Or, rather, I can't get my files back.

This is the second time it's done this hard-reset crap in the past three months. Batteries are fine; I just abruptly discover that it's been hard-reset. I recreated the partnership with my PC, and it synchronized Outlook data fine, but it can't seem to handle files. It gives me insane sync times (90+ minutes) and then disconnects itself after a few minutes, having synchronized nothing. This is the procedure I used last time to get my system back... anyone ever encounter anything like this?

Given the instability of your device I would recommend that, as well as regular activesyncs for data, that you do a total system backup regularly as well. You can do this from either Activesync (Tools | Backup/Restore) of with some third party backup software to a memory card.

I use Proporta Backup Pro (http://www.proporta.com) but there are other solutions as well.

Turns out the problem was my hub; by plugging directly into my laptop instead of going through a USB2.0 hub, I was able to get synced up. Now that I'm restored, the hub works fine - I think it just choked on the quantity of data I was sending through it.

I don't really need to worry too much about backup software; thanks to full file sync, I can get fully restored in less than fifteen minutes. File sync, Wisbar, tAgenda, Mobipocket, Fitaly, and Palm Reader. Poof! Done.

It's still annoying me, and I think I may call Dell and see about a replacement unit.

Axim X5 units have some known issues with USB hubs unfortunately...
