View Full Version : That syncing feeling

Can some of the experts help me get my mind around this syncing business please?

Occasionally I get distracted by AS reporting 'unresolved items'. Right now (1st day after a painful restore) it's just 1 item - somehow the most exasperating. I think I saw a message implicating 'remover.log', but can longer get that. But in attempting to isolate the issue, I've confused myself further. This illustrates what's puzzling me:

Hopefully that's largely self-explanatory. The two main questions I have are:

Is what AS means by 'synchronized' something other than the common sense/intuitive interpretation of 'everything the same'?

Are there some (documented?) 'rules' that cover exceptions etc, that would help explain the above apparent discrepancies?

Sometimes AS asks you about a particular object that it is going to sync. For instance do youwan what is on you ppc to over ride what i on you pc.
IN syncing everthing does NOT have to be the same, it is an option you choose if you want it. Usually that is what most go for.
'Temp1.mbp' is what is on you pc and not showing on your ppc. The others match.

I don't follow that. Synchronizing means automatically keeping everything in the sync folder (and subfolders) the same, on PC and PPC.

From ActiveSync Help (on PC):
"If you have a partnership between your mobile device and desktop computer, you can use synchronization to keep information up-to-date on both computers. If you make a change on one computer, the next time you synchronize, the change is automatically made to the corresponding information on the other computer. "

Obviously I can also copy in either direction manually as I wish (and that's not limited to the sync folder).

BTW, the ChessGenius item is also a PC-only entry. But again, I'm not sure what point you're making here? Is it that you can change the rules about what to do in CONFLICT situations under Options|Rules?

Maybe I'm missing something basic here. In short I don't see why all entries are not identical. If I create a new file right now on my PC, within seconds I see it on my PPC. The only reason I'm currently guessing AS doesn't make both sides the same is because of some rules about special file/folders and shortcuts.

See also my post re Remover.log as the apparent cause of my '1 unresolved item'.

My way of correcting buggy file unresolves is to simply move all My Documents out of the synced folder to a temporary folder on my PC, then deleting all the files from the pocket pc, and the synced folder. Then simply move files (or folders) back a little at a time from the temporary folder back to the synced folder. This seems to work for me, albeit a pain sometimes to do.
