View Full Version : Freakishly Slow Home Page Load Times

You will all have probably noticed how slow our home page is to load right now - the logo and top banner load, then everything grinds to a halt while you stare at a whole lot of blank blue. 8O We're not entirely sure what's causing it - it's not a server load, because my last load had the page itself being generated in 0.3 seconds. Rather, it's one of our remote data sources - something is holding everything back. Sometimes it's Tribal Fusion, but that doesn't appear to be the case this time. Regardless, something is making everything very slow. I hate it when that happens! Thanks for your patience while we work on fixing it, and while I work on getting over the last of my flu. Bleh.

Really? Both Janak and Ed confirmed that it was slow for them...but if it's fast for you, then it must be a third party DNS issue that's affecting some ISP's but not all. <groan> I hate DNS issues... :(

No problems here, either. I've loaded the front page on a couple systems (even remotely on one in another city with a different ISP) and had no problems. I've been reading the forums for the past twenty minutes or so and have had no slowness.

Do you have scripts from Mobileplanet (can't remember)? They're holding Geekzone right now.

No slowdowns with the mobile version at least! Same moderately slow loads as always, about 30 seconds for the front page over dialup. Of course, in the threads the button images are still only placeholders with ALT text, as they have been for almost a year here, but that's not such a big deal. I just open the Printable Version link in a new window if a thread looks long and worth reading. Those versions load lightening fast, and lack only the Reply button to make them very satisfactory (hence keeping the original thread open in another window, in case I'm feeling pesky and have something to say).
So, any chance of figuring out why, after many scratch-rebuilds and bug hunts, I'm still seeing no buttons in the threads? I see the smileys, which makes this different from Brighthand, where I don't see smileys but do see most buttons nowadays? Used to see the ALT text for buttons within the thread tables there too, but now those are fixed somehow. I just did the EUU4 in hopes that the 'relative image links more than 30 characters long' fix was the culprit, but there's no change since then. Must be something in the way that PIE in PPC 2002 is reading your PHP or whatever.

It was slow for me earlier, maybe 3 hrs ago. Thought it was at my end. Seems to be back to normal now.

....still very slow. Is this problem related to the one that is making it impossible for me to load the mobileplanet webpage?

Just removed the MobilePlanet script from our homepage on Geekzone and it's fast as before. I think it's MobilePlanet...

It is anything but slow. Quite fast load.

There's some bottleneck in North America (or somewhere else).
The time to load PocketPCThoughts.com in Internet Explorer and Opera was both 5.xx seconds (where x is a positive integer). And that was using a 256 DSL connection in Finland, Northern Europe.
However, when I used www.webpageanalyzer.com to inspect the same URL it reported strange download times (FYI: I cut out the unimportant parts):
Report run on Mon Jan 5 06:00:33 EST 2004
...
Connection Rate = Download Time
T1 14.4 Mbps = 13.42 seconds
8O What's going on here? :|

I think you are right! Pocket PC Passion is/was experiencing the same problem.

Back to normal here. So, was it a fix you applied or did the DNS gods smile on you? :?

With a subject line that included the word 'freakishly,' I'd have to guess you're a Kids in the Hall fan, right Jason?
If I have to explain, then I'm obviously off base. Still, it's funny to me.

This is a new problem? I've experienced the problem as you described it with your site for the last several months, at least. It happens erratically but fairly regularly.

Really? I am on the site more than most and this was the first time I've seen it.

Hmm. I don't experience slowdowns more than about 1 day every month or two, and that's mostly due to Tribal Fusion.
My guess is that MobilePlanet had issues, but their techs were asleep. The site is indeed fast & happy now. ;)

Really? I am on the site more than most and this was the first time I've seen it.Well, if it's the same thing I think you guys are describing. Basically, I come to the site and I'll see the header with the site logo and the general framing of the site, but the real content (news articles) are missing. Sometimes I'll wait and wait and it will eventually appear. Sometimes I'll get impatient and try to do a refresh, which usually results in the page loading completely quicker. I'm pretty sure that when this happens, the status bar in IE behaves as if the page load was complete.
BTW, I haven't noticed this problem recently, but I've been extra busy lately and haven't stopped by as often as I used to.

At least with Mozilla, the only thing that wasn't loading last night was the right hand sidebar... The "content" of articles, etc. loaded immediately. But that could be a Mozilla/IE difference in the rendering.
