Right now, I have a very low battery and no charger with me... that's fine, I'll charge when I get home. The problem is that my ppc keeps turning itself on every 10 minutes (or so) to tell me my battery is low, draining the battery further and faster! Is there some way to turn off this notification other than removing the battery? (Corollary question - how long does the backup battery last with no main battery installed?)

Or on the other hand, is it not supposed to be warning me every 10 minutes at all? There are no other apps running, the only thing I have non-stock is PI and the PI Today plugin - do either of these have any problems with turning units on periodically? Wi-fi and BT are both turned off, no running apps are reported, etc.

Any thoughts?

It should NOT be turning itself on every ten minutes to complain about a low battery - that's not right. Try a soft reset, then turn the power off. Does it still turn on then?

I did try that previously...

Argh... Now don't I feel foolish. Turns out it's my email trying to check for new messages every 10 minutes. Of course, my wi-fi is turned off, so it can't get a connection, so it turns on to complain about not having a connection. Since the battery is low when it turns on, I get the low-battery warning as well. I just shut off the auto email check and voila! Problem solved.

Thanks anyway Jason.

Mine does the same thing, but it's every 15 minutes... here's the cool part... it'll "wake up" and the bluetooth/WiFi LEDs will blink 6 or 8 times, then they'll stop... but the screen will stay off.

If i've got another reminder (appointment, low battery, etc.) the screen will turn on to (presumably) show me that.

Yeah that's what happened with me. Presumably I never noticed the activity before since I keep my iPAQ well-charged. It's a good thing to know, though - didn't immediately jump out at me what exactly caused this behavior.
