I had never used MSN Messenger on my Axim (WinMo 2003 upgrade) until the buzz regarding the new update today. So I installed the update, dusted off my log in and signed in via a bluetooth/gprs connection...no problem.

Got back to my desk and found that I cannot connect via an ActiveSync passthrough connection. I get the following message:

"Logon to MSN Messenger Service failed because the service is not responding. Please try again later"

I have no problem using PIE to surf the web via the Active passthrough connection. I am at work and we do have a firewall. If this the issue?

Any help troubleshooting this would be appreciated...thanks.

On the host computer, go to Activesync. Choose Tools | Options, go to the third page, "Rules". On the bottom, check to see that "Pass Through" is set to "The Internet". And, of course, make sure that you have an internet connection active when you try to connect.

Changed my passthrough setting to "The Internet" and I assume that my connection to the internet via our corporate LAN is working (since I am posting from there  ) but I am still getting the same message. :(

Any other settings to check?

Perhaps it's the firewall, because it definitely works for me. Can you run MSN Messenger from a desktop PC? If you cannot, then it's probably the firewall.

Good thought...I installed MSN Messenger on the desktop this morning and found that I could log in to the service. I asked our I.T. guys and they said they do not block IM traffic since some of our folks use it to communicate between stations. So it would seem that the firewall would not be the issue either.

Any other thoughts? Any PPC settings I might be missing?

Thanks for your help doogald!

I have the exact same problem on a 5450 with 2003. I've tried reinstalling the patch but nothing helps, this sucks! Seems even worse for Smartphone users, as I understand M$ made the messenger update but no update for the Smartphone... Hello! Sounds crazy to me!

On the PPC, on Tools | Options, the accounts page, I have the "Enable MSN Messenger Service" box checked, with my passport account and id set, "Enable Exchange Instant Messenging" is unchecked, and "sign in using this account first" is set to "MSN Messenger Service" (though, obviously, the "Exchange Messenging Service" is grayed out).

Thanks...I compared with my settings and found that I am set up the same way...still no luck. Oh well

Ay my home network of 8pcs 2 laptops and my PPC, we have a lightly implemented firewall, and MSN Messenger works on everything. It must be a problem at your work!

Right...I agree...but what is the problem.

To recap:

1 - Our firewall does not block MSN IM traffic. I.T. told me this and I confirmed by logging into MSN Messenger on my desktop and testing it.

2 - I can connect my PDA to the internet using the Activesync passthrough. To test this I simply opened up PIE and browsed to several webpages.

Our Win2k desktops are somewhat locked down...is there some directory or service that my PDA or Activesync needs to make MSN Messenger work? Maybe there is some administrative rights that I need?

You need to d/l the newest version of MSN Messenger. Further I think it only works on 2k3.

It's working fine on mine now but wouldn't connect otherwise since about six months ago.

Pretty sure I am using the latest version as I had to do the required update prior to 10/15. Was there an update after that?
