I just got my 38xx upgrade in the mail. Anybody installed theirs yet? Was installation and subsequent re-install of apps smooth?

Summary of H3870 WM2003 upgrade experience :

Upgrade process smooth, no hiccups. MSN client does not work out of the box; had to install updated MSN client.

Good: all my apps worked except of winampaq which had garbled text. Can install Microsoft Voice Command ! Flakey backlight (not turning on) problem seem to have gone away. Got BT connectivity to T68i phone and Socket BT GPS receiver working immediately.

Bad: Response times seem to be about 15-25% slower on everything, especially on launching programs. Bluetooth startup fails most of the time if you want BT to turn on automatically. It requires several attempts including soft reset to get BT turned on.

There are no WM2003 drivers available yet for Symbol CF 802.11 network card. Tried the Socket CF 802.11 driver but it did not work. Symbol support says driver for WM2003 will be out by end of year or ealy next year. So if you have this card and need to continue using 802.11, I would wait to perform this upgrade.

I use an iPaq 3850 unit with an external CF Linksys Wireless 802.11b for my wifi. The Pocket PC 2002 setup was ok, and I also have "maintenance" duty at home for husband's Toshiba e740 unit.

Toshiba is choosing not to upgrade its e740.

I thought HP/Compaq did a good job of offering the 2003 upgrade to its customers and it took about 8 calendar days to get the new release by FedEx.

This weekend I will probably attempt an upgrade for it, although I hope it will run smoothly. Before I run anything, I always read the install guide for about 2 hours and mull things over.

It is a shame that Toshiba does not support its hardware with the same good efforts as HP/Compaq for these handheld PCs!

We have Toshiba notebook Pentium 4 and also 1 Compaq Pentium 4 notebooks plus 2 HP Desktops. The HP folks do an outstanding job of getting software out to their licensed users.

I will keep you folks posted on this forum.

I got my CD and plan on doing my upgrade today - Sat. Before I fire up the CD, I'm going to log all my applications, research whether they work with 2003, find my reg codes, backup, weed out some apps I don't use, pray,... pray some more,.... Should be a busy but hopefully wortwhile day.

Does anyone know if I will have problems with Linksys CF Wi-Fi card/drivers? Stowaway XT keyboard has its drivers out - correct?

Here I go.....

Also a bit annoying to find out MS Reader from the ROM upgrade is the old one (2.2.1). For the new DRM to work on the free ebooks from MS, you need to upgrade to 2.2.2 and use up precious RAM.

Just did the upgrade on my old 3870 (now my dad's Pocket PC). Went very smoothly. Noticed the Bluetooth stack is much improved -- it uses the same stack as the new devices. Performance seems similar to before.

He's fairly simplistic in his needs, though, so I can't judge on application compatibility/etc. -- the only add-on program I installed was Pocket Plus (and I turned off the repeating alarms ;))

I had "issues" with this upgrade. I couldn't get it to work on my main PC and kept getting Error 101 Connection Error during the ROM Upgrade process. I got HP support on the phone and they had me hard reset before proceeding and that didn't help.

Granted, I have a dog of a Windows Me PC, but I was Active Syncing fine and I was connected and synched and it would not "communicate" via USB (or serial) to do the upgrade.

I finally got it to work on a Win98 laptop as a Guest connection.

Then I see I can no longer use my Linksys WCF11 CF Wi-Fi card. This is a major bummer as I will probably have to go buy a WM 2003 compatible Wi-Fi card ASAP if I can't find a way to make that work.

Then there is the problem with the BT shortcut on the bottom of the screen not working.

I also couldn't get the ipaq micro keyboard to work even after getting the most current v 3.04 driver from 10/28/03 which is supposed to support 2003.

Overall, not a very productive day - and I've been at it since early this AM.

It will probably be weeks and $$ before I am where I want to be with this upgrade - I probably should have went for a new 4xxx series!

There are unofficial drivers that work decently. Do a search on this forum or on Brighthand. Here's one example (http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=87551).

I didn't have this problem... I assume you did do a full hard reset after the upgrade?

I did come across the same post and did try that driver. I think I was able to connect but I was not accessing pages in PIE. If anyone knows it works on a 3870 w/ WM2003 I will keep fiddling with it.

Yes, as part of the process I did the hard reset post upgrade. Since I had read some others post about this, it was the first thing I tested while the guy from HP was still on the phone. Still get other times with the message when turning BT on from settings - so it seems more involved.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks I got it working with the driver from your link. I had made a mistake entering my WEP key. I used the passphrase instead of the actual key. DUH! I think I have done that before as well. Live & learn.

So this would be my first WM2003 wireless post.

You are all very lucky,

In australia and NZ we are still waiting for HP to get their act together and make it available :(
