View Full Version : What's your favorite kind of cookie?

There's not really much point to this post, other than the fact that I've been thinking about cookies for about four hours now and thought I'd spread it around a little.

My favorite kind of cookie is good old-fashioned chocolate chip with no nuts.

Coming in at a close second is a delicious batch of home made chocolate chip and candied fruit chunk cookies I had a few Christmases ago.

So...what do you like?

For homemade cookies I have to agree, plain chocolate chip cookies with nothing else in 'em, hot and gooey from the oven......

for bought cookies, I can't think of a better cookie than the Girl Scouts "Caramel deLite". I think they used to call them "Samoas" or something like that. yum yum yum

Slight variation here.....

Chocholate peanut butter chip cookies. From the recipe, half the amount of chocholate chips it calls for, make up the difference with peanut butter chips. (Then throw in a few more chocolate chips to up the chocholate/peanut ratio and just to make sure every single bite is delicious! ;) )

Another variation -- a bakery I know has chocolate cookes with peanut butter chips -- best when still warm and the peanut butter chips are kind of gooey. :D

It's Girl Scout cookie time again around our office, and there's a new kind this year, filled with strawberry jam. I haven't seen any samples yet.

This is not a good thread to be reading in that mid-afternoon time when sugar levels are low.

I'll go for the plain chocolate-chip cookies too. Yum! :D

That said, I've just discovered Pepperidge Farm's new French Vanilla Milanos. They've rapidly ascended in my cookie rankings. If you have the opportunity to check 'em out, do so.

Well, I'm inclined for chocolate chip (I sense a correlation here- Pocket Pc Owners Enjoy Chocolate Chip Cookies (or Chocolate Chip Owners enjoy Pocket Pcs). Anyway, peanut butter comes in a close second.

As for store-bought? Oreos get my vote.

Hmmm... Let me see if I can remember... I usually follow the Tollhouse recipe as my starting point and make some minor changes:

12-oz bag (I think) of chocolate chips. Use the bag that has the recipe where the sugar quantities match this recipe.
2 1/2 c. flour
4 tsp double-acting baking *powder* (not soda)
1/2 tsp salt
2 sticks butter, softened
2 large eggs
3/4 c. granulated sugar
3/4 c. packed brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract (maybe 1.5 tsp... I can't remember without seeing the bag... It's more than what they say on the bag)
1/4-1/2 tsp nutmeg (I like 1/2, but if you're using very fresh, might want less)

* Preheat oven to 375F.
* Place butter in bowl.
* While butter softens just a little more, combine flour (don't bother sifting), baking powder, salt, and nutmeg in small bowl.
* Beat softened butter until smooth.
* Add sugars + vanilla extract, and beat until creamy
* Add one egg at a time, beating thoroughly.
* Beat in flower by thirds. Don't over-beat.
* Mix in chocolate chips with spoon
* Drop globs onto greased cookie sheet (don't use a black or non-stick one... tends to burn the cookies...)
* Bake until golden to your desire (I like them less cooked than my husband, so I tend to make one sheet each way).
* Let cool ON PAN for 5-10 minutes before transfering to cooling rack. This will help prevent fragmentation.

Notes:

* Don't taste straight vanilla extract. It smells good, but it does not taste as good as it smells
* If you use shortening, try to use butter-flavored, or else you lose some of the flavor of the cookie. Also, with shortening, probably replace 4 tsp baking powder with 1 tsp baking soda. I have not used shortening myself, so the receipe has not been tested that way.
* Keep dough cool (doesn't have to be refrigerated, but don't set on stove) while in bowl and when on cookie sheet before putting in the oven. You don't want to give the butter a reason to melt before the baking begins, or you'll get flat wrinkly cookies.

There's a lot of science to butter vs. shortening, actually. Butter has more flavor, but shortening has a higher melting point, which means it's solid while the cookies "set" and therefore you get a "softer" cookie. Since I think butter tastes better, the switch to baking powder and keeping the dough cool helps to offset the butter-melting-too-soon problem.

Homemade M&M cookies are my most favorite. No chocolate chips or anything else, just M&Ms in cookie dough. And only real M&Ms please, no candy coated chocolate nibblets or anything.

I like fully-covered oreos. Back in the states, there were orange-covered oreos during thanksgiving, white-covered oreos during christmas ....

I cannot find those kind of oreos anywhere outside the U.S. I have been spending years and years to look for those fully-covered oreos in this part of the world. A futile attempt. Doh.

Janak : Pepperidge Farm's Ginger Bread is mucho better. he he.

Nothing like a good 'ole batch of White Chocolate Macadamia Nut cookies! My favorite Girl Scout cookies it the Somoas, by far! Store bought is Oreos, but only when dipped in Milk (until soggy)!

I can taste a review coming on...

We all have our favorite kind of cookies, and will often fight over them just as viscously as we do about our Pocket PCs. So this raises a question: is there a perfect cookie? The developers at CookieMill have just finished the first batch, and sent some to me.

Cookie Monster
Because cookies are best when still warm, CookieMill includes a battery-powered Easy-Bake OvenŠ to keep your pastries warm during shipment. I decided splurge and get overnight shipping, since I like my cookies fresh. For those of you who prefer a firmer consistency, CookieMill is also working on Gingersnap and Gingerbread versions, which should be out in Q3 2004.

This is meant to be a family forum, so I'll spare everyone my bawdy interpretation of "cookie" and try, desperately, to get my mind out of the gutter.

Last summer, we had some white chocolate macamadamia* really thin something-or-others (it was a rather non-masculine sounding name iirc) from CostCo or Superstore that were absolutely delicious.

*this is how macadamia is really spelt and pronounced.
