So, what did Santa bring you this year? Doesn't matter if it is Pocket PC related or not.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2003/20031225-santa.gif" />

This rolled into my inbox during the split-second between when I checked my email on Popcorn and when I checked it in Outlook (I'm currently running Antivirus-less), so I'll be the second to answer...
A slim keyboard for my 5550, Slurpee coupons ( :rock on dude!: ), PJs, a Simpsons trivia game that has absurdly stupid rules so I'll just do like what the fair belle Kati does with Trivial Pursuit cards from now on, LOTR:TTT special edition DVD and cash.
Edit: and a watchband from Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (www.kickinghorseresort.com) that I've been wearing all day and forgot about.
DVD's, books, and most PPC related...a Socket Bluetooth GPS. 8) I love it! I bought Mapopolis to use with this and I'm still trying to figure out some of its quirks.

NOTHING - which is what my wife and I agreed upon.
Well, I lie. We got good food, time with her father. That was important, since she I and both lost grandparents this year.
OTOH, my birthday is Christmas Eve, and she gave me a watch. :)
Now, need Jason to throw a NYD giveaway. I am PocketPC-less right now. Sure would live to win one. :)

Got nothing. My wife and I have purchased a new home, so we decided not to exchange. The new house is a nice gift.
We draw names for the family gifts, so it's easier than having to buy for everyone. I got a screwdriver set, and a couple of wine plaques. 8)

Oh yeah, Kelly Ford of KnowBetter.com got me a $50 gift certificate to Fictionwise, so I won't run out of ebooks while I'm on the road! :)

You lucky, lucky US bastards :D I wish we had electronics that cheap, so I could get a nice new phone or portable DVD player for christmas *pouts*
Santa got me a $50 gift certificate and a Cross Ion refill.
Have any of you tried the Cross Ion? I think it's just the kind of pen for us geeks. If Star Trek had pens in it, this'd be the one. I own two myself, and I got my sister one a while ago. They're not cheap, but when you use one - you definitely know where that money went! So if any of you do happen to get a gift certificate.. might look at one of these cool pens ;-)

that is a cool gift and it also makes it easier on yourself when you carry around that key board. having two good models is great with in itself :)
tourdewolf.....eh,
so what is up with the rocks dude? what are you going to use them for? I am thinking the obvious such as a paper weight, but I am just wondering if they have another purpose that I have not thought of off hand.
I was given some cash and of course a holiday card. that is it. nothing to it.

We got a very nice gift from the in-laws, a Casio Exilim 4 MP digital camera. It's our first "real" digital camera, so we'll have a lot of fun with it. Now, to go hunting for a bargain for a 128 or 256 MG SD card. The camera comes with 10 MG built in which doesn't last very long! :D

I got an iPAQ 4100 series. I haven't opened the package yet. Shall I return it and wait for a 6000 series this next year? Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm! Help me. a few bottles of brotherhood wine, and an ati 9800pro 8)
Spent most of last night swapping my systems so the new one i built is my game machine, and my old one handles anything else like downloading my anime, and it can also play games with my old geforce3 , but it only has 256 megs. I also nearly ended up throwing a hd out the window when I thought I had killed it (had tons of recent anime not burned) when it wouldn't recognize in the new computer, and it didn't even recognize in the old computer until I put it back in the exact position on the chain (second channel, slave. during the move, the computer was partially gutted, so I tested it on the original computer as master, alone. when it didn't recognize there I thought for sure it had died). Would have been the 2nd large hd I killed just by a simple move.

But we did have a nice dinner at 1st christmas day at my parents home, and spent some quality time together which is always nice... :)

I gotta say I like my jabra wired earpiece so much, it's the kind with the molded thingie that goes in your ear... really comfortable for me. The wife can't stand it though. I got a sweet DVD burner, LOTR: TTT extended DVD, ethernet to wireless bridge (to make my series 1 Tivo wireless), a sushi/sashimi kit, and lots of little things.

