Hi Everyone!

Based in the UK, what would my options be for a really basic PPC which includes both CF and SD slots? Is there anything cheaper than the Toshiba e740 - on Expansys at the mo for £249+VAT?

Background (if you're interested) is that I want to build a navigation PPC for use:

In a car - i.e. 'routed' navigation with voice
In a city - i.e. street level 'where-am-i?' on-foot navigation
Walking out in the countryside - i.e. Fugawi and the OS Landranger maps

I don't really need the PPC for anything much else, so a basic model will do I think. Need the CF slot for a GPS card and the SD for memory to hold the maps.

Let me know if any of this sounds silly!

Thanks,

Dave

Dell X5 should be cheaper than e740.

Dell X5 should be cheaper than e740.
A lot cheaper - £139 + VAT (http://commerce.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config/frameset.asp?c=664&n=4267&b=44092&m=gbp&cu=uktra&l=en&s=uktra&store=uktra&sbc=ukdhsaxim5&v=d)

Excellent! While we're on the subject - does anyone know of a better price on a CF GPS than the Pretec CompactGPS - £116.66 + VAT @ Expansys?

Thanks,

Dave

Treefrog,

If all you want to do is navigation, a dedicated GPS device will probably do you better.

Like this - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000066TPN/qid=1065967297/br=2-5/ref=br_ts_slwth_th_5/103-3803700-4667051?v=glance&s=electronics&n=559938

If you want to use some of the other PPC features, then by all means, go that route, but don't buy a multifunction device to just do one function.

Another vote for the Dell Axim X5! I'm using mine right now to post this.

Sorry - no ideas on CF GPS.

There are a bunch of different options for a CF GPS. The thing to look for is the SiRF Star II/LP chipset - this is the newest and most accurate chipset, and uses the least amount of power.

As you're in the UK, the site to check out would be www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk (http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk). The best bang for your pound ( ) is the Haicom card (http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/viewprod.php?product_id=161&category_id=14). It's fairly low profile, has the correct chipset, and doesn't block the headphone jack of the Axim.

As far as software goes, I'd go with Mapopolis (http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/view_software.php?accessory_id=765).

Good luck!

P.S.: If you want to geocache (http://www.geocaching.com/), you might want to pick up Memory-Map Navigator (http://www.memory-map.co.uk/software.htm) as well.

If you want basic and cheap, then Dell is the way to go :)
