In numerous threads on this site we see posts that have people saying "I've convinced 3 friends to buy a Pocket PC" or "My brother saw me using one and went out and purchased his own iPAQ." I'd like to see how many people you've influenced over the years into buying a Pocket PC.

Well, my whole family. I started out getting a Pocket PC (3135) for my wife when I had an old Compaq E11. I then bought one for myself and upgraded every 6 months or so and handed them down to my kids and extended family. In my family alone, we have 5 functional Pocket PC devices and several broken ones.

Speaking of broken Pocket PC devices, I have a 221x with a cracked, but still functional screen. Anyone know the cost of repairing it? I bought one for my oldest daughter through the educational discount - I would hate to pay nearly as much to fix it as it was to buy it in the first place.

Now, I dont have to use my Conduits Peacemaker as often as before. I should get a voucher from HP for all that stuff, I'm nota retailer or anything, people just see me use my 2210 for EVERYTHING but cooking.

What do I select if I have convinced people not to buy a PocketPC. After all its not the answer to everything!

I think you would fall into the

Hey, you haven't even convinced me to buy one yet

category.

Whoops, shoulda looked closer. I have influenced 8 people to get a PDA but 3 of them ended up being Palms (though one switched recently.). And yes, there are occasions when I will recommend a Palm over a PPC.

Need another survey... "How many people have you talked out of buying a PPC?"

Since I bought my first PPC in June, I've been asked for advice on buying a handheld by maybe 10 people. About half asked my opinion of PocketPC's specifically.

After listening to their needs, I recommended a PalmOS device to every one of them.

They basically all wanted the same things: calendar, contacts, todos, Avantgo and Vindigo, MP3 playback and a few games. They didn't want wireless networking or video playback. They were appalled that they might have problems with alarms that don't go off.

Tungsten E's are what I'm recommending now to most people.

In my case, I worked at a Staples over the summer and became known as the "PDA Guy". I wouldn't even bother with the demo units sometimes, I would pull out my own 3955, and later my own 2215, and tell people all about how great Pocket PC is. Whenever the PALM rep came in, he'd try to talk me up on Palms, and I would make fun of all of his supposed great features. Was really amusing when he tried to impress me by connecting to the internet with his bluetooth Tungsten T, then i did the same with my 2215 and downloaded email and logged onto AIM simultaneously

Lessee...

My boss got talked into his Dell Axim when his Cassiopeia E100 failed. But he was already a PPC user, so I don't think he counted.
Then the guy across the cube farm liked my EM-500 more than his Palm, so I talked him into a Dell too.
Then I finally broke down and bought my own Dell. Wanted that CF slot. More power Scotty!
Does the woman in Best Buy count? The salesman didn't know (at the time) that Pocket Quicken didn't work on PPCs, but I pointed out that Pocket Money did. He was trying to get her to buy a Palm, but I whipped out my EM-500 and showed her what it could do. Personally, I loved that EM-500's screen.
Then the other guy in the cube farm wanted to know what to get his nurse wife to carry her medical databases/texts on. So I sold him my EM-500. And...oh, yeah. I converted my sister from a Palm to a Axim. She wanted wireless connectivity with her hospital network.

And although I work for a large software/IT company, I'm not a consultant. It's just word of mouth to friends and family and any one who is silly enough to say "what's that?"

Cheers,
Pam

I voted slacker, as when folks ask about a PDA, I only push PPC if that's what fits their requirements the best.
If the question was: "How many PDA purchase decisions have you influenced" The answer would be in the 50-100 range. Of those, about 10-15 have been PPC's.

Of course.....another 10 were probably for Helios.

Quite a few folks who have asked about PDA's, I've actually talked OUT of them.....mostly those who don't have any computers at all......I've probably talked more folks out of them than recommended any one model.

The pattern is almost predictable, the person usually buys: A)No PDA B)A low-mid priced Palm OS device C)A med-high end PPC

Very little in between.......and I can't yet in good conscience recommend a $600 palm or PPC device on a newbie.

I'm responsible for recommending the Pocket PC our resellers should buy to sell along with our software. Because of that, my answer is several dozen per month, and growing.

Not very

My dad seems pretty interested with the Toshiba PDAs, courtesey of me, he seems to love that brand name, his laptop is Toshiba, and the TVs would be Toshiba if my mum didn't stop him and told him to get the better Pioneer Elite and Panasonic :D

I think the iPaq 4150 would be good for my dad, he has WiFi where he works and on his laptop too - and in the hotel he stays at while he is on
"business".