Well since I'm now the head of my own clan, so to speak, I got to do all sorts of fun Xmas stuff like buying a tree and carrying it a klick back home in sub-zero temperatures, buying all the presents and wrapping the damn things, spending hours cooking and then tidying up and washing up, and all the rest.
What I actually got this Xmas though, was the complete joy of seeing a big fat all day smile on my three year old daughter's face. Which made all the work I put in above totally worth it. Even if she does think that Santa brought everything...
Can't complain actually - my good father in a fit of generosity bought me a 40 Gb iPod a month or so ago as an early present.
So all in all a good one.
carphead - the Vaja case (if you got the iVod) is plain awesome, but I personally think iTunes is fantastic - no need for Anapod Explorer. And I can't stress too much that you need to replace the iPod headphones...for buds get Sennheiser MX400/500's (about £15) but if you want really good sound go for the over the head (but they fold into a case for portability) Sennheiser PX100's (which are open, ie sound leaks from them) or the PX200's (closed, which means you avoid annoying people). I personally have the PX100's (about £30) which have a slight edge over the closed version.

I'm planning on using a good chunk of my cash (which should actually be cash as I'm Canadian ;)) on a set of decent headphones; I had the PX200s on my wishlist but didn't recieve them. What are the advantage(s) of the PX100s over the PX200s?

The PX100's are open, and the freedom of air movement through the earpads seem to give them a better overall sound and noticeably stronger bass (although we're talking degrees here...it's not that much better) - the disadvantage is that sound will leak from them, potentially annoying people around you (not an issue for me), and that environmental noises (traffic noise, someone shouting "look out, you with the ipod, a piano's about to fall on you" and so on) will leak in. If you have a European iPod with the restricted volume level, this could really wash out your music. The PX200's are slightly more expensive, but provide decent isolation for you and those around you. Depends on what you need.
Either set are a major upgrade - you will really, really notice the difference in quality, and actually might want to think about encoding your music at higher bitrates because encoding artifacts may become audible. I use 224 AAC at the moment which sounds great. But then I have 40 Gigs and room to burn... ;)
Hope this helps.

I'm away from home for this Christmas, but still spent it with relatives in the US. From them I got:
Altec Lansing iPod speakers (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T8355LL/A) (kicks ass!)
iSport waist pack (http://thinkdifferentstore.com/product_info.php?products_id=276) (exercise waist pack for iPod)
iTrip wireless FM transmitter (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T7194LL/A) (best wireless transmitter ever!)
256MB SD card
Polo Jeans hoodie
Wallet with a letter "J" on it (apparently initial purses and wallets are the latest fad)
Shell choker and bracelet from the Carribean
NaviPod IR Remote (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T6921ZM/A)for iPod (from myself)
I was very lucky, I was given a new Sprint t608 BT phone, a wireless keyboard and mouse, a ScottEVest 3.0 and an AIBO ERS 220A. ooooooooo

Who's Santa?
Hanukkah Harry got me the Pirates of the Carribean dvd, and some clothes, and a bunch of cash(needed to help buy a car to replace the one I just crashed :( ), and belly dancing lessons, and some kitchen toys.
Hanukkah Harry?? Wow, another reason I think us Christians should embrace our Jewish roots - I'd like having Santa & HH drop some presents off :)
I wonder if there is a Kwanzaa Kenny or something... if only I was black I could have a honed present-generating machine.
This year, I got time with my family, time away from my extended family, and the usual apparel gifts (Socks, underwear), and money. The money revived my very low savings account after my early present to myself: my I-Mate.

I feel like such a nerd when I look at my list.
I got:
a Namco Arcade Joystick game
a Dilbert Calendar
X-men II movie
a Globe
a Circuit City gift certificate
a Rebel G Camera (not quite the Digital Rebel I wanted)
a Super Bowl shirt (it's being held in Houston so the sister-in-law got me one)
an LSU afghan (Geaux Tigers!)
a Chick-fil-la Calendar (won in a Chinese gift swap)
Tonight, we took my mother-in-law to see Lord of the Rings III as her gift. So I guess I'm not the only nerd in the family...

