View Full Version : How many icons on your desktop?

Do you need to max out the resolution on your monitor just to fit another icon on your desktop? Or are you one of those XP freaks who can only have the Recycle Bin?

Now that I have my own PC () I've been pretty messy - 39!

Remember, we're just counting desktop icons, not System Tray or Quick Launch icons. And no Mary jokes!

I only have six icons, and I am thinking that is too many. I do not even have the Office Shortcut bar in the upper right. It is only so I can see my 19-month old son on my desktop. Take a look...

:way to go: A beautiful son, Dave!

Is that a miniature pumpkin on the ground? A pet toy?

I consider myself a purist - I only have eight icons:

I like a clean look.

I have probably around 20, but I prefer to keep it under 10. Instead I add shortcuts in a very organized fashion in the Start Menu (not in Start > Programs).

Thanks Dave. That's his big cheese grin. Oh, that is one of his toys. :D

Luckily I have a 19" lcd so I have plenty of space. But 75 icons (not counting the ones I put into folders after I went over 90!) takes a little longer to load, even at 3g and even after I put some in folders. And it helps if you change the icon spacing parameters to fit more in. Of course, I have a few more in the Tray and the Launcher.

I have a 17" LCD and only one icon usually. :)

The only time I put something on my desktop is when I want to do something with it (i.e. test out a new app or util). Otherwise, the DT is clean.

I have a 17" flat Dell CRT ... 19 icons counting Recycle bin. I'm thinking about putting stuff into folders though ... I have an organization that would work with folders.

19"? There's larger than that too, you know. I'm sitting on a 1600x1200 20" LCD right now. I can't ever go back. :razzing:

I'm a weird case. I have zero. That's because I "hid" all of all the desktop icons, and set up a Desktop toolbar (you know, if you right-click on the Taskbar and go to Toolbars => Desktop), and then hide the desktop icons. I then dock the toolbar on the left side of the screen, and make it auto-hide and always-on-top.

Result: a nice clean desktop, and potential access to my desktop icons no matter what I have on my screen. Unfortunately, this means my desktop "folder" has a lot of files as they're not bothering me... ;)

You have no option for 75+. :( Guess I'll just check the 50+.

Ya, I'm messy. You should see my physical desktop. :p

I have 41 right now, but I prefer to have under 10. I guess Its time to start moving things from desktop to the "Junk" folder under My Documents.

P.S. To anyone who needs a good backup solution: i've started keeping all my important stuff under the "My Documents' folder no matter what it is. The result? Very easy backup strategy - just 1 folder to backup, no hopping around the drive. - Just my suggestion.

Desktop icons? I don't need no stinkin' icons! 0X

I'm running Geoshell (http://www.geoshell.com/) right now, so I don't have any! I'll post a screenshot as soon as I can.

I only have a 15" screen (notebook PC), but it's a 1600x1200 panel. :D Meaning, that I have the ability to fit an inordinate amount of icons onto my desktop. And I took advantage of it. About this time a month and a half ago, I had over 200 icons on my desktop! Yup, 200. I basically just kept any file that I downloaded, or document I had written, for the past several months. I was actually pretty efficient, since everything I needed was in one place, and I basically knew where everything was. I also kept auto-arrange on, so everything was in neat columns, and because of my resolution, they only took up like 2/5 of my screen.

Anyway, a little over a month ago, I decided to clean up, and brought it to a svelte 15 or so icons. Then I reinstalled Windows, and right now have only 14. :)

Okay, here it is:

The orange thing in the center of the blue blob is my cursor.
The wallpaper is from http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/ (http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/wallpapers.html). It's called Glacial Inferno.

I usually have eight, but I also use the desktop as a staging ground for test stuff, creating quick links to webpages I want to keep references to but not have as a Favorite (eg, a shortcut to the webpage for a product I want to buy in the near future; once I have it I trash the shortcut), temporary stuff and downloads.

Just the recycle for me. I think of the desktop icons as a way to open something quickly. I used to have twenty plus but found it took longer to search the desktop for the one I wanted than just going to the start/all programs list. :? Now, I just use it for short term storage. Like if I have a document or something I am working on and want it really easy to find. When I won't be using it as much, just move it to some other location. Works for me :D .

Tom: How are you creating the various bars on the screen? I'm assuming it's the same reason you have no taskbar, recycle bin, etc.

It's with GeoShell (http://www.geoshell.com/). It hasn't crashed yet, and I've been using it for about two weeks. Each bar is filled with plugins that provide things like shortcuts, Winamp controls, task switching, volume control, weather reports and system information.

If you want to try it, I'd recommend downloading GeoBuddy (http://www.geoshell.com/plugins/zoom.asp?id=286) too, so you don't have to venture into the registry to edit settings.

Ok, DrtyBlvd, I have to ask - what the heck kind of monitor is that? Apple Cinema Display?

Dual 18" Sony LCDs :D - I presumed I was the last to know the screen grab did both at once!
