My WiFi network consists of a notebook, a desktop, and a PPC. I have the WEP set up but haven't changed the SSID or MAC settings. I guess I really don't understand these things well. I would like to improve my security by changing these settings. Question: Is there an FAQ or source of info on why/how to make these changes other than trying to plow through manuals? Or maybe it's just a matter of a click or two?

Thanks in advance!

for some good tips or post back here if you have questions.

But to answer your questions, think of the SSID as the name of your wireless network - this you should definitely change to something else. Most, if not all wireless access points, have the option of disabling the broadcasting of the SSID. The benefit of not broadcasting the SSID is that it's not out there for all to see.

Secondly, WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy, encrypts the connection between wireless client (your PC, PPC etc) and the Access Point (AP). So even if someone knows your SSID, they would still need the WEP key to connect. So if someone were to "sniff" the airwaves, your data would look like garbled text.

Many access points allow the option of restriction of MAC (media access control) addresses to either exclusion or inclusion. Every network interface card (wired and wireless) has a MAC (or hardware) address that is unique to the card itself. Using these MAC address, and the ability to exclude or include them, gives you another option for securing your wireless network.

One note though, these methods should not be considered the end all, be all to securing your wireless network. A dedicated person can get around these measures with the right equipment and time. These steps can, however, prevent the casual user from accessing your wireless network.

Sorry if this is redundant for you. HTH.