Some art for my new office.
A hammer spray-painted gold from my husband as an award for my handy-woman service building desks and such at my new house. :) This is also a reference to middle school when I won the "golden hammer" award for shop/drafting.
A Le Creuset dutch oven, sauce pot, and casserole dish. Cast iron - very heavy! And blue. :)
A really cool wireless mouse, some necklaces, an LED flashlight that can also be converted to a little lantern, a neat keychain, a small stained-glass box with a cat on it, a couple of DVDs/CDs/books, a fleece sweatshirt, candy, socks, a solar-powered rotating prism (rainbow-projector)...
And my father is coming out to see us tomorrow, and bringing more presents.
But the best present is that my sick cat Daphne is getting better, and has even had a few snacks and drinks of water on her own. :D
Oh, and I gave my husband an Asus 620BT, 512MB CF card, and some T-shirts (Tron, Transformers, Thundercats, Star Trek, and Oscar the Grouch).

My wife gave me the best gift I could imagine: a healthy son! He was due today actually, but seems to have inherited my patience (or lack thereof) and arrived a little early on Dec. 8th.
I'm WAY behind on my forum reading (and pretty much everything else), but the last two weeks plus has been a blast so far. He's our first so everything is a new experience.

carphead - the Vaja case (if you got the iVod) is plain awesome, but I personally think iTunes is fantastic - no need for Anapod Explorer.
Didn't get the IVod I brought the cheaper one (The 665 in black). I really wanted one with a flip on it so I brought the cheaper one. I really only brought a vaja because I wanted to see if the manufacturing was as good as everybody says they are, without paying for a more expensive PDA case. My conclustion is that they're good but not great. 8O
As for headphones I'm not bothered as I use a Itrip (Ebay baby!) in the car (40% of my day) and in office I have a set of speakers (which I'm going replace with better ones soon).
Anapod rocks! Itunes locks the Ipod to one PC. I have about 4 that I use during my day and I use a external HDD with my MP3 collection on it.

Congratulations JR, life will never be the same from now on. :D
As for gifts, we had a pretty poor last quarter of 2003 so really only bought prezzies for our daughter. She had a whole lot of gifts, but the best was a new Toshiba e355 with a 256MB SD card. I was able to find a really good price on the e355 which helped a lot.
She's ten and had one of my old Palms for a couple of years so she's already tuned into using a PDA. She absolutely loves all the new things she can do now. She's had me busy ripping her CDs and DVDs and getting her some eBooks. It's as much fun for me as it is for her. Trouble is, she's going to need a bigger SD card before too long.

So if any of you do happen to get a gift certificate.. might look at one of these cool pens ;-)

hi guys,
well Santa Dell delivered a new DELL 2400 system on Christmas Eve! It was the basic Dimension 2400 system that DELL had partnered up with Sympatico.ca to offer for only $CA 399. I am using that to house my new DVD+-RW :) heh heh.. slightly more functionality than using a USB2.0 external case that I planned.. as my main machine is a HP Laptop.
I also got new Snowbaord gloves (nice!) and a new Rio Nitris 1.5gb player. Best Buy had them for $CA 299.
Going 'boarding this evening so will report how it performs later. (so far the software to copy to the Rio Unit is better than the dang Sony NetMD software I used to use when I had a NetMD)
cheers and beers to you all!

My favorite gift is from my wife: a Gyration Mouse & Keyboard (http://www.gyration.com/). Just what I needed to take the strain off my wrists! And it's AWESOME! Just sit back, up to 30 ft. away, and away you go.
We also got a 4MP Olympus camera, is uses xD cards, but I can live with that :) It was a very generous gift!

