Sony To Use OLED Screen In New PDA

It'll be interesting to see if such an OLED-based PDA hits the market outside of Japan, and it remains to see how well it fares in outdoor viewing or longevity (both of which as issues with some OLED screens)... but this may very well be a major step forward for a technology that's had a long time-to-market.

Okay, it's been a while since I did any reading/research on OLED, and I've forgotten anything I once knew...

What are the advantages of Organic LED vs. Normal? Its it cheaper or easier to produce?

Aren't the main advantages that is is very high contrast (doesn't need a backlight) and uses less power? I'm really interested to see how it performs compared to a regular TFT screen.

OLED technology provides a gppd platform for displaying high resolution
media in a portable format. Compared to traditional displays, it does not require backlighting or polarizers. This translates into relatively reduced power consumption, device cost, and thickness. Higher contrast ratios and wider viewing angles make it easier to read, and faster response times make it well suited for displaying video content. Flexible OLED device packages can be less than 1 mm thick, as well as potentially very inexpensive to manufacture.

Nope, OLED uses far less power then traditional screens so it should improve battery life.

This is a step in the right direction! OLED has got some issues with some colors fading over time, but considering how long you wind up keeping a PDA and using it, say over your monitor or TV scree, OLED is the way to on a PDA!
