From Cnet talking about both the 4150 and 4350 screens:
"As noted, the transflective screen is the same one found on the H1940. Made by Sony, it's among the best available."
Hmmmm? There's way too many forums on every ppc website talking about the 1940 screen to want to make a comment like that! (whether its truly a big deal or not - the controversy makes it a big deal in a marketing sense...)

which is best the x3 or the 4100? Does the ipaq have nevo built in, and does the x3 have a remote as well. Either way, i might take back my clie and buy a x3.

One thing I'm wondering about:
Where's the wifi antenna?
With my 5550, if it's sitting on the other side of my PC from the AP (~30 feet), it keeps dropping the connection but if I use my Orinoco Gold for wifi, there're no problems; if I use the naked iPaq elsewhere there are also no problems.
Unless the antenna is wrapped around the screen or something, these units are going to have very poor reception.

Wow, these are good prices. If only the 4150 had 128MB, they'd have a sell. Gotta hold out for the 5555. Think the price will come down on the 5555 now?

*sigh* I wish it would take CF, I like this device though. But, how about those guys at Pocket PC Italia? They projected this awhile back (although I thought it was going to be like the one we all saw in the "Top Secret" video). I don't wanna dig through the archives to find the link to the original Pocket PC Italia rumor, but I know someone will (I'm looking at you Janek). :D

Do you think that my old h1910 aluminum proporta case can be used on the h4100? The h4100 is a good upgrade over my h1910! :D

Yes I agree. These days memory is getting very cheap, and it would be great if this unit had a CF Card Slot.
Regardless, my money is waiting to be spent...(Hint, Hint)

Cnet ratings are quite high for those new iPAQs!!! Personally I like the H4350 it looks really great. Hmm! I predict that HP will release a higher-end / updated model of the H43xx series with higher built-in memory; probably another version with sliding keyboard! It would be highly appreciated. Overall I admire HP to continuously innovate and produce varieties of products for different market segment. Now they have to add up a Phone Edition device to their wonderful collection of Pocket PCs. Well done HP.

SD isn't sufficient to be a reasonable subsitutable technology, traditionally SD-only devices were slim 'introductory' devices. Not having CF isn't a single matter of not having CF. Single expansion devices restrict some expansion, especially when you're restricted to SD. Dual functioning SD devices are still having first-stage quality issues.

Provided they don't want to buy cheaper CF memory. And they don't have a CF GPS card. And they don't want a CF modem. And they don't have a CF digital camera that they want to grab photos directly from. Etc.
Customers starting from a clean slate? Sure. Customers that already have a technology investment in CF, either through previous PDAs or other devices? CF can still be a requirement.
This isn't even considering the consumers that want an I/O device AND a memory card...

Your "average" consumer doesn't use a PDA to slap on CF modems and CF cameras. They use their PDAs for PIM functionality and maybe to listen to some MP3's on an SD card. The only people that care about the CF are the foaming at the mouth hardcore users who make up a SMALL portion of the entire PDA market.
I mean, who wants to use a crappy CF camera with digital zoom? I'd take my 3.2MP Canon A70 over any of the CompacFlash cameras running around.

To some extent, I agree with you. But I also think the definition of "average" is changing as more and more people become technology users.
As for camera - I meant a *regular* stand-alone digital camera that uses CF, like my Canon A20. I have taken that CF card directly out of the camera and put it into the PDA to view the pics on a slightly bigger and better screen.

You are irrationally secularizing markets. On lower priced PDA's the large number of buyers are those who do not invest into PDA accessories; however, this PDA costs more and typically attracts business buyers or those who invest heavily into PDA's. A large number of buyers are basic buyers, but they buy the lower end PDA's. These new PDA's have dual wireless, so why would a large number of average PDA buyers who use it for PIM and maybe music would buy this PDA?

And I'll take my Sigma SD9 over your canon A70 running and jumping around :D The CF camera and your A70 are designed for different occasions, the CF cameras are for those immediate occasions, when you are need to take pictures, but you didnt bring your camera.

CF slot is a must, until SD peripherals are getting common and cheaper. But HP will be looking at all the evidence that this just isn't so.
Q. What is the most popular PPC range?
A. The iPAQ
Q. Which PPC range never had inbuilt CF until within the last year?
A. The iPAQ
In the eyes of the marketing suits this will translate as - 'Customers don't want CF slots'.

