View Full Version : Which 'Charge and Sync' cable for the 4100 series?

Today I opened a 4100 that Santa left under the tree - WooHoo... Nice machine... A little yellow at angles, but nice as I would normally hold it... Much brighter than my previous HP.

I will be retiring a Jornada 568 – loved the flip cover and the cradle was a lot better – I feel I’m roughing up this 4100 to dock it or to use the charge adapter.

Picked up a 512 MB CF for $139 at eCost, now I’m looking for a charge and sync cable for the office…

Any suggestions? What all other model iPAQs should be interchangeable???

TIA

Nice present!

Good news, bad news.

The good news is that any cables for the 19XX will fit the 41XX series.

The bad news is that the CF (compact flash) cards will not work with the single card 41XX. It calls for SD (Secure Digital) cards only. The 22XX is a dual card model, the 41XX is not.

Bob,

Congratulations on a G-R-E-A-T machine. I also got one for Xmas. I just received the sync/charge cable from Moonlight Technologies. It was only $15 but the problem is it does not seem to work.

It charges the unit but does not make the connection to sync. I have an email into their customer support and their response was unclear (I'm being generous in my description). I will contact them again and ask for clarification but my initial reaction is to not be impressed. It's a cable, how complex can getting it to work be?????

Good luck on whatever you decide to go with.

BTW - I hope you have a typo in your initial post. The CF card won't work in the 4100. It's SD only.

Got to be a typo. CF 512 are about $104 at ecost, SD 512 are about $139 for the Kingston. Hope so, anyway! 0X

Oops - calling it a typo is being generous... A senior moment - I meant SD not CF! ...

Like to hear more re: the charge and sync cable... is the connector common with the 22XX. 39XX, 5XXX or what? I know I read the 19XX has a different pin-out and therefore won't work...

TIA

The 19xx is actually the same connector as the 2xxx, 3xxx and 5xxx models -- the USB and charge pins are the same -- the difference is that it doesn't have the serial pins active, and they therefore reversed the connector -- otherwise people would have tried their Stowaways and other accessories, which require the serial pins' functionality.

I haven't handled a 4xxx unit, but I'm pretty sure it's the exact same as the 2xxx, 3xxx, and 5xxx (it has serial support, right?)

I'm using the same sync and charge cable for my 2215 and 4150. It's one of the ZipLinq ones you find several places. Think I got mine at www.cyberguys.com. They have some pretty interesting stuff at decent prices. No affiliation, just have been buying stuff from them for a while and have had good experiences.

Well I received the cable from Cyberguys (p/n 131 2145) which is shown to be for the iPAQ 3600...

Bad news is - IT DOES NOT FIT!

I see they have one for the 3800 (p/n 131 2147) but I am hesitant to try to exchange…

Does anyone have specific Part Numbers?? What I have for the 3600 does not work, although the thread above indicates they are all the same!

I believe that only the 38xx and 39xx series have the same connector as the 22xx, 41xx and 5xxx. Anything you buy for any of those models will work with your 4150.

but will a 38XX sync/charge cable work with a 1945?

It will probably charge, but it won't sync, due to the switched serial pins.

dang, there was an open box one at the local best buy for cheap. oh well...i guess i'm paying the full price.

OK - received the Cable (p/n 131 2147) from cyberguys, the one listed as for the iPAQ 3800...

Works like a charm

I can confirm that that's correct.

I've tried one of the boxwave sync n charge cables (actually two of them) that work fine on a 2210 and 5550, but not on my 4150.

A bit mad about this, where did you get yours from? Has anyone else sprung for the extended battery?

We now have the Sync and Charge Cables as well as the USB Car Adapters (cigarette lighter adapters) available at PocketPCMall.com (http://www.pocketpcmall.com/default.php?manufacturers_id=18).

Glad that Bob found a solution... :way to go:

Here's an odd wrinkle I came across, curious if anyone else with a 4xxx series has experienced this :?:

With WiFi turned on, and connected to a WiFi Router, my sync/charge cable does NOT charge the iPaq 8O

When looking at the battery status while in this state, the battery cycles between "charging" and "not charging", with the net result being zero new charge, and standard battery drain.

If I turn off WiFi or end the connection to the Router, the iPaq starts to charge as expected.

Gotta love these "unique" traits of our treasured PPCs. It's almost like the "unique" traits of a few vehicles I own from the great country of Italy!

Yup, the 41xx and the 43xx series are power hogs. With Wifi on they draw so much power that the +5V 100 mA that a USB cable provides is not enough to trigger the charger. Drop your interal battery charge below 60% and you'll never be able to trigger it.

The lessons:

1) Don't throw out or lose your original power adaptor and power connector! As much as I hate that power connector design (it is easily damaged, and on one occasion set an IPAQ of mine on fire), it does provide enough current to properly charge the IPAQ.

2) Don't rely on a sync/charge cable when on the road if you plan to use the IPAQ heavily. Use it to 'top off' your battery charge, and don't let the internal battery drop below 60% -- EVER.

3) Invest in a spare interal battery if you do plan to use your IPAQ heavily, from a source that will tell you the date of manufacture. There is a reason why HP gave you a slot to charge another battery on the cradle.
