How did y'all come to be members of pocketpcthoughts? what was the reason your browser opened up this page?
thanks for replying :)

Hmmmm..... no option for "My friend created the site." ;-)
dMores
12-21-2003, 08:13 PM
nope, that would be option "word-of-mouth".
lol :)
erm, i don't want to put that option in since last time i tried to change something, the whole poll was gone.

AFAIK, you can change a poll if there are no replies. Once there are replies, changing the poll can result in it disappearing. :|

It was a lonely night, me, PPC, and the bottle... when i came to, i was posting a Thank you (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=144520&highlight=#144520) or something.

i know what you mean. i can't remember properly either, i guess it was both google and other links, after stumbling across this page a number of times i sort of added it to my daily routine.
i guess it would be interesting to see how many word-of-mouth and helpdesk referrals there are.
It was by word-of-mouth! my friend Dale Coffing told me to go here.
Yes...I remember it like it was yesterday, now ain't that grand! :)

Several years ago, Dale Coffing's site was quite good. Then the news started slowing down. Then the news started becoming more about his travelling and less about Pocket PCs. A quick Google :google: and here I am!

First learned of the site on Dale Coffing's www.PocketPCPassion.com. Still go there at times. I come here every day.

Oh well, I'm glad I found this website

Exactly the same story here. I think it was probably Brighthand or PDABuzz as I started out with them, but it could have been PPC Passion. Either way, I'm glad I found it as well and it didn't take long until this was my main site to visit. Now, as I don't have nearly the time I used to (between job changes and a new baby), this is pretty much my only site.

I found it soon after getting my iPaq and hating it, because it seemed so inadequate compared to my Palm, so I had to find out if there was something I was missing, and here I came.

I've thought about this a couple of times before. I can't remember how I found this place. When I first started seriously looking for a PPC, this is just where I looked. It must have been from Google. Now that I think of it, wasn't there a section on pocketpc.com that listed some PPC web sites? I think there was, and of all of the links, I found pocketpcthoughts was the best and most informative of them all, and has been my main source of PPC stuff since. Ah, the memories.

Ditto - I've been around since the days it ran on Blogger, and Jason still ruled over the mighty Microsoft Pocket PC newsgroups

Yup, Blogger days for me too. I knew Jason from the newsgroups before. And even before that, he had a site on the Philips Velo, my device of choice back when. So I simply kept Jason on my radar, and followed him closely. I am still doing that. I'm aiming to be his favorite stalker. :)

i remember at the beginning, i didn't like to come here since the url was rather long, and i always mistyped the "thoughts" part :)
since i switched computers frequently i never bothered to add it to my favorites.
i think when i added it to my "links" part of the IE did i start to come here more often.
i also found there was just a little too much info for me. only when i discovered the "show new links" link i was able to get info quickly and specifically.
hey, i just noticed i made it to the front page !!!
woohooo ! :D :)

lol... I always hated typing p-o-c-k-e-t-p-c-t-h-o-u-g-h-t-s-.-c-o-m too.. too darn long, and yet I never added it to my favorites. :p I always used the autocomplete feature of ie. Only about a month ago did I add it to the 'links' section of ie (actually, now i use the ie shell myie2 but I configured it to have a links section too)... much easier to visit the site now. Who knows why I havn't done that before (and I've visited the site almost every day since shortly after it's beginnig, many days multiple times, and when I'm bored or should be studying, I visit like 15 times a day to see if there is any news).
I used to visit dalecoffing.com and I hated it when the domain changed to pocketpcpassion.com (dalecoffing.com didn't work for a while so I hated having to type in another long url :p).
How I found it? I can't remember.. it was back in the day when I was researching whether I should by an ipaq or an e125 (went with the e125--which is dead now)... I _think_ it was a link from pocketpcpassion.com...at first I didn't like this site, but it had much more updates so I ended up linking it a lot more than any other site.
Now I rarely ever visit other sites. I figure if anything important happens, it'll show up here so no need to check 527 ppc sites every day :)

Ya, that's how I found this place. Oddly enough, I found PDABuzz from the mad exodus from Brighthand. Er... The Tinman one. There's just to many scandels over there.

