View Full Version : Wireless Email Takes Forever

I just got my PPC up and running with my wireless network, but whenever I do a wireless "Send & Receive" it takes forever to contact the server and check for new messages. I thought it might be the actual mail servers over at Comcast, but after turning on my pc I was able to check for new messages very quickly. Whats odd is everything else works very fast wirelessly. I can surf the web, wirelessly sync, and browse my shared network drives all relatively quickly. Why would checking email take so long? I have the POP3 servers, user names, and passwords set up exactly the same as my home computer except I left the "Domain" field blank. Any ideas? :?:

Have you tried in another wireless environment? It might be your wireless router that's on the slow side - do you have a wireless laptop you can check it against? I've noticed that sometimes checking email seems really slow, then five minutes later it will be fast...I've never figured out what the root cause of this is.

I've seen the same. I have four POP accounts I check on a regular basis. Usually, when I check them it stalls on "Connecting" for 30 seconds (I know the time because it's the timeout for my backlight). Then it sends and receives normally (quickly). Every once in a while though, it zips through the stages very quickly. No 30 second stall. Strange...

My PPC gets my e mail via my WiFi just as fast as my wired desktop....I would think that there may be a configuration issue there but it is very strange that the problem is not always present....It seems to be hanging on the authentication of you to the mail server...

Ditto on my 5555.

I don't think it's the authentication. It stalls while "Connecting" for 30 seconds. After that comes "Logging in" and then "Sending and Receiving," both of which are very fast.

For what it's worth - my experiences with retrieving email via wifi have been exactly the same. Slow to connect (30 secs) then quick from there on.
One interesting point to add - I have 4 email accounts setup on my 1935. When I check the 1st account, I get the slow connection behavior mentioned above - however, when I check the 2nd, 3rd & 4th accounts, everything goes as fast as lightning from start to finish.
It's almost like the server recognizes me after the 1st time and lets thing happen more quickly!?

I've seen this as well, but not always. I'd say I get the scenario you describe about 40% of the time. Then about 10% of the time all accounts are fast. The other 50% of the time, all accounts have the 30-second lag.

Are you experiances this same 30 second lag when you load a web page with PIE?

Speaking only for myself, PIE runs fine.

Same here. PIE seems to load pages just fine. I'm using an iPAQ 2215.

Not me - PIE works great with no 30 second lag whatsoever.

And I have no issues in either case. :ninja:

And I thought it was only mine that did that. It is really strange how that happens-does anyone know what causes it?

Pardon my cynicism, but this just further convinces me that Pocket Inbox should be thrown out the nearest window - between this and the IMAP issue I raised last month, it makes me wonder if anyone at Microsoft bothers to use the products they make. Excuse my bitterness.

Like I said, everything else that uses wifi is very quick with no lag time. When checking my email it displays "Connecting" then quickly moves on to "Logging on..." and this is where the lag hits for about 30 secs as others described. Switching to another account makes no difference, it takes just as long. Maybe this is a software issue?

Interesting. I'm the reverse. Connecting takes the time and Logging in is very fast. Perhaps these are two separate issues.

I wish I got as far as having the long lag time!
Can anyone tell me what their settings are for their comcast accounts on their PPC? I have a 2215, and the following settings:
Incoming: mail.comcast.net
Outgoing: smtp.comcast.net
domain: comast.net
I checked the "Outgoing servier requires...." box.
Have read a few other threads on this, and that is all I could glean from them, but I'm still having trouble. Getting error messages for both receiving and sending. I did manage to get the generic comcast welcome email when I first logged in with my iPAQ, but also got the outgoing email sending error, then started reading threads.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm traveling next week and would like some email...hotel has WiFi....and I've seen conflicting info regarding using Comcast email account while traveling.
Thanks!

Everything looks correct. I'd leave the domain field blank and uncheck the "outgoing server requires..." box though. I don't know how the email software differs between my 4155 and your 2215, but im able to log in fine, it just takes forever.

A while ago, nPOPw was recomended to me. It's not the most intuitive mail program, but I did a test and there was about a 45 second download time difference between nPOPw and Inbox. So... I'm sticking with it.