I'm confused though about the arguement, the iPAQ line didn't have CF built-in because it wanted to preserve the sleeves, the 19xx is a slim introduction model and naturally can't include CF, but the 2215 is the middle line. Not having CF until now is a grandfather clause of the sleeves, not because iPAQ wasn't pro-CF (there was a time that was all they had).

HP make enough different models to satisfy anyone but if you have a CF Camera why dont you invest in CF to SD adapter?? Personally I have memory stick, which no PPC manufacturer supports so count yourself lucky!
And for those techno peeps out there, myself included, who require connect to modems etc praise the lord for bluetooth technology. Yes we may have to upgrade our kit but thats what gives us pleasure anyway....
Has anyone seen any pictures of the backlit keyboard yet?

If you want/need a CF slot, get the 2200 line. Not every model will appeal to everyone, and you can't possibly please everyone with a single device. Different strokes for different folks.
This device looks really nice. I'm thinking this will be my 3650's replacement. Until the rumoured GPRS device comes out next year
I would love to see a side-by-side picture of the 2 new ipaqs. Maybe even an older device in the picture too. Anyone have a review unit kicking around?? :D

To follow up on my previous post. Let's say for instance, that I go on a business trip. The hotel I am in doesn't have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Side-Wi, Tri-Wi, whatever. And if they did, I am sure it would be at an additional cost to me. But gee, they have a phone line in the room. Gosh darn it, my PDA only has an SD slot. Dang, an SD modem doesn't exist. Guess I can't log in an get my email.
Wait, I know what I can do. Let me listen to some music and check my calendar on MY $600 PDA WHICH I CAN'T GET MY EMAIL ON BECAUSE IT DOESN'T HAVE A CF SLOT!!!!!!!!!
But seriously folks, I completely disagree with the previous comment that the average consumer only needs an SD slot. There are far more available accessories on CF than on SD.
If you want to use your PDA for music and to check your calendar, there are much cheaper alternatives out there. For $600, I expect a CF slot. End of story. Money was ready in anticipation of the new HP series. Will wait for the new Toshiba E805. At least it has CF and probably for the same money.

Actually, this translates into we will give the customer what we want. Besides since the majority of accessories are in CF format, let's leave that out of the PDA so they can buy a nice extra expensive sleeve for it. Yeah baby, more money for HP.

This is an interesting thread so I think I'll jump in with a couple of points. I read where someone says HP doesn't get it because they left out CF. I disagree. HP doesn't get it because of the price. The "average" (term that is being thrown around) consumer is not going to pay that much money for a PDA. Plain and simple. At that price, it better get adopted by the enterprise market or it will forever be a niche product.
I don't want CF in my PDA for one reason - size! I'm surprised no one has acknowledged that in this thread (or maybe I missed it). One of the reasons I've regrettted purchasing my Axim is the size of it. And now that I've purchased a couple of SD cards, I never use my CF slot. Thought about getting a wireless card, but I never did. I just think many more people will be willing to forego CF for smaller size and SD (as long as there is built-in wireless). I know we don't like to appear shallow by admitting that looks matter, but when you compare your PPC to your neighbors Palm, aren't you a little envious by their form-factor? I want my machine to do it all AND look sleek. That means no CF.
I still think BOTH of these machines are to pricey to find mainstream adoption. HP better hope IT budgets start to rise in 2004.

Sorry guys, all this bitchin' and moaning about CF card is getting out of hand. First of all, if you need CF and SD slot - get yourself a 2200! Second, let's face it, technology needs to move on and there need to be a point in time where the new and upcoming standards need to be set. As for the 4000 series, it's got two major wireless protocols built in which leaves the SD slot available for other things like storage. I can't wait to replace my 1910 (which replaced my Jornada 568) with a slim, trim, 4100 series. I am also gonna get myself a BT GPS unit for my car. Exciting times indeed! :)
Yeah, I know some of you guys need CF modems and such. If they are not available in SD form factor then either you need to wait, get yourself a 2200 (or other slim device - ie. the new Asus has CF - I think), or connect via a BT phone for your email retrieval needs.
Just my .02
Cheers!