Same here. I had noted PPCT while at "The PDA site formerly edited by Wes Salmon" and when most people left I tried a few, but ended up here as the best of the lot. :D

It was either a link through PDA Avenue, Pocket Gamer, or Pocket PC Passion, which worked out pretty poor for all of them.
While I still check Pocket PC Thoughts multiple times daily, I would say I only check the others once a week now.
For shame :-)

Way back in early '02 there was a major outage at Brighthand and I started looking around for a new "home". I had been by PPCThoughts a few times but had never spent much time. I think I had seen the link after doing an internet search...or it may have been another ppc discussion forum. After lurking around the PPCThoughts forum for a while I realized the user base here was really outstanding and that the site was really well run. Signed up in Feb-2002 and its become my first...and main...stop on the internet.

Well, I had just bought my (used) Jornada the week before daBuzz debacle, I was quite loathe to come here at first because of some unpleasent exchanges I had with Ed there, but I needed some PPC resources......so here I came (I just lurked for quite some time). I've softened on Ed since then (and I think/hope he's done the same for me) to the level of healthy respect. While I don't consider this my "home", it is clearly a neighborhood stop.
I also share Jason's interest in digital video, so the good digs are here for that too....(and soon to be DMT).

Wow. I'm surprised no one is mentioning Brighthand... I thought a lot of us had started as posters there. Once Brighthand started splitting attention between PPC and Palm, I started to look elsewhere and the two sites that came up frequently was Dale Coffing's PPC Passion and this site.
All it takes is one or two days visiting this site and you start the realize the abundance of information that was posted here everyday by Jason and his small crew (there was no discussion board at that time, just a ton of news updates with random comments from readers).

Truthfully, if Brighthand was going to be my measure for the future, I never would've gone any further. A lot of crap goes on there and on PDA Buzz, and I don't even want to be a part of it.
Ugh.

I started out at PDABuzz (several years ago), then found Brighthand. When the TinMan exodus happened, I went back to PDABuzz. When the exodus there happened, I didn't really know where to go. A bunch of people were recommending going to pocketpcthoughts.com. I had seen this site before, but never really came here often. I kept PPCThoughts in mind, but for a while mostly went to some other PDA sites where most of the former Buzz group was.
Eventually, I noticed that this site had by far the best news.. where other sites posted a few pieces of news a day, this site went into much more detail, and simply reported things that most sites didn't. So I came here for news, and eventually registered in the forums, but didn't post much. After like 6 months, since the other forums were kind of slowing down, I decided to take a better look at the forums here. I liked what I saw. :) And so here I am, a year and 300 posts later... ;)

Thanks again to Dale Coffing. I believe it was as far back as when he was holding contests to guess the date he would get his first 1,000,000 hits. Anyhow, it was sometime the first part of 2000. I don't even bother with the other mentioned sites much anymore. This place is the definitive.

I too have been lurking here since the Blogger days in 2000, and started a blog back then, never did do anything with it though. Went thru the Brighthand and PDABuzz days too and never was very impressed with them. Still watch for the occasional update at Dales site, but this has been home for years. Never have posted much, but have learned so much from everyone here.

I've followed Jason's thoughts on these things since he wrote in a newsgroup the first decent review that anyone had done on the Velo 1. That review largely led to my choosing the Velo over the Palm Pilot I was also considering at the time and I've never owned a PDA that wasn't WinCE based. Since then, I've come and gone from the community, as other obligations dictate my life more than my PPC addiction, but one day someone mentioned Jason's blog in a newsgroup and I've hung out here ever since.

Early on, it was a toss up between Dale, Dave (of Dave's Ipaq (http://www.davesipaq.com)) and Brighthand. Then things got a bit ugly, fresh news seemed to dry up, and I started surfing for a new home. I landed at PPCT in the Winter of 01, and came out from behind the "guest" curtain in the summer of 02, and have made a daily stop or two (or 3 or 10 or...) ever since :)

It's funny how the success of the Pocket PC mirrors the success of Pocket PC Thoughts in one way...
Pocket PC's are popular among the people who own them because they evangelize them to those who don't (usually, and mercifully steering them away from Palm-based handhelds).
Pocket PC Thoughts seems to have picked up a large chunk of its readers through its "word of mouth" so to speak by links on other sites.
It's not exactly the same thing, but it is interesting to me anyway...

I too have been lurking here since the Blogger days in 2000, with my new
HP 540 PPC (the Ipaq 3100 then Dell Axim X5). Time and PPC's have changed quite a bit since then.
It's the news at PPC Thoughs that brought me here. It is still my #1 site
I check several times a day! Way to go Jason and Team..

Thanks for all your comments everyone - reading this thread was very interesting to me (sorry about how long the domain is - we had ppct.com for a while, but no one used it and now it's taken). It was also a great way to start 2004, because all of the positive comments were really encouraging. :D
