I just got an e740 a week or so ago and the wireless was working great, but just the other day it started doing this thing where once I flip the switch on the bottom to enable wifi, itll turn it on for a brief instant and then turn it off again. The icon indicates that the switch is flipped on and its disabled by software, but every time I click on the icon and press "on" it wont stay on for more than that little instant. Does anyone know what the problem is? I could always hard reset it, but I dont want to lose all of my configuration if I dont have to, or if it wouldn't help.

Also, a quick question about WEP, I have a network at home that uses a 128bit WEP with a 9-char ascii passcode. On the pda, however, it will only accept passcodes that are a certain length (like 13 chars or something similar?). Is there any way to use my network at home without changing to a 13 char passcode?

I had an e740 and it often got "confused" about the state of the WiFi hard switch. I would turn on the hard switch and then turn on the soft switch and get a message telling me to turn on the hard switch. I usually had to soft-reset it to get it to work. I never came up with a better work around than that.

BTW, Toshiba did have an updated ROM that was supposed to clear up some WiFi issues. It's available on their site (if you don't already have it), although it didn't help my problem any.

Hmm...

Wasn't there a procedure for pulling the battery for a few seconds to fix "weird" WIFI problems with Toshiba's???

Am I going crazy??? :wink:

Thanks for the info on the updated ROM, maybe I'll get that at some point...

But the problem wasn't that it was confused about the hardware switch, its the software switch that keeps turning off. It's never told me to turn the hardware switch on, the software one just wont stay... I guess I should just suck it up and give it a hard reset. I know this is off-topic for this forum, but since its related to the message, is there a way to preserve the program information for programs stored on memory cards? Like, I've installed everything to a memory card, but when I reset I'll lose the shortcuts and with some programs things like stored settings... sorry I dont know how to say it better.

Thanks! :)

You could do a backup before your hard reset, that would keep you from losing all your shortcuts, etc. Short of that I don't know of any way to keep your programs intact through a hard reset since you would not only need the program files (which you have on a card) but also any Registry data as well. If it were me I'd try:

1. Back everything up and do a hard reset and see if that corrects the switch problem;
2. Restore from the backup and check to see if the problem returns;
3. Try the updated ROM (if you don't already have it);
3. If it still refuses to work, then I'd hard reset again and rebuild the system app by app and check for the problem to return as you go. Perhaps an app is behaving badly.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

thanks for all your help
the hard reset did the trick, altho for some reason I can't make the updated ROM work... I guess I'll go to the appropriate forum to fix that one if I ever really feel the need to update >_<
thanks again