I have two: nebula silver/jupiter orange with a blue cartridge and a twilight grey/lunar grey one with a black cartridge.
You can get these pens in a dozen colors.. and 6 colors of refills! [I prefer blue] It's gel ink, so very, very smooth. I use mine every day. I study journalism, so I write a lot both in and out of class, so a good pen is an essential tool. This one - best. pen. ever.
<edit> Oh about the lanyard - Yes, the first one I bought came with a lanyard, but it costs extra. The second one came without a lanyard but with a nice plastic case. I carry my pens in my backpack, so I don't use the lanyard - too afraid of losing one :D

It's okay but considering the cost (double the price of most) I won't be buying another one. I hate the Ultra Clip. It adds 100% width to the Ipod!!! The whole point of a Ipod is that it's small the ultra clip doubles it's width! :(

Of course, one of the drawbacks to getting all of that computer stuff AND a desk is that you have to get it all set up. Took me about a day, but I'm very happy with the results. The desk is on casters, so it's a piece of cake to work on my PC and fiddle with cables - I just need to roll the desk forward and step behind it. No more crawling around on my hands and knees in the dusty, cable-infested darkness!
Hey! I just realized that I asked for 3 computer games, and I didn't get any of them! Maybe my wife is trying to tell me something...?

The speakers are good for what they are - I was actually pleasantly surprised by the good bass tones it gave off. Possibly overpriced at $149, but the fact that it docks the iPod (I like integrated packages), can charge it, can either run from AA batteries or off electricity and even hooks up to your computer while it's docked as there's a firewire port on the back. It also comes with a soft black pouch that you can put the speaker into - the whole thing folds into a compact package and is great for travelling.

I had a good Christmas this year too from Santa :) Earlier on in the year
I bought myself a 40GB Ipod (If you use EUPod (freeware) the volume restriction imposed by the EU isnt a problem anymore).
Im also using Anapod, prefer it over itunes.
Otherwise I got the Indiana Jones boxed set of DVDs, Hidden and Dangerous 2, Commandos 3, a really cool authentic antique map of europe, the targus optical mini retractable mouse (http://www.targus.com/uk/product_details.asp?sku=PAUM01E) its hard to believe how small this thing is :) A usb lamp that plugs into my laptop usb port, clips onto the screen and provides light for the keyboard, some shirts, aftershave etc.

You're not an addict..... er..... uh.... Pen Geek  until you get into foutain pens, read "Stylophyle" magazine at least occasionally, and drool over the annual catalogue from "The Fountain Pen Hospital" (http://www.fountainpenhospital.com/). My current favorite pen is an S.T. Dupont Fidelio, in which I use Tanzanite Private Reserve Ink (Just enough Purple in it to make it unique, but still dark enough to be professional).... but I've been wanting an Ophelio ($495) for a while now. There's a few others in the $200-$500 range that I'd like to own as well.
I'd also love to own at least one of the Namiki pens from the Yukari, Yukari Royale or Emperor collections..... but those suckers are in the $2100 - $4800 range and I just can't justify that for a pen. :?
There's one pen from an italian manufacturer in the current catalogue that lists for $15K for the normal version.... the limited edition is listed as "Please Call"... and I suppose that really means "if you have to call for the price you can't afford it". 8O
Cheers,
D.

I've never been a fan of fountain pens - yes, they're stylish and all, but they're difficult to use and just not practical for day to day use. I also carry a laptop with me, and god forbid I spill some ink in my backpack..
I used to use simple ballpoints, but once you go gel-based, you never go back. Soooo smooth, writing long pages becomes a pleasure instead of a chore. I made it my new mission in life to spread the joy of gel based pens to friends, family and classmates :D

Hmmmm..... I find my Fountain immenently practical for day to day use... and have never spilled or leaked ink (and I use Bottled Ink!!).
If you think Gel based inks are a joy..... Look me up and I'll let you borrow a decent pen with some decent ink. You don't even need to go for a high end of eather to get a better feel than any gel ink.... Say a Northpointe Aria (good quality stainless steel nib) and some reasonable ink (say some Parker or Waterman cartridges) and for under $40 total investment you'll give up that Cross, and if I gave you a decent flexible nib, say 14 carat gold nib.... you'd be hooked. My S.T. Dupont's 18K gold/Iridium plated nib with the PR ink..... it's like butter on a baby's butt.
The feel just can't be beat... it's a singular pleasure to take notes in meetings now.... and a joy to sit and hand write things.

