View Full Version : iPAQ 4350 & AvantGo Not Working

I just got myself the 4350. I set it up with all my usual software, synchronized to outlook without any issues. The whole setup went off without a problem except for my connection to AvantGo.

The problem I am having is that AvantGo looks like it synchs without an issue in AS but when I go to my PPC nothing shows up. Also there is no AG icon in the settings/connections page. I can't navigate to the avantgo directory either, there are no pages in the directory at all.

I have tried everything including a hard reset and also setting up AS & AG again without any success. Is anyone else having this problem?

I had the same problem, but on an 5555. Everyone told me a hard reset would do the trick, but I found a solution that worked for me. Here's my post (http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93967).

Thanks for that info Ed.

So its pnly a 27 step process to get Avantgo working, including editing the registry? How F^&*ed up us that! How can anyone seriously release a product that requires this sort of interaction to get it working.

Yet another piss poor effort from a software house.

Thanks again Ed, not ranting at you, I much appreciate the link, and will try that when I have a couple hours to spare. Its not that important, and I am forming the opinion it is not important at all. Not worth that effort. Not much Australian content...

NO, not at all! Only 3. If you read my last post with the new subject SUCCESS with Avantgo on PPC2003 with NO HARD RESET!!!! . I got fed up and tried a whole bunch of stuff, but after doing some thinking, all the is required are steps 4,5, & 6. It states the following:
4. I thought, maybe by chance I have the wrong version of Avantgo, so I download and installed Mobile Internet for PPC (version 3.3 build 1056).

5. I was looking at my PPC during the install and noticed that it was installing smelter.rarm.CAB. Realizing that step 2 was using an old file, I looked on my laptop for smelter.rarm.CAB and found it under C:\Program Files\AvantGo\ce\smelter.rarm.CAB so I copied that file to my PPC and reinstalled it. I figured, since Avantgo wasn't working, it wouldn't matter. When it completed, it requested a reset. I realized all the previous installs never displayed a message doing so.

6. After my device reset, I went to Internet Explorer and click on Avantgo Channels. I realize that the local file on my PPC (\windows\agdefault.htm) was not being used this time so I was thinking "Maybe it's working?" and by golly...IT WAS A SUCCESS. My channels showed up! WOOOOHOOOO!!!

Read the last post on that thread again (http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93967).

Those steps did not work for me.

I tried to installsmelter.rarm.CAB, both from the PC, using ActiveSynch, and by downloading it to the PPC and running it. It says that Avantgo is already installed, and exits. There is also no way to remove Avantgo from the installed apps, so I am caught in catch 22.

The install is faulty. The install over top dies not work. I cannot uninstall it.

Any other ideas for getting Avantgo work?

Have Avantgo mentioned anything about this obvious problem?

Thanks
David

I never said I uninstalled anything. Just reinstalled.

When you copy the CAB file to your PPC, close ActiveSync. I think I had the similar problem before and having ActiveSync running gave the same issue. Make sure the ActiveSync process isn't running.

Great little app for killing the ActiveSync processes on your PC: ActiveSync Toggle... (http://www.micrologics.co.uk/library/ast/)

I cannot reinstall over the existing install.

It says it is already installed, and exits the install. I did not have activesync running, and I also tried a soft reboot before trying the install. Nothing would allow me to run the install you mention.

As I said, catch 22. The install of Activesync on my PPC is a dud, but I cannot install a propper one because the install already exists, and I cannot uninstall the existing activesynch, as it comes with the OS. Not a lot I can see that I can do here.

But did you copy the cab file to your PPC, stop the activesync process on your PPC, and then install from the cab file?

I did the following:

1) Copy smelter.rarm.cab to iPAQ.
2) soft reset iPAQ, just in case.
3) Go into Settings/Memory/Running Programs and make sure ActiveSynch is not running
4) Start File Explorer
5) Locate and run smelter.rarm.cab.
6) I get the following message:
"A newer version of this product has already been installed on this device. Installation will not continue. Please Ignore any setup failed messages."

And I cannot go any further.

I dunno how you got it installed. Did you have PPC 2003 at the time? Maybe I have a later OS version. Its PPC 2003, latest patches, iPAQ 5550

Thanks
David

I downloaded the recent version at their website. Rather strange, becuase I have H5555, with all the latest firmware, updates, etc. also and never had that problem. Not much difference between the H5550 and H5555 is just one you buy online and the other you can buy at the store. Maybe give HP a call.
