I have a question that many searches have failed to turn up an
answer so I will ask here to see if anyone knows.

What I am trying to do is run activesync from one PC that is
connected remotely with Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection to
another PC.

I have two PCs running XP Pro the one that is upstairs I use most of
the time and that is the one I have my PDA (Ipaq 5455) hooked up
to. The one that is downstairs is the one I run all email through.
I remote from my upstairs PC to the downstairs one for email and
work docs. I need to keep this configuration.

So, in the remote desktop software there is an option to select the
serial ports of the local machine to bring over to the remote host.
I have that selected thinking I can remote into the downstairs pc
and sync the PDA while connected via the serial cable to the
upstairs pc. I have activesync installed on the downstairs PC.

With the PDA turned on and hooked up via serial connection to the
upstairs PC, I remote into the downstairs PC and run active sync to
search for the device. It first goes to com 1 and my pda reacts by
showing the connecting window so that tells me that activesync is
talking from the downstairs PC to the upstairs PC through to the pda.

The pda then goes through this retry 1 retry 2 retry 3 and
eventually times out. I then get an error on the software saying
that a device could not be found. It looks like I have one way
communication that hits the pda but the pda isn't getting back
through the same channel.

Is it possible to do it this way and if what am I doing wrong? If
not what would be an alternative that is relatively painless?

If you need more info please let me know.

Thanks in advance. :?:

ActiveSync does not work over the RPC protocol, even when the serial ports have been redirected.

And an FYI - you don't need to hit return after each line. The board will wrap the lines for each client depending on the screen size. ;-)

Thanks for the quick response, even though not the one I was hopping for.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish the same thing without having to physically be at the downstairs pc or am I doomed to adding another cradle and making the trip downstairs once a day?

I also broke the first post up into paragraphs for easier reading

You can remote activesync if you are connected by TCP/IP. I wirelessly sync with my laptop which is usually upstairs. You can also use bluetooth if you have a BT adapter on your PC.

As for para breaks, yeah, that works. It was the hard return after each line. Resize your IE window and notice how your line breaks get out of whack. :D

I suggest syncing over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth with the remote PC while viewing it via Remote Desktop.

Great, thanks alot guys, now I'm off to learn how to do that.

Ok, I know this is a cop out but can you point me in the right direction on this one?

There is a WiFi card in this 5455 and I have a wireless router which it grabs an IP from, now what?

Ok, it seems that "it just knows how to do it"

So when I click sync on the pda and I'm remoted into the downstairs PC I can see that its syncing but all items say that they require attention. When I check outlook nothing has changed so the info is not being synced. Looking into why.

It connects and syncs but then I get the error.

Information Type Not Synchronized

Items of one or more information types cannot be synchronized. Disconnect and reconnect your device.

To view all error messages and dialog boxes that require your input, you must connect to this computer via infrared or serial/USB cable.

It looks like it trys to sync but then shows Attention required by the Calendar, tasks and notes which are the only items I have in the list.

Any ideas?

Sorry for being so clueless.

looks like plugging the pda into that PC and syncing did the trick. I can now sync via WiFi.

Thank you all and know I will leave you alone. :D
