View Full Version : How Did The MSN Messenger Upgrade Go On Your Pocket PC?

As most of you know that use MSN Messenger, Microsoft had a forced upgrade a few days ago to get everyone on a minimum client level to support new security features. On October 7, Microsoft released two MSN Messenger updates for their handhelds, one for Pocket PC 2002 and one for Pocket PC 2003 devices. If you haven't upgraded yet, you should head over to the Windows Mobile site and get the upgrade that is right for your device.

Since this update was released, I've seen some reports of problems in a few cases and I'd like to see how wide spread it is and if we can find some commonality in those that aren't able to log in after the upgrade has been completed. For those with problems, please reply in this thread with your device type, the version of Pocket PC you have (2002 or 2003) and what the problem was. I am assuming that you verified you downloaded the correct update and did a soft reset after the install was complete.

I downloaded and installed the required upgrade and it all went smootly  No problems whatsoever... MSN messenger runs and works exactly how it used to before the upgrade except without the annoying upgrade messages.

So for all those who run the same device:
Toshiba e310 with MSN messenger in ROM and the upgrade in RAM
I connect to the internet using my mobile GPRS service...

What kind of problems are people having out of interest? I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't a few bugs being microsoft and all...

I upgraded my e200 and it went smoothly. I even donned my cowboy hat and didn't soft reset the machine.

I can't get messenger to connect over GPRS via T-Mobile on two different devices (PPCPE 2003 & PPC 2003 w/ bluetooth) but have no problem via wifi or pass-thru.

I'm assuming my issue is with T-Mobile, not the upgrade.

I get an error everytime I try to upgrade.

"Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product MSN Messenger Update for Windows Mobile 203 based Pocket PC's. The Windows Installer cannot continue."

Anyone else get this same error?

I get on with T-Mobile with no problems. I do have their VPN account though. I don't use MSN with VPN but I understand their VPN enabled account (internet3.voicestream.com) has more capacity than the non-VPN enabled account, so that may be the issue.

The file is 5Mb from Microsoft. How much RAM does it take up on the device? Man, first the Reader update that uses my precious RAM and now this.

The file is 5Mb from Microsoft. How much RAM does it take up on the device?227Kb...

It's incredible... I'm wondering where the rest 4773Kb went!?

But I'm STILL waiting for the upgrade for my MS SmartPhone, I've installed Agile Messenger and it works, but it's just not as good as the original

I installed it in an Axim X5 with 2002 without a problem. THen I upgraded the Axim to 2003 and installed the 2003 update - again, without a problem.

Hello,

Well, I have a PPC 2002 device and, after the install, I am experiencing some very strange problems. :(

The install itself went well. MSN Messenger continues to work fine.

HOWEVER, suddenly my IMAP email connections don't work! POP3 and Activesync work fine against the same email account. However, *suddenly*, using IMAP will freeze the PPC and only a reboot will restore it to useful functionality. Before the install, IMAP worked smoothly.

I am using: Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX 600 (upgraded to the latest ROM/firmware patches) with PPC 2002.

I use AIM and never talk on messenger so now that is will never work on my device not a problem. I will update messenger after Microsoft pries AIM from my cold dead hands.

I've tried all 3 access points that I know of (internet2.voicestream.com, internet3.voicestream.com and wap.voicestream.com), no dice. My account is the VPN enabled account as well. It's kinda annoyong. :)

Very odd. I'm using internet2.voicestream.com and I'm not that far away from you (I don't think). My upgraded 2003 Axim works fine.

So there seem to be two separate problems: one with the installer and one with the upgraded app being unable to log on. Those of you with the problem with logging on, when did you do the upgrade, and if it was prior to 10/15, were you able to log on then with the upgraded version?

I can't logon at all since the upgrade, even before Oct. 15. Keeps telling me incorrect user/password, although they are fine from the desktop.

following on from my previous post (above) ive upgrade my 3970 to Pocket 2003, and upgrade the messenger by following the Microsoft web site, the install went ok and all seemed well, however, i now get the message " Logon to MSN Messenger servcie failed becasue the service is not responding, please try later" i get this every time i try to connect. Ive re-installed and soft reset, no joy. Does anybody else have the same problem?? fyi, i upgrade via Bluetooth which i though might have caused a problem, i havent done it via the cradle yet, could that be the problem???

HELP ME :( PLEASE

Don't hold your breath, I got the same response 2 weeks ago and haven't heard anymore from them since.

I have also tried to logon to the same hotmail account that I use for Messenger through the browser. It does not work for me, it gives me basically the same response as using the Messenger client. I wonder if anybody else is having the same response. I am using Bluetooth through a T68i on TMobile - for reference.

Gentlemen...and ladies I hope. All of the Ipaq h5555 or 3900 series users who are running PPC2003 seem to be having the same problem. As soon as one of us gets it working or speaks to the FOOLS at HP or Microsoft we shall post it here.

How many with problems are connecting via the cradle? Apparently something in Messenger changed and you have to add the Pocket PC's IP address as part of Norton's home network section.

Of course, you could always just uninstall Norton and get a far less troublesome utility suite...

MSN Messenger tells me my password or username is wrong no matter if I try from the cradle or WiFi.

Hi again,

Just to clarify, the "Incorrect Password User Name" problem on my e750 occurs whether I connect through Wi-Fi, through the cradle, or through the infra-red port, using my cell phone to log on.

Also, I just bought a new e750 from Future shop last night.

I tried it... Same problem.

Needless to say, I am not impressed.

If anyone hears from Microsoft, please post it here!

Thanks,

Mike

Okay, this has been a little project of mine for a few weeks now to figure this out. Yes, this is my hobby. :-D

So, as the subject says I got it to work and I thought I would share with others how I did it.

I have had the same problems as the others that have posted in the forum. I could not get MSN Messenger to connect after the upgrade using TMobile. I was able to connect just fine while the device was in the craddle but that did not seem mobile enough for me. :-)

First my configuration:
- IPAQ 1945
- SE t68i

I use this all the time to get email and browse the web through tmobile and it works GREAT!!!

So now the solution that I would like to have someone else verify that it solves the problem for them as well. The normal dial string that I use to connect from by PPC to the t68i is "*99***1#" (minus the quotes of course) and the key is the "1" which tell the phone to use the "T-Zones" setting to connect to the Internet. Now, what I did was change the "1" to a "2" (*99***2#) and use the "T-Mobile Internet" configuration instead. I then connected to the Internet and as able to logon to MSN Messenger. I was also able to logon with my iMov client for Jabber as well since it was giving me the same behavior of not being able to login and start a session.

I would appreciate it if someone else would verify that this is not a fluke and tell me that this change made a difference for them as well.

Thanks

Michael

HELP!!! I am getting the same problem as some of you. After installing the msn messenger update, I can't log on anymore. It say my username and password may be incorrect, try again later. I've tried uninstalling it and then installing it via the cradle and WiFi. I've even installed ActiveSync 3.7.1 to make sure. Still, no luck!!!

Using: Toshiba e740, Pocket PC 2002

Please help, thanks :) ,
