I was wondering if there is such a thing as a bluetooth earbud. After seeing Bluespoon I got excited and thought I might be able to double it as a headset for my phone and also use it for listening to Mp3 files on my iPaq.

But on their website they show that Bluespoon only works with phones. There's no mention of Pocket PCs. Or am I wrong. I wasn't able to find a way to contact Bluespoon from their website.

You can hack in the headset profile into the Pocket PC. The quality however, is terrible for listening to MP3 music with. I would not recommend it.

I don't liisten to music. I only liisten to audio books, mp3s I make myself that playback using a synthetic voice and web news like the BBC. Would it work good enough for things like that?

Also, just how good is bluespoon as a phone headset?

Also, if I were to hack it, is there somewhere that I can get a step by step help instructions?

Thanks for the info.

Have you tried the geekzone ('www.geekzone.co.nz') bluetooth guides? They are a good source of BT step by step guides....

Would you know where to get the hack or how to do it JonnoB?

You have to download a registry hack and then find the registry and change a value to one - maybe do search.

mmm, are you sure you want to do that to your ppc???

cyj - You don't specify what device you want to connect using BT with? If it's got BT manager on there, hacking the reg might not be neccessary? It should discover it whilst performing a search if the headset is in 'connect' status; subsequently forming a connection is as easy as pressing the 'accept call' button on the headset.

I use mine for GPS instructions, and switch to 'calls' as required - the BT connection from my iPaq is treated as a 'call' by the BT headset, so all I have to do is 'hang up' the iPaq BT connection and the phone then comes through as a new call... simplicity itself.

As J mentions though, quality for music is far from good - acceptable if there is no alternative, but no better than that.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to put a Bluetooth CF card in the HP Jornada 928 and use a Bluespoon or other Blueooth headset for the handsfree?

Any thoughts more thann welcome.

Actually, almost definitely not. Pocket PC Phones don't generally reroute the audio over the CF slot, so a CF Bluetooth card is not privy to the phone's operation.

Sorry. :( Your best bet is to get the XDA II when it becomes available in your area, as it does support the Handsfree profile.

DrtyBlvd - Sorry, I'm getting back to you a bit late here. But my device is an iPaq 5555 and it has the BT Manager. It would be great if it connected without needing a hack. Then it would be goodbye to tangled headset cords!

cyj -

NP! You should have no worries with connecting the two then :D - just make sure the headset is in 'discover' mode, turn BT on the Paq on, go to BT Manager, last thing on the list is 'Headset' - follow the prompt and it should magically appear... IF there is a code required it will say as much on the manual - I have an SE HBH 60; works like a charm everytime. I find the quality quite good, up to about 5-6m but it tails off any further than that. Mind you, that's actually a fair way to be from the Paq or the phone for that matter, at least the way I use the combination anyway!

Go forth and shop :D

DrtyBlvd,

What kind of Headset do you have? I have an SE HBH-35 on its way and I'd like to be able to listen to talk radio shows on my PPC with my headset but also be able to answer calls from my T610 without having to do anything other than push a button or two. How exactly did you set it up? Can you pair both the phone and PPC with the headset at the same time? What if both units want to send data at the same time?

Can you explain in more detail please?

Thanks,
Robb

Hi Robb -

Sure -

I've an HBH60; and an SE610 phone.

So the phone has been 'paired' with the headset, and everytime you turn the headset on it 'finds' the phone and works as you'd expect it to.

With the Paq, the headset has also been 'paired', using the 'Discover headset' option in BT manager; so there is a shortcut to it in the BT Manager screen.

To use it with the Paq, one just 'connects' using the shortcut, the headset 'rings' as it does when a call from the phone comes through, you answer it by pressing the headset button and volia, you have sound from the Paq - screen clicks, sounds, whatever - IE GPS instructions for me.

If the phone rings, and you have the headset connected to the Paq, you must press the headset button to 'drop' the iPaq "call", and then press it again to initiate connection to the phone; the headset rings and away you go answering the call again as normal.

To then 'go back to' the Paq, you have to initiate the "call" from the Paq using the BT manager again; then as above.

It isn't a perfect solution - the aspect of swapping and 're-initialising' is a minor chore, but it's easily done and I don't find it too onerous given the resultant benefits...

So, specifically;

Yes you can pair the headset with the phone and the iPaq;
No you can't have two connections live at the same time

I'm happy to hear about your success with the headset, but mine doesn't work. I can pair it, and then there is a minor noise on the headset speaker, but if I play sounds or whatever, there is no sound on the headset, everything just goes over the normal speaker. I wanted to use this for PocketBone, a VoiceOverIP solution for Pocket PC, which would be very cool. I have the Jabra BT200 headset, which works fine with my phone.
Any hints on your system (2002/2003, BT version, ...)?
Thanks,

Stefan

DrtyBlvd,

OK, I got my HBH-35 and tried to pair it to my h2215 and T610. It did pair to both but I can't get sound from my h2215. Could you please post in excruciatingly fine detail how you got yours to work? Step by step please.

Thanks,
Robb Bates

One more time. I downloaded the Bluetooth Headset patch from Handango for $3 and that enabled audio via my headset. I was hoping it would do something different than the freeware h5450 bluetooth headset patch, but it didn't. So $3 out the window.

I do get audio, but it's really, really bad. I was expecting lower quality, but it's full of static and my PPC bogs down when I play music. It also plays back slower than normal. I'm hoping there is a registry hack or some other setting that will fix this. It doesn't seem normal.

Any ideas?

DtryBlvd, is your quality really poor via your headset?

Robb

hey guys! I have had a bluespoon for some time now and love it. The new digital model has the ability to pair with THREE other devices (the only headset I've seen with this). So yes you can use it with your phone and your ipaq and if you are like me your desktop for VoIP. They are expensive though, so be warned.

As for the Ipaq 5450 with a BT headset don't bother the sound sucks! I did the registry hack and never used it twice. Now I have a 4350 coming and it says it has BT Headset profile, about time!! I am looking to bring in the Digital and the Chameleon from Bluespoon but haven't seen the demand for such an expensive headset. If anyone would buy it (and support PPC Thoughts at the same time) then please email me at [email protected] and I will judge the response.

Robb, Seidler -

Sorry, some confusion here arising due to different models of iPaq - My posts refer to cyj's, and relate to an iPaq 55 series, no other

FWIW, quality is pefect for voice, medium to poor for music.