I would love to get a 2215 and stop complaining. However, the HP marketing machine strikes again. NO WI-FI. I don't know about you, but I don't have a single piece of equipment that runs Bluetooth. So, if I get a 2215, I would need to buy a CF Wi-fi. Great, another peripheral to carry around with me.

That's right. I'm sorry, it's HP's fault for not making a single device that has 100% of the features YOU want. I don't think I should ever buy HP again.

The truth is that hp makes ppc's for just about every user there could be. The 19xx series is good for beginners to some advanced users. I believe this because it also has the built in blue tooth, so if you are interested in net access you can have it as well. Think about it, you are getting a low cost ppc and you are getting wireless access with it as well. YOu arent going to get the goodies in the 4100 in the 1900. If you need to have net access in a different manner then you can use the sd adapter that allows you to use a cf card. It may take up a little more room, but you arent walking every where you go on the net constantly. For one a battery issue, and two a cost issue for paying for the net access. YOu can everything you need without having to have a built in cf slot in my thinking.
The 22xx series is a step up and that is because of the built in slot and faster processor. It is a matter of what your needs are. If it is true that at some point in time the cf card will disappear from devices, then the best we can do is adapt to the situation. Just because there is still a demand for cf doesnt mean it should be neither had to be in every singel pda hp puts out.
The 4355 with the keyboard is a good choice, of course if all the ipaq's have the option of attaching a keyboard, then the main advantage would be that this one is built in, and then of course the wireless access. The consideration here would be comparing cost, to size, and convenience. Here again, these are opinions and hp is meeting the needs of different markets.
If the 4100 only needs the keyboard attached to compare to the 4300, then what would you choose to do?
I am personally more interested in more ram and a quicker processor than I am a cf card. This is because obviously the majority of the time that is what determines the performance of my ppc:)

I think people have a right to complain about no CF card. People have a right to complain about whatever they want. They are expressing their opinions - isn't that what this forum is about?
I'd prefer to have the CF card, as well. It's about convenience for me. I don't think the size is prohibitive. If I wanted a diminutive entry-level device I would certainly go with a 19xx. I have thought about getting a 22xx as well because of the dual slots. But I want built-in WiFi so that's not an option for me. The 4350 adds the keyboard I have always wanted but takes away my convenient CF slot. There's great value in having TWO slots in a device. It gives you FLEXIBILITY and allows you to use multiple peripherals, be it memory, modems, GPS cards, card scanners, etc. As a power user with varied needs I want my PDA to EMPOWER me, not CONSTRAIN me.
Just to illustrate my point - I am starting a home-based computer support business. One of my long term goals is to have a credit card scanner attached to my PDA along with wireless access (most likely via bluetooth to my upcoming Smartphone) so I can accept credit cards for payment while at a client's location. It's a convenience for me AND my customers that would not be possible with an SD-only device. Of course this isn't what a "typical" consumer would need, but I don't think the "typical" consumer is in the market for $400+ PDAs.
I'm not up in arms about this whole issue, it just means I'll wait a bit longer until I replace my e740.
Gosh darn it, my PDA only has an SD slot. Dang, an SD modem doesn't exist. Guess I can't log in an get my email.

First off, MSRP is $450 and not 600 - a significant difference. Second, the device sports Bluetooth - so your complaint about lack of CF and modem lands flat. Get a mobile phone that supports BT and you're in business. You can get online anywhere using this setup - you're SOL with landline modem in the middle of a field trip. Or in the suburbs where there's also no WiFi hotspots.
I for one am glad they didn't put CF in, thus making the device smaller.

Unfortunately this isn't true. GSM has rotten coverage in some areas of the US, and the CDMA carriers (Verizon, Sprint) haven't yet released a bluetooth phone (or even hinted that they will in the near future). I live in one of those "no GSM" dead spots so I'm out of luck with bluetooth phones as a solution. It's not quite the panacea you claim. :?

