Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone Edition customers should update their MSN Messenger clients by downloading the following updates to their devices prior to October 15, 2003 to prevent any MSN Messenger service interruptions."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/resources/msnmessenger/pocketpc.mspx"><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2003/20031007-messenger.gif" /></a><br /><br />The bad news is that it's not an XIP Flash update, but the good news is that it appears to only take up 227 KB of RAM on a Pocket PC 2002 device, and 150 KB on a Windows Mobile 2003. These figures were just pulled out of the air after Janak and I did the install, so don't take them as gospel.

What??? I'm not gospel? ;)

Seriously, it's a very minor update. My only comment is that I hope MS makes it part of future EUUs, as I'll invariably forget to install this one reinstall one day and won't be able to chat with my MSN buddies when I really need to.

An almost 5 MB file for an update that takes less than a quarter meg?

That's Microsoft Installer overhead.

Yeah, I know... it's still stupid, though.

Edit: I just wanted to post that the update installed just fine with no apparent bad side effects. :) (No new features, though, either; it's just a minor security update. I was hoping for at least some graphical emoticons or something. Maybe in the next version. :))

I'm glad it's out. I was getting kicked off it all day long yesterday.

After I installed I logged in and still got the nagging IM. The installer didn't tell me anything about doing a soft reset. But I guess that IS what is needed to apply the patch after it's installed.
And it looks like desktop versions of MSN Messenger recognize the Pocket PC version as a mobile device now.

EDIT: Oh haha! There it is... the desktop installer tells you to do a soft reset after. It was underneath all my other windows. Oops.

The Windows Mobile 2003 update is 222KB on the device. Very minor. I was worried when I saw the ~5MB installer and recalled that the Windows Messenger client for upgraded 3600 iPAQs was nearly 1MB if I recall correctly.

I can live with a quarter of a MB. :)

The link is broken.

Also, for those who have it installed, what differences are there? Does it support emoticons?

I just installed the updated MSN Messenger for PPC2K3 on my h5455 PPC2K3 and the MSN Messenger won't log on. It's telling me the service is NOT available.

I logged on with me PC MSN Messenger 6.0 and the service is available! What could be wrong with it? Do you think I should install the Updated MSN Messenger for PPC2K2 to my H5455 PPC2K3?

Make sure you soft reset. I just did it on my 2215 and it works just fine.

As to the other question - there are no new features. Just getting in compliance with the new MSN messenger communication protocol. Maybe we'll get emoticons in the next release. :D

Glad to see this finally available. I've been getting nagging IMs for days now. I agree that it's stupid to have a 5MB download/installer for a 200K application. And it kind of sucks that we don't get any new features. I was getting kind of excited looking forward to it.

Oh, well. At least I won't get the nag IMs anymore...

Ever since I updated to MSN Messenger 6 on my desktop, I typically have to retry my login 2 or 3 times before it actually lets me into the service. I never had this problem with Messenger 5 or Messenger on PPC/Smartphone.

After the update, now my PPC does the same thing, telling me first the service is unavailable, then saying my username and password are wrong. The third try (which almost always works on the desktop) worked on the PPC as well.

Anyone else seeing this sort of behavior either on the desktop or device?

Not here. I upgraded from Windows Messenger 4.7 to MSN Messenger 6 and have had no problems. It sounds like something with your account. Maybe purging cookies or even unassociating your XP account with Passport then reassociating it will help.

No luck for me. I've removed it, reinstalled it and soft-reseted it more than a couple times and it still won't log on to the service.

Has anyone with a h5455 with PPC2K3 upgrade tried installing the updated MSN Messenger for PPC2K3? Is it logging on to the .NET Messenger Service? My updated MSN Messenger refuses to log on.

Nah I don't think it's anything specific to a machine since it does it on 3 different computers and my PPC.

I think it may have something to do with my passport account itself.

the only new feature is that your IM buddies will see that you are logged in with your mobile device instead of a PC. The new version sends the status as "on mobile device" now. That's cool so that your buddies know that your are using your PPC or PPCPE instead of a desktop device.

For the record, I'm using an iPAQ h5455 upgraded to Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC with the WM2003 MSN Messenger update and I have had zero problems connecting no the first attempt since installing it last night. On the desktop, I have been using Windows Messenger 5 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/) for Windows XP for the last month or so and also have zero problems connecting on the first attempt.

... The new version sends the status as "on mobile device" now. ...
Very cool! Having not sent messages to myself, I hadn't noticed that. Thanks for pointing that out.

Edit: I just logged in on my PPC and looked on another PC running Windows Messenger 5 logged in as my brother and saw nothing to indicate I was using a mobile device. Is that an MSN Messenger 6-specific feature, I wonder?

Does the new version perchance use different port numbers or anything from the previous version? Cuz I'm having loads of fun trying to get it to connect. I have no problems logging in from a desktop. If I restore a known-good backup that doesn't have the new version, i can login fine. But the new version absolutely will not let me login to the service.

I sure hope that they included Proxy support? If not when!

I've tried to download it numerous times yesterday, and numerous times today....the actual download link is broken. Hopefully, come Monday, someone at MS, that was obviously off over the weekend, will notice and fix the problem. Otherwise, the deadline will pass, and at least myself (plus many others I suspect) will not be able to use Messenger on their PPC's at all

I'm thinking maybe the link is broken for a reason. In this case though, the people who are having issues appear to be the vocal minority.

The download link appears to be working again (at least for the 2003 patch). Hopefully, that will last, as someone else said, we'll all need it again in the future as our devices our hard reset (either intentionally or not). To that end, this update *REALLY* needs to be either an XIP or included in some soon to be released ROM updates.

This upgrade broke my Msn connection. It always tells my username password is wrong or the service is unavalible. I'm using and Ipaq 5550.
I've email Msn support for this, and I ope I'll get an answer as I feel I'm not alone in this case

I had the same issue and the "support" I got from MSN support wasn't particularly supportive.

I have the same problem. After updating MSN messenger I can no longer logon -
"logon to MSN messenger service failed becasue the password is incorrect or the logon name does not exist. Enter the correct user name and password and try again. If the problem continues contact MSN"

logon name and password are correct - I've tried them on the desktop and they work fine. Tried a different MSN account, same problem.

Anyone suggestion?
(tried to uninstall the MSN messenger update and re-install, soft reset, etc. - same problem...)

I'm having a similar problem with a iPAQ 3870 that I recently upgraded to PPC2003. I've tried all the usual stuff (soft reset, uninstall etc) but the weird thing is that when I had PPC2002 I installed the update fine and had MSN working only a week ago.

This is a real pain. I like 2003 but will have to revert to 2002 if I can't get this working. Can anyone help?

I do feel that not enough effort has gone into the 2003 build for these older iPAQ's as I've also started getting an error with the blue tooth manager when switching the device back on.

Is the bundled MSN Messenger not working for you?

As for third-party clients, I tried a few of the trial downloads here (http://www.handango.com/SoftwareCatalog.jsp?siteId=1&amp;platformId=2&amp;N=96806+95789) and all seem to work.

Darius,

Neither the MSN with PP2002, or WM2003 work on my handheld. They always give an error about not being able to connect to the service. My internet works fine, so I figured the application was to out of date.

Take care,

I Found this old thread and wonder if some body can help me to find/get "MSN Messenger Update for Pocket PC 2003"
A few years ago I had download this from de Microsoft site, I lost it and now I cannot find it anymore.
Searching with Google gave me some deadlinkt to Microsoft. I thought Pocket PC 2003 was still supported bij Microsoft.
