Hi folks,

I'm new to the PocketPC scene as I am looking to buy my first one. I'm interested in the new Ipaq 2210 and it has an Xscale processor. From what I gather, this is a new processor and it isn't as widespread.

I was wondering if I would be able to run software apps designed for a Strongarm processor on an Xscale processor?

Thanks for your help.

Most StrongArm programs will run on the hp 2215. However, you have to be carefull because some Pocket PC 2002 programs will not run on the Pocket PC 2003 OS.

You can go to this website to check compatability:

I have a 2215 and I highly recommend it :)

Yes, you will (most apps will work)!!!

O.K., beat to the punch again. See the post above for more info about apps and compatability...

Thanks for the quick reply.

For PocketPC 2003 OS, when was it released? I'm a just curious as to when the next version, likely PocketPC 2004, will arrive and if soon, would limit my application support further.

Also, do you think my 2210/2215 will be able to accept an upgrade to the next OS version? How much does it cost for an OS upgrade?

Thanks for your help.

I'm assuming that PPC 2004 comes sometime in Q3 2004, but i'm not sure. HP sould release an upgrade for it because it is one of their enterprise products. The upgrades are traditionally around $30. I seriously recommend you get the 2215. It's really small for having dual expansion slots, consumer IR, ect. It's REALLY REALLY fast and has a great screen.

PPC 2003 was released (i think) in july this year??? (I know someone will correct me if I'm wrong.)

I don't think anyone knows if PPC 2004 will limit application use anymore. But be assured that developers are making all new applications to support PPC 2003. Besides, most PPC 2002 applications work on the 2003 (Much more than listed on that website I gave you) with the exception of very very few.

You said that Pocket PC 2003 can run 2002 softwares... Does that mean that Pocket Pc 2003 programs will also work on pocket pc 2002? I'm just wondering since Toshiba isn't offering the e740 an upgrade to 2003 :(

To date, I don't believe there's any Pocket PC 2003-specific software, and I wouldn't expect it to happen for quite some time.

What are the type of applications that are usually incompatible with PocketPC 2003? Is it to do with certain applications interacting at a low level with the OS, the video driver, etc?

What is it that is causing a lot of these PocketPC 2002 apps to not work on PocketPC 2003?

These are probably really technical questions I'm asking, but thanks to anyone who will try to answer.

I have many games and quite a few utilities on my 2003 based device (221x) and all of them were either compatible right away or had a quick update available to make them compatible. At this point, any software that is released to the market is 2003 and 2002 compatible in almost all cases.
