I know you guys are smart...help me track down the right GPS system for my brother-in-law?

We'd thought to go with a PPC based system, but if that's not possible, feel free to recommend the right product. He works in the oil and gas industry in Wyoming and wants to get from one maintenance site to another quickly.

It needs to be able to:

- input the lat/long of a location and plot a course from "here" to "there". Given the nature of the job, the routes are not not stable and must be computed on the fly

- save those locations (which are NOT normal street addresses) (this is a negotiable requirement) so they can be pulled up faster

I've been reading and reading, but can't seem to figure out the right product.

Thanks in advance.

I think that PocketMap Navigator (http://www.pocketmap.com/navigator.html) will do the trick. As far as I know, it's the only PPC-based vehicle navigation system that supports waypoints. Also, the reviews I've read over at gpspassion.com (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=25) are generally pretty good.

My guess is that you can enter a waypoint at the lat and long of the off-road location you'd like to get to, and then place another waypoint on the nearest road. PocketMap should then automatically route and re-route you to the waypoint on the road.

Mapopolis will also allow you to put in a lat and lon, and use that as a location in the routing feature. You can of course use your current GPs location as the start of your route, and save that location for future use.