For me, that's not the best solution since I only want to use a modem 3 months out of the year and always from hotels.
(rest of response made to the thread in general, not to the quoted user)
While it's true that not everybody sees a need for CF, it's also true that not everybody wants to go without it. Yes, there are a couple PDAs that have CF already out there. But a lot of people would like to see more. I'm not sure what's wrong about wishing for it. If someone says "Boy, I wish this device had higher resolution", are they going to be yelled at to go buy a Clie? ;)
It's one thing to point out why you think this device doesn't need CF (size reasons, iPaqs traditionally don't, etc), but I hardly think it's necessary to jump down peoples' throats for wishing it had the slot. It almost seems like some people here are worried this design will be "ruined" if HP hears the "we want CF" people. Somehow I don't think they'll change it now... :)

Good grief! Calm down, will you?
I'll tell you what I'd like to have in a PPC with current possibilities:
1. 128M RAM minimum
2. 64M ROM minimum
3. SDIO slot
4. CF slot
5. wifi
6. Bluetooth
7. 4" screen
8. 10 hours + battery life, and removable batteries.
9. Native landscape / portrait swapping
10. A backup battery, as in my old Jornada and my Casio E-11
11. Consumer IR
12. The sort of tough security provided in the Ipaq 5555. Doesn't need to be a biometric scanner, but it needs to be as hard to crack.
13. All in a package as close to an Ipaq 1910 as possible.
Why?
1. As much future proofing as possible. I'm still using a Jornada 430. I'm looking for my next PDA now. But I don't wish to change my next PDA much faster. It costs too much for me.
2. I have a Pentax Optio 430RS camera, which uses CF memory. I would like to be able to view and even send photos from this camera while I'm away from base.
3. SDIO technology is coming on fast, but there are still many peripherals that need the room available in a CF card, like the modem example given earlier
4. I'm often away from the office. The more connectivity options I have, the better - I don't know what will be available on (or close to) site, if I need to access the office or the factory by PC. Or if I want to connect to the customer's system.
5. I use Excel a lot. The larger screen may not actually make any difference to my viewable area, but if it will, then that's a good thing.
6. Huge battery life, because I'm away from mains power more often than I'd like. The backup battery because many of my collegues with Ipaqs are screaming mad that they keep losing their data, even having adjusted the battery control software.
7. Easy landscape setting is mainly for excel use, but would be good for other stuff, too.
8. The CIR is mostly for fun, but also has work possibilities.
9. The hard security, for obvious reasons. :)
10. As small and slim as possible, so that I take the damn thing with me! I was never without my palm V, but my Casio & my Jornada often get left behind. And sure as hell, I'll want it almost every time I don't take it with me.
I don't care who gives me this wonder PPC. I agree that the OEM's, and HP in particular are doing great things with the expansion of their product ranges, but I see no reason why I shouldn't ask them to produce a PPC that's ideal for me. Why? Because I suspect that a lot of us would like to have the specifications I've outlined.
Maybe one of the players will give us the 'holy grail' PPC soon. I certainly hope so. But no doubt we'll then want even more, with whatever new devices, protocols, and so-on are available then!

It's not quite the panacea you claim. :?
Perhaps in US it isn't. In Europe, it certainly is.

Definitely a sore spot for me! Damn carrier-driven US wireless marketplace!

Lets re-discuss this issue 12 months from now. :D
Dell axim only has 1 model, and it already has quite a marketshare in PPC's market ... in 12 months, the PPC market will be dominated by Dell, just like the desktop, laptop and server market. Resistance is futile.
And by that time, we shall discuss again about the percentage of PPC sold with CF slot vs. without CF slot.

I would love to get a 2215 and stop complaining. However, the HP marketing machine strikes again. NO WI-FI. I don't know about you, but I don't have a single piece of equipment that runs Bluetooth. So, if I get a 2215, I would need to buy a CF Wi-fi. Great, another peripheral to carry around with me.But if you're willing to carry around a bulky CF land-line modem, carrying around a CF or SDIO Wi-Fi card should be the least of your concerns.

At that price, it better get adopted by the enterprise market or it will forever be a niche product.I agree, but remember that HP actually is doing a very good job of offering lower-end PDAs these days. So, I don't see anything wrong with them creating some high-end PDAs that will cater to business users and geeks. Better that than to not offer them at all. If you're suggesting that they should offer these new PDAs for $250, well I think that's unrealistic. That said, I do think they're overpricing these. I think they should be about $50-75 cheaper, and lower some of their other models a bit as well.

I had some NDA information that I wasn't allowed to release until the 15th, but it seems HP didn't want to respect their own deadlines.
Jason, anything else to add from your NDA info, now that it's the 15th?