Ohh hoh! I can tell you're definitely the pen-expert around here  Really, that good? I'm trying to find a wesite for Northpointe, but google isn't having much luck. I did find the Aria though - they also make them in ballpoint apparently.

Nice, very nice. But I don't think I can justify *anything* with 14 carat gold in it as a "school expense" anymore. Besides which, I'd be afraid to lose it or break it. What would be a good alternative? I definitely need something flexible - I've never enjoyed writing with a very hard nib which most pens seem to have. It'd have to be really smooth for me to give up gel ink pens.
The feel just can't be beat... it's a singular pleasure to take notes in meetings now.... and a joy to sit and hand write things.

Well, you convinced me. I think I'll do some research into fountain pens and see if I can find a nice one to start with.

You're not an addict..... er..... uh.... Pen Geek  until you get into foutain pens, read "Stylophyle" magazine at least occasionally, and drool over the annual catalogue from "The Fountain Pen Hospital" (http://www.fountainpenhospital.com/).
You should meet my officemate then. He makes actual trips to the Fountain Pen Hospital a couple times a year.... ;)

what a geek. ;)
Ohh hoh! I can tell you're definitely the pen-expert around here  Really, that good? I'm trying to find a wesite for Northpointe, but google isn't having much luck. I did find the Aria though - they also make them in ballpoint apparently.
I don't think they have a website..... but again, The Fountain Pen Hospital (http://www.fountainpenhospital.com/) is a good start for some quality pens at a good price, at least in the US. there's several other pens there that are good starters as well. You also might want to check out Glen's Pen Page (http://www.marcuslink.com/pens/) where there's some good information as well as a list of quality pen stores (including several in the Netherlands!)
If you go for a ballpoint, may as well stick with something a lot cheaper. the weight and balance of a fine ballpoint is going to be nice, but it's not really worth the added expense in my opinion.

For what it's worth, my Wife loves her Northpointe Aria.... I like it as well, it's surprisingly smooth and flexible for a stainless nib, and the heft and balance make for a very nice pen that feels like a far more expensive one. There are other pen lines that have gold nibs in a less expensive package.... the Aurora Ipsilon Deluxe has a 14K nib and is less than $100 retail. others have plated nibs. If one of the stores listed on Glen's Pen Page are near you, I'd go in and see what feels good.

Hehe..... only problem is that you can't stop once you get started.
Good luck!

Heh.... that sounds like a lot of fun! I'd like to get there for their annual pen show! I settle for a nice Pen Store in Palo Alto called Signatore... it's not quite as big as FPH, but they have a nice selection and it's 10 minutes from home.

I'm actually very lucky. I happen to live near a very good up-scale pen store. They sell everything from cheapo Parkers through Cross pens of all shapes and sizes to those very expensive Duponts and Mont Blancs. I don't usually visit the store, since I fear being tempted by that $300 18 carat gold Cross pen..

$100 sounds reasonable, but I definitely wouldn't spend more then that on one single pen. Poor student and all that

bjornkeizers,
My wife and I picked up our IONs today for $25 each. Saw some other colors at another store for $20 but kept the ones we had gotten. I got the aurora blue/mercury silver and she got the solar red. We both got lanyards and got an extra multi-pack of gel inks to try them all out.
I spent $75--curse you for getting me started on these. Now I'll have to collect all of them!

HP5550. PCMCIA/Battery Sleeve. CF Sleeve. And a 512mb SD Card. Oh, and a happy case to hold it with a sleeve on it.

 He's soooo cute. My only question is, why isn't a Pocket PC in one hand? ;)

That's funny. Folks at work doctored up one of the photos I sent to put an iPAQ in his hands. I'll see if I can find it on Monday and post it. It's pretty cute too.
As promised...

Just lay down the law at an early age. You will not tolerate your pocket pc's mixing with palms. He may tell you to tolerate other cultures, just tell him to come here and ask for some advice on which palm to get ;)
