I just got an Axim (used), I'm wondering how to tell if it's PPC 2003? The about screen says 3.0.11171 (build 11178)

Nope, you've got a windows 2002 device? How do I know? I have all of the serial numbers written in crayon all over the ceiling of my room! Actually, I have the same information for my X5. You probably have a device from this spring.

I've played with Windows Mobile for Pocket PC 2003 on an X5, and I like the 2002 version better.

I use the Dell CF wireless card with no problems on a daily basis. I have a friend with a 2003 X5 that also uses the same card with no problems. They seem to be about equal in that respect.

I don't remember how upgrading affects the performance of the device, but I've learned from personal experience that the 2002 OS has some nicer features. A short discussion, which I started, can be found here:

I'd suggest you stay with the 2002 OS. It's not a major upgrade to 2003.
