View Full Version : I'm Going To See a Movie Tonight...

As much as I vowed I never would do it, I am going to see the latest "Lord of the Rings" movie tonight. I am definitely not a fan of the genre, mostly because I'm really bad with names anyway, and these flicks make it impossible for me to talk about them afterward:<br /><br />Me: "Remember when Frodo did that <i>thing</i>...?"<br />LOTR Aficionado: "Dude, that was NOT Frodo, that was Aragorn's mother!"<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/adrian/lotr.jpg" /><br /><br />Still, today is my sweet daughter's 12th birthday, so, being the progressive father that I am, I agreed to take her and a dozen or so of her closest friends to a 7pm showing of "Long Live the King" (or whatever the title is). She says it's kinda long, but I'm not too worried; even if I get bored, it's not like it's more than 3˝ hours long, right?

Not good with names and you're going to herd a dozen 12-year-olds? You're a braver man than I! :D

He gave them Pocket PC pseudonyms - the only names he can remember... :D
He did the same with us MVPs (on every MVP meeting) so he will not remember who is posting this until I tell you my pseudonmy... ;-) Kidding!!! :)

Have fun Brad and it might be a good chance to listen the latest Audiobooks if you don't remember the movie anyway... ;-)

Right there with you, Brad. I've refused up to this point to see any of them, but only because I didn't want to wait a year in between each of the three movies. Once they come out on DVD I might give them a shot.

Have fun!

Btw, I just loved the first two and can't wait to see the last one (Monday for me).

I read the books (Hobbit through ROTK) five times before the first movie came out. Then after each movie came out I read the books once, and I just ifnished Return of the King yesterday for my 7th time readign the series! Woo I'm so pumped to see the finale today at 5... I love this series..

But I would never go with a dozen 12 year olds...

...ever....

I would assume they will be screaming for Orland Bloom (plays Legolas, the skinny elf). Here's today's FoxTrot comic I figure you guys might enjoy, it has to do with girls seeing that movie

Maybe that's why I can't get the name right...It makes me think of "ROTF."

Now, if that means this is a comedy, maybe I won't be so bored after all...

Ah, The Lord Of The Rings,

I get bored by that type of Genre, but 2 of my friends went to the "The Lord of The Rings Marathon" - all 3 special edition extended versions in a row with 2 1 hour breaks for 14 hours in a movie theatre. All for $50, and they got to see the latest one 2 days early.

Talk about passion for a movie. I say movie geeks. :D :)

As someone who saw it today at 12:01am, I have to say that this was the greatest movie I have ever seen. I thought it would be hard for me to say awak, but NO, I was wide awake the entire time. It was INCREDIBLE! I'm planning on seeing it again this weekend too, then maybe another time. I can't wait until they release a DVD set with the extended editions of all three. I will then spend a day watching them all in a row. The third movie has FIVE AND A HALF HOURS total! This movie has action, drama, romance (ehh...), and some comedy, if it doesn't win best picture, I'm going to protest the academy awards.

EXCELLENT MOVIE! I agree with Jason - Christian themes and images are everywhere in LOTR, even if they weren't intended.

Yeah! I'm going to see it tonight, I can't wait!

Makes me wonder though, since it is a longer movie, how often do the theatres need to show it in order to make a profit? :?: You could show a "regular" length movie at least one more time per day than you could any of the LOTR movies.

YAWN!

I fell asleep during the first one and all the hype and build up is completely lost on me. No interest whatsoever.

The only movie I have EVER fallen asleep in was "The Poke'mon Movie" that I took my then 9 year old to see.

I don't see how anyone could fall asleep in one of these movies because the scenery is so spectacular....that alone would be enough to keep ones interest..... 8O

I am excited about seeing it too...but can't take my son (now 12) tonight as that is a bit late for a school night. Guess I better buy tickets early for this weekend.

Went to see Return Of The King this afternoon. Really enjoyed it. Almost as good as Fellowship and much better than Two Towers.

Projector broke about half way through the movie, the movie stopped, the house lights came up and the commercials started playing again. Arggh! Right at a tense moment too. Started again after about 5 minutes. Theatre did give everyone a free pass as we left the theatre. Maybe I'll go see it again tomorrow.

Any have a big chunk of land with meadows, mountains, valleys, and dales sitting around?

We could all chip in and build a Rivendell, Shire, Helmsdeep, etc., make them look as realistic as possible... Can you imagine how many people would love to live in any one of those locations?

Of course we'd have it all set up with WiFi so we could be connected via Pocket PC to the "rest of the world" while in our Hobbit holes... ;)

Makes me wonder though, since it is a longer movie, how often do the theatres need to show it in order to make a profit? You could show a "regular" length movie at least one more time per day than you could any of the LOTR movies.

For first-run movies most theaters make next to nothing on ticket sales for the first several weeks. The studios take something like 80-90% (?) of the sales for a long time. The income comes from concession stand sales. I wonder if for an LOTR-style movie people buy *more* food rather than less, since if you're going to sit for 3.5 hours there's nothing else to do but eat...

I dug around a bit, for LOTR it looks like the theaters have to kick back 90% of ticket sales to the studio. CNN|Money had an article (http://money.cnn.com/2002/03/08/smbusiness/q_movies/) on the subject of theater economics too.

