View Full Version : Have you Named your Pocket PC?

Jon Westfall

In This post (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21521&highlight=) we find a deeply moving story about the death of a pocket pc, which has caused some to ask: Have you named your pocket PC? And if so, what?. Obviously, computer name doesn't apply (i.e. Pocket_PC), we're talking about a personal name here.

It'll be interesting to see - I haven't named mine... yet.

I name all the computers on my LAN after Japanese words & weapons: Tsunami, Wakazashi, Katana, Tanto, Little Shogun...but my laptop is named Defiant, after the Deep Space Nine ship, mostly because it's small but still kicks ass.

PPC = Julliette, maybe related to a girl I used to date when I was a teenager, still in love ... with the PPC of course :D ; if my wife comes arround here tell her I wrote this with a 45 Colt pointing straight between my eyes

LapTop = S***tBox, if my wife is still here, ask her why, I ended up calling it as she does from the very beginning.

My old Pentium II was the first computer that someone in my family named QWERTY (think: VeggieTales). When I got my Gateway computer about two years ago, I named it "Gater" -- appropriate, given that I live in Florida and we have a lot of alligators.

So when I got my PPC, it became Snapper. My kids, wife and I all refer to it as that.

I tend to name my devices after literary characters...

My 2215 is named Bombadil (after my favorite Tolkien character), and my 3835 is named Fagan (Dicken's leader of the pictpockets in Oliver Twist)

All my computers are "named" because they have to be. But I don't usually *refer* to them by their names, or anything like that.

I tend to use the names of computers from Sci-Fi movies/TV.

As a rule I am not one for naming my stuff - but sometimes a name just sticks. In my Newton days I always found the name "The Newton" to be pretty user friendly in a way that "The Pocket PC" or "The Jornada" just isn't. As a result the name that seems to have stuck is simply "The Gadget"!

I do the same...

Currently, I have a Colossus, Guardian, HAL9000, M5 and my Pocket PC's Huey and Duey...

Now does anybody know where all of those names came from???

I am an adult with ADD, my iPAQ is named ABBY, after the brain used in Young Dr. Frankenstein, Abby Normal. It acts as and extension of my brain that keeps me from forgeting.

I think Dr. Evil and Mini Me are my favorite names so far.

Well Colossus and Gaurdian could be comics based also ;) But I think you mean "The Forbin Project" (Colossus) but Gaurdian has me stumped.....do you mean "Gaurdian" or Guardian? ;)

HAL9000 from 2001 (obvious)

M5 was Dr Daystrum's computer that "automated" and almost destroyed the Enterprise (a descendant of Daystrum's was a character in a TNG episode AIR).

Huey and Dewey as Kati pointed out....are ducks....but they were also two of the three robot pals of Buce Dern in "Silent Running".

thanks Steve.....you bring out the best useless knowledge in me :D ;)

I tend to insult my pc's/ppc's... e.g. My desktop is "Hooker", my server is "AssMaster" and my mda is "Slut".

Don't read into these, please.... They are just for fun :)

By the way, I'm not always like that, for example: my old pc that I ordered from newegg was named "Compton". Mainly due to the fact that in transit my order sat in Compton, CA for the weekend, and partially in honor of Easy E. AHAHAH

Yeah, that's about enough about that... lol

Alas, I have not come up with a suitable naming convention for my PCs/PPC...

currently my PPC is named: myMemoryBox
laptop: myVAIO
desktop: dimensions
server: websheep

Greek characters are too common.. My old work place, an ISP, named all their servers after greek characters... zeus, hades, hera, oden...

Then there's always planets.. I forget which ISP here uses that now...

I want something original. I like Jason's with the Japanese weapons and words. The best so far that I've seen.

My Axim's current name is Zem. Not because of Invader Zim (not sure what that is) but because of the mattresses of Squornshellous Zeta. They are all named Zem:

They are large, friendly, pocket-sprung creatures which live quiet private lives in the marshes of Squornshellous Zeta. Many of them get caught, slaughtered, dried out, shipped out and slept on. None of them seem to mind and all of them are called Zem.

My iPAQ 5455 is often referred to as "the toy."

For years, I have used the same naming scheme - my main home PC is always Dragon, my laptop Wyvern, and my Pocket PC is usually Gryphon, but this time I named it iPaq_5450 for some reason.

All machines in my house are named after something in Star Wars (including expanded universe)...

Deathstar, Vader, Yoda, ATAT, ATST, TIE, Obiwan, Anakin, Mara, IG-88, and my iPAQ is named Lobot.

By the way, Ed Hansberry mentioned wakazashi as one of his japanese words/weapons names... it's actually spelled / pronounced "wakizashi".

FYI, I'm japanese by blood and do speak the language natively. I was surprised to see the website selling japanese weapons having it misspelled, but then again, we've managed to screw up many other foreign words as well, so why stop now?

Actually, that was me. How very interesting - I've seen countless books and Web sites spell it "Wakazashi". Google has over 2000 hits for that spelling - but over 35,000 for "Wakizashi". So I guess I'll believe you then. ;-) Thanks for chiming in!

Sorry about that Jason... I must've gotten confused while looking back a few pages... Is there an easy way to quote somebody from a post that's not immediately before your reply? Or is there a way to reply to an earlier post? oh well...

Anyway, yeah this misspelling thing probably comes from people mispronouncing foreign words, then trying to spell the word based on the mispronounciation. Another good one ought to be "Karaoke" (note that this is the correct spelling), but I have a feeling we'll see some variation of this spelling just because the word is pronounced so differently than the original. Hearing my co-workers talk about it, and if I wasn't japanese, I'd probably guess the spelling to be Kareeokee.

I guess we'll see in a few years or so...
