVEST LLC (SeV), the leading Technology Enabled Clothing® (TEC) company, will unveil the first solar power jacket prototypes designed to allow wearers to carry, connect and charge their portable digital devices, at the 2004 International CES, January 8-11, Las Vegas.<br /><br />"The ICP Global Solar division is integrating ICP’s flexible thin-film photovoltaic technologies (CIGS) in three models of SCOTTeVEST® jackets. These jackets will allow wearers to carry, connect and charge their portable digital devices in one convenient and fully integrated package. Strategically mounted CIGS panels are pre-wired, providing solar power to individual devices for power storage (charging) or immediate consumption." <br /><br />SCOTTeVESTs have always incorporated special pockets, flaps and tunnels that allow users to carry electronic devices and easily hide all of the cables, cords and hands-free wires they use. By adding solar panels and an integrated power cell, wearers can now keep their devices charged as well. Pricing information isn't yet available, but if you know me, you know that I absolutely HAVE to get my hands on one of these!<br /><br />What will Scott think of next?

Sounds like a great idea, but try and wear that one on your next flight.

Can you say strip search?

Nah. The TSA usually makes you take the jacket off and put it through the xray -- shouldn't raise flags.

I'm wondering about the weight... with all that gear, it pulls the jacket against the shoulders anyway, I wonder how much heavier this might be, and is it worth it for what little I could charge...?

Well, this may be cause to finally upgrade from my v2.0 jacket. :)

Don't be silly; Scott also sells a baseball cap (with a pocket) that I'm also wearing...

Finally a reason to go outdoors in the summer and to stay there a while! 8)

How long is it before the specs for the battery comes out? Is it perhaps a 12V battery?

Luckily, I live so far up north that I have 24h sunlight to my disposal around the 25th to 27th of June. Assuming I've got one solar powered jacket by then, I'll have lots of time to recharge my eVEST for winter!

there isn't any sunlight during the season(s) I wear my eVest. Now, if Scott ever makes a PWN (personal windmill network) eVest....

Well DON'T come to my city wearing that, :) Or you could be in for a delay. LOL from earlier this week see http://www.channelcincinnati.com/news/2744714/detail.html

"... According to reports, a woman was removed from the flight before it took off from Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport because she had a coat with wires protruding from it.

The coat turned out to be a motorcycle jacket that works like an electric blanket, and the woman was booked onto a later flight, WLWT reported.

Officials were notified after the woman was removed "out of an abundance of caution," a U.S. official said. The officials said several flights have been escorted in recent months as a precaution.

The plane was held in an area away from the terminal when it landed, and passengers are being re-screened at this hour as a precaution, WLWT reported. "

I wonder what the milliamp rating of these solar cells will be? Perhaps 100ma at 6 volts?

I wander if the XRAY's from a airport XRAY machine will hurt the solar cell's ?

That aside, who would where one of these ? I would be constantly embarrassed if I walked out in public in one of these. I guess this comes from being an electrical engineer. With all the flack we get about colored pens, calculators, and pocket protectors, I would never wear something like a SCOTTeVEST in public

Anyways, to each his own...

People tend to ridicule that which they do not understand. Be proud of what you are, don't be ashamed. :) I'm a techno-geek and everyone at work gives me a hard time about all my gadgets. When I wore my eVest for the first time, no one even noticed until I showed them what it did. Then I got the laughs again. :)

But I love it -- they just don't get it. Hey, some of 'em like opera, and that just blows me away. Besides, they know I can just hit a pressure point or two on 'em if they get too carried away. ;)

Won't it be the same feeling with a SCOTTeVEST?
Actually, no. With the eVESTs I have, the pockets are cut so that you can really carry a lot of gear without looking like a stuffed teddy bear. For example, I went out to dinner last night and had my wallet, a Pocket PC, digital camera and Blackberry in the vest, and you couldn't even tell they were there.

 Well, typical temperatures around here is around 20 degrees Celsius -- not counting last summer when we had around 30 degrees from July to sometime August.
And that's below (read:south of) the Artic Cicle... :D

That bag idea would also be cool, if it's in the form of a backpack...

I wander if the XRAY's from a airport XRAY machine will hurt the solar cell's ?

I don't know what the solar cells on the eVEST will be made of, but assuming that they are made of the same material as "normal" solar cells -- no. In fact, the number of materials/substances that are suspectable to be damaged by airport X-rays are very few.

Otherwise, consider getting a solarpower-free SCOTTeVEST.

That aside, who would where one of these ? I would be constantly embarrassed if I walked out in public in one of these. I guess this comes from being an electrical engineer. With all the flack we get about colored pens, calculators, and pocket protectors, I would never wear something like a SCOTTeVEST in public

Then apparently you haven't gotten properly introduced to one! ;)

The SCOTTeVEST has got proper discreet and organized pockets for all of your colored pens and calculators, but I'm not that sure you'll need a pocket protector in it...
My Pocket PC, cellphone, Texas Instruments TI-85, wallet, sunglasses, bottle of soda, and Gerber Multi-Plier all fit nicely in the SCOTTeVEST and without any visible signs of them being there.

I'm sure that you can include all your "important" gadgets you might need in a SCOTTeVest without getting embarrassed in public! :)

What is the strength of the panel. Like will it hold up to regular winter wear?

Naturally, the next eVest will allow us to power our devices with our excess body heat. 8)

Hi: certainly looks interesting...

How warm are these? Are they usable in summer weather?

Thanks,

I have a friend that has ordered one and I'll give that a try when it comes in. He's a gadget freak and always has something hanging from a belt or jacket etc. I tried a fisherman’s vest a couple of years ago with no luck since I could never remember in which pocket I put the small things. It would seem that I would need some kind of indexing system to work with an evest. But I'm definitely going to give it another try.

These things are very talked-about! It's cool to think we 'heard of him first'

http://web.archive.org/web/20010623091830/www.pocketpcthoughts.com/archives/00000908.html

It's brilliant of him to move to power... I mean, with all the wireless technologies, his wire-running jackets will now be perfect for running power instead of data cables. Great thinking, Scott.

Yeah, I heard that also from a finland friend of mine back in graduate school. That is constantly keeping me amazed, even until now. 24 hours of sun for the whole 3 days. How do you sleep ? =) I cannot even sleep with a light on.

I guess I have to put finland on my travel itenary very soon, preferably on the dates you mentioned above =)

Remember: take plenty of No-doze during the entire three day period and, no, you are not allowed to hide under an eVest to escape the sun. ;)

Wow, I guess you will be the first to test them as you have done so far with every other ScottEvest.

Interesting idea, ill never buy one though, they arent at all stylish IMHO, something for my grandad maybe...