MaximumPDA

I would think they would get an increase in concession stand sales as most people may watch through the dinner time and its such a long movie. There are huge markups on popcorn and soda but like NeilE said the studios take most if not all the profit from the movie itself. I worked at theater one summer and they really pushed snack sales.

NeilE...Snohomish, w00t! I'm in Lake Stevens. We are going to Monroe tonight to see ROTK.

Saw the movie last night at the 12:01 show and it was absolutely amazing. I was stunned by it. I've read several reviews that have proclaimed this series the best trilogy of movies ever, and I cannot say that I disagree with them. The scale of the action, mixed with very personal intimate moments and powerful story are unmatched in any series of movies I've seen before.

The effects are absolutely jaw-dropping in several instances, though I won't say anything about plot points. But they don't over-power the story like in the Matrix films. I'm not a big fantasy-genre fan (though I love these films), and I think even those that were not big fans of the first two will come out of this one amazed at the feat of filmmaking by Peter Jackson.

Just got back from the show.

It was like I was at an Emeril Lagasse show.

Every 5 freaking minutes, something happened that made the audience HAVE TO CLAP

I"M SORRY But I cannot STAND when people clap so much. I think it ruins the movie.. I no doubt applaud the movie, and teh efforts of the actors, and crew, and director, etc.. But you can at least wait untli the END for those who are trying to pay attention...
UGH. I just wish I didn't have to deal with that hassle, along with the others of watching a movie opening day.

Anyway.
amazing movie! It was largely different from the book, but I was impressed nonetheless. I think it was a good ending to the cinematic trilogy, and I urge anyone who is thinking about seeing it to go see it immediately. I felt a few things that were left out from the books could have helped the movie, but meh, what do I know, I'm not Peter Jackson

I went to a LOTR marathon tuesday/wednesday. All three movies! It was a very, very long sit, I can tell you that. The third one premiered 00:05 yesterday morning, and we were the first ones to see it.

I'm not a big LOTR fan, never even read the books, but I did like all three, and the third one, while a bit predictable, is a good movie nonetheless

One problem with the movie and the books that bothered me, though I'm not sure how I would fix it, myself, is how easy it is to stereotype. The Orcs were the bad guys. How do we know they're the bad guys? Because everything about them is ugly. Their faces are hideous, their attire is atrocious, their hygiene is non-existent, and I'm sure their breath smells very, very badly. Watch them as they walk in the movie. None of them can walk straight. They hunch over or even shake as they walk. All of them are dressed in black. I should have liked to see a symmetrical orc, where neither his face nor his posture was deformed.

This greatly feeds off our deeper conditions, as we assume anything imperfect to be either evil or sick. Also keep in mind that this is meant to be read by children. Tolkien thus not only feeds off these conditions, but fortifies them.

But that's not to say that the books/movies were not very damn entertaining.

For those that enjoy thinking about things from every point of view possible, read this (http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2002/12/17/tolkien_brin/index.html?x) :)

It's an analysis of the Lord of the Rings by David Brin, the Hard Sci-Fi author. His books usually take a good look at social development under many contexts, and his poke at this as well as his previous article on Star Wars are both insightfull and funny.

I just had a few friends round for Pizza & to watch the extended edition of Two Towers in preparation for ROTK. Wow - it's amazing how much better the film seems with the extra 30 minutes of footage in it. Glad we had comfy seets though. At nearly four hours long it is a bit of a bumfest.

LOTR - ROTK, No questions asked!!!

T3 - sucks on so many levels I don't want to even begin
Matrix 3 - dissapointed since Reloaded.... Revolutions, didn't pick up the fancy of Matrix 1

But... what can I say, I have no excuse, I'm a fan of the three and already have T3 on DVD, and am planning on getting the other two as soon as they come out

That's a very funny review, sublime. My favorite part was where he compared a part about elves to being in a candle store for twenty minutes.

That and "...there’s a lot of lines like, “Rohan shall ride!” and “Gondor still stands!” and “Flabadan Son of Rectum must wear the mantle of Bloggith!"

Also, people who haven't seen the movie or read the books should NOT read that review - he gives a bunch of stuff away at the end.

I took the day off on Wednesday to see it at the Uptown in DC. Waited in line for a couple of hours in the rain but it was definitely worth the wait. As far as I am concerned, the series is undoubtedly the best trilogy ever. It was so awesome! I was never into the whole fantasy genre and had never read the books as a kid--that was for all the D&D geeks--but I must say that I became hooked after Fellowship of the Rings and have never looked back. I am even contemplating reading the books. Do they come in ebook format?

Opposed to ebooks? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard :( Opposed to reading them, maybe, but opposed to allowing a book to be published as one?

Anyway I own them on paper so maybe I'll seek out one of those "illegitimate sources" so that I can finish reading the 3rd one on my PPC(after I finally get to see the movie that is!)

Most publishers want to put stuff in ebook format. It is a cheaper distribution model and another revenue source. 9 out of 10 times when it isn't in an ebook format, it is the author or copyright holder stopping it. What they don't get is if your stuff is popular enough, like Clancy or Tolkien, it will be available in electronic format, just free on usenet. :? I don't recall seeing many published ebooks hacked on usenet.
