Good evening all,

I have an Ipaq 3765 that I purchased about 18 months ago. It was during the transition from pocket PC to pocket PC 2002. I was given a free ROM upgrade by web I beleive.

I recently had to send the unit back to Compaq (HP) to have the motherboard replaced. They sent it back with the original version of Pocket PC. I called them back and they said that because they are moving to PPC 2003, they no longer have the software for PPC 2002. So now I have a unit that is stuck with the old version of PPC.

Does anyone know if there is a way for me to upgrade my rom to PPC 2002?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Chris

Wait a second. Are you sure it's a 3765 and not a 3670(5)? If it's the former, that device came with Pocket PC 2002. You should be able to demand that they put back the OS that it came with.

If it's the latter (a 3670), try eBay.

Ahh, its always good to have someone knowledgeable in this area

I think that HP/Compaq customer service is excellent, so if you find out that Janek is right, I would hope they fix it.

It's definately a 3765. it did not come with 2002, however. It was one of the first 3765's produced and at the time 2002 was not ready yet so they shipped it with PPC 2000. When I registered they allowed me to do the upgrade.

I explained this to compaq, but they did not seem to understand. They pointed me to their software site, but none of the updates actually upgrade from 00 to 02. They said if i wanted they could send it back and they would see what they can do considering that have now switched over to 2003, but the 3765 will not support 2003.

How frustrating. You would think that if you send them a unit for repair it would come back with the same operating system

Uh-oh. This is a problem. You have, in essence, a prerelease 3765 (whether or not it actually is). I wouldn't be surprised if the internal P/N of the board is the same as the 3670's, and that's why the ROM may have gotten messed up.

I take it you didn't keep a copy of the ROM update. Finding a senior level tech person who would know nowadays, after the merger, about the existence of such an update may be difficult. I'd consider writing a letter to executive people at HP, but I'm not sure how far you'll get. Honestly, I think your best bet is to argue for another new 3765 mainboard that has the proper OS.

If none of the above works, you might want to contact a third-party like Pocket PC Techs (www.ppctechs.com) and see if they can do something for you.

Like I said, there may be a reason your unit got mixed up with 36xx devices. But yes, it sucks. :(

Although they replaced the motherboard, I think they replaced it with an old one as you suggest, perhaps a 36xx series. My ROM version is 1.87.

It's been so long since I bought the ipaq, I forget the specifications of the 3765. Does anyone remember if it had 32 or 64 meg RAM? I thought is was 64, but maybe I am wrong. I only use it for my NAVMAN GPS system in my car, but I used to be able to keep a set of maps in the PPC memory and another set on the Compact Flash card. Now there is only room enough on the PPC memory for Hawaii, because I am only showing 32 megs of memory. I thought I had 64. THis whole thing is just frustrating. I'll have to call technical support back and see what can happen.

I just called HP technical support yet agaiin and finally taked to someone who knew what was going on. We dug through the asset viewer. I only have 32 MB ram and 16MB rom. I should have 64 and 32. My System model number is listed as Ipaq 3600.

The morons installed the wrong motherboard when they repaired the unit the SECOND time. Now I have to send it back again for the THIRD time to have them install the correct motherboard. Auugh!

Sorry to hear it. At least they figured it out. I had a bad experience with repairing my 3870 too; I had to send it back three times before they actually fixed it properly... although the turnaround time for each attempt was fairly quick.
