XDA-Developers Take Apart The XDA II

Awesome. I'm glad xda-developers finally got their hands on one of these units. I can't wait to see what hacks they come up with.

It's interesting to note that all of the provider-specific applications live as CABs on a hidden 32MB ROM 'disk-on-chip', and get installed via autorun.exe on hard reset. Like they mention, this would make hard resets take a long time, because everything has to get reinstalled, and I also wonder if that means all of these apps get installed into the 128MB of RAM? It sounds like a good 20-30 MB of your RAM will be taken up by these apps right out of the box.

I noticed that after Hard resetting the device prompts me for localizing settings; I will have to select one of the service providers listed so it will configure all the GSM, MMS & GPRS settings and then it will install some other features, I’ve checked the file system I noticed it took only 2.3 MB of RAM.

On a clean O2 XDA II, with nothing running and only those CAB files loaded, the memory take up (storage wise) is approx 8 Meg (out of 126 MB available). I would suspect that a lot of those CAB files are for corporate use...

Its always interesting to see what the XDA-Developers come up with. I hope they figure out the pertinent secrets (i.e. sim unlocking) easily, but doubt it. HTC has learned from the XDA what to secure. In any event, it'll be interesting to follow.

This group really is great they have helped me with some coding projects from their forums and have always been really interesting. Helpful also if your trying to make your phone even better.
