This new device, we will call "The Rock" for now (the true code name will be held in confidence until the FCC news breaks soon). "The Rock" as far as I know has not been FCC certified, so I will continue to look it up on a weekly basis. Here is some of the scoop on "The Rock": It will be manufactured by HP and labeled under the iPAQ brand. It WILL include an integrated QWERTY keyboard, a modular GPRS/EDGE and possibly a new technology as of yet not released..."<br /><br />Go check out the rest of the story over at MPx200.org!

I've been waiting for a new Smartphone from AT&T but was hoping for an integrated camera. :( .
I didn't see one on this phone.
Anyone have more detailed specs?

Could this possibly be the new iPaq H6000 series we've been waiting for???

This sounds like an awesome device... 8O A GSM/GPRS iPaq has been rumored to be in the works for a while now. Integrated camera would be nice... not too big a deal for me though. I hope it is true, and I hope T-Mobile picks up on it too!

Mmmmm, unlimited data for $19.99 on a GPRS iPaq. [droooooooool]

But the real question is... do I buy this when it comes out or wait for the OQO?

Yes, but unfortunately AT&T's GSM coverage is really spotty outside of a few markets. As a matter of fact, AT&T advised me not to go with their coverage since I travel to a lot of non-metropolitan areas. It will be a couple of years before they finish building their network.

But they did say another carrier was interested as well. Hopefully that other carrier is T-Mobile!

If this is at all true, that is....... :?

Sorry, don't want it. Integrated keyboard means the unit will be BIG - like the 4350. If they can put it into a 19xx form factor, then they have a real winner. I won't accept anything bigger than a 4150. Not even a 2215.

Sounds like it.

Too many devices, not enough money.

Am I the only person who thinks that the 5000 design is really nice and the perfect size?!!

I would think it would be very practical in that size personally, and would definitely concider buying it if it was in the design (legacy options)

Nope, I think this too :) I've been waiting for HP to go public with their 6000 series before I make my decision on what PDA to buy next (will most likely still be an iPaq). I love the 5550, but would absolutely love if my iPaq could make cell calls too.

With the keyboard thing, hopefully HP will make some models with it and some without. I really don't want that either for a phone.

Obviously, HP was planning on making the 5000 series a GSM/GPRS phone from the start. A space for a SIM slot in back, an antenna, the speaker at the top, mic and the bottom - fits to your head perfectly, the bluetooth headset profile in the software already and even a "vibrate" mode. The only thing missing was the GSM chip. Had they released this as a GSM phone, I wonder if the WiFi would have also been included as well, making this a three-trick wireless pony or was the WiFi only added when it was decided not to add GSM.

But I figure they dropped plans for it because of all the people who freak out and think that if their PDA is any bigger than a coat button, its just to HUGE for them to use ;) Personally, a small cell phone, while easier to carry, is too uncomfortable to actually use. I thought the iPaq 5555 would have been a perfect size between PDA and phone.

Me 3!

I love the size and the concept of jackets, and since i already have a considerable collection of different ones, I would hate to see them discontinue that form factor. 8O

Amazing! I know one job I never want- designing consumer electronics. I swear HP could announce that the unit excretes gold for free and someone would complain about how they want platinum.

Good job HP/AT&T. I for one think it's directionally correct and should shore up a little of that Treo 600 envy that's been getting tossed around by some (BTW, I got to play with that little thing the other day and was amazed at what a good job Palm/Handspring did with it. I'll still take my 4350 and T610 for now.). Hope TM picks up this new unit.

LOL or some will complain they're allergic and want silver.

I played with a buddy's Treo 600 and was pretty pleased with it. The keyboard was nice, excellent screen contrast... as for me too, though, no way I'll ditch my i700... I couldn't live with 160x160 on the screen (and he said he has a hard time getting many PalmOS apps to run on it, but that could just be user issues).

The problem with size is many people seem to want the Looney Tunes "tent-in-the-desert" version of electronics. You know: small on the outside, but you go in and it's like the Taj Mahal in there? I'm skilled at compromise, so I realize that if I want a nifty display, in the non-cartoon world I'll need a bigger device. With my eyes, I'd be better off. :)

At the same time, size is a concern, so I don't want something like the G1000. But a removable thumb-keyboard might help (or that laser-based deal from iBiz), so I weigh that in too.

The i700 is the nicest for me and my budget. I can't/won't pay $1000 for the XDA 2 and crummy GSM coverage, so this is what I get until a "better compromise" comes along. :)

I really enjoyed the size of the 1900 series for a while. It was teeny and very function packed! I missed the form factor of the 3000 series! If both devices were of the same function I would choose the latter of the two aforementioned devices....

That was really well put :)

Exceptionally nice find :D :D Learning to keep a throttle on my eagerness for future devices has been beneficial. In no means, do I entend to express that I do not want to hear about it 8O pushing the envelope into the future is very 8) to see! :D :ninja:

i didnt see anything about GSM there - (maybe im old :-) ) But is this just supposed to be a connected device VIA GPRS/EDGE? I suppose that could be of some use, I think it would be a big ass phone if its similarly shaped as the other iPaqs.... I liek this intgrated KB thing - cant go back to T9 or anything else since my CSK :-D
