Hey Everyone,
I have been using iPAQs since he 3150 came out and have owned almost every model in between. However, I recently purchased a 2215 for the expandability, but I have not been impressed with the quality of the unit. In the first month one of the rubber grips fell off the unit. Yesterday, my toddler was coloring on the screen next to me in church and the screen cracked. I could not believe it. All of my iPAQs have weathered daily use, but the 2215 has not been able to do it. Has anyone else had this problem?

That one, my friend, is God telling you to let your toddler listen while in church.
Actually, I have never had any of these problems with my 2215, and I use it everyday while in school. People have said that their side grips do come off, but I have never heard of the screen cracking! Did you toddler accidently step on it or something?
Maybe you should complain to HP. I think their customer service is good.

Um, ppcs are not toys, they're not made to stand up to use by a toddler. Nor should they be expected to!

I wouldn't expect ANY Pocket PC to withstand the hands of a child. Clearly no manufacturer designs thier units for that type of abuse.

It's possible that this person's kid though was gentle enough - and may have used previous PPCs.

Yes, let's not bash him for letting his child use his ppc, Many of the adults I see in my church let their kids doodle on their palms or ppc's.
Although, I must disagree, because the 2215 is the best pda I've had so far, and it has more that sufficed, and I have had 0 problems with it. I also believe you should contact hp, and explain to them your situation.
I have had no problems with my 2215 pda. Letting your child play with it is not a good idea, though. What if your kid dropped it? If he/she is too small to listen to the sermon, give 'em a coloring book. That's what we do.
Contacy HP about it, but I doubt you will find grace about the cracked screen.

Ummmm....there is no such thing as a "gentle" toddler. I won't go into the merits of an PPC-"experienced" toddler!
So says this father of four children, ages 7, 5, 3 & 1.

It's possible, yes, that normally this child is careful. But the fact remains that expecting your PPC to stand up to the heavy doodling hand of a toddler is expecting the impossible, and complaining when it doesn't isn't going to meet with much sympathy from me--why were you letting a toddler play with it in the first place? Just seems irresponsible to me. Now if the screen had broken while YOU were using it, then I could see the complaints.
Regardless, you can still possibly get a replacement under warrantee....I wouldn't mention who was using it when it broke though....

Man,
Who would have thought that I would be bashed for letting my child sit on my lap and doodle on my pocketpc. She did not step on it, she did not drop it, again she was in my lap when it broke.
I did contact HP and they told me to send it in and that would be $165 for the repair. For some reason, they decided to fuse the touch screen and the LCD together so that you cannot just replace one. Oh, and as for customer service, I should not expect to see the unit back for atleast 8 weeks. I have owned a 3100 series all the way through a 3800 series unit and as a pilot I climb in and out of a cockpit all day and have never had a screen crack. My daughter has doodled on my wife's 3630 and has never cracked the screen. Makes you wonder. By the way, she is very gentle with it. Not every kid is a brute.
I contacted someone at pdasmart.com and he worked for Compaq and he told me that they used to use name brand manufacturers for their parts, however, now the companies that they use he has never even heard of. He said that he has had so many calls on the 2215 screen that he sold out in one week and has back orders on the shipment coming in. In fact, he also stated that the screen on his wife's 1910 is made by the same company as the 2215 and it has broken twice when he was writing on it. By the way, he has a one day turn around versus 8 weeks with HP. Now that is customer service.
I have been a loyal fan of Compaq, who did have great customer service, but I have not been impressed with HP. Its too bad they merged.
All I am saying is be careful with you 2215, because based on the facts from someone who is making a living at fixing them, they don't make them like they used too.
P.S. if anyone knows how to get a 14 month old toddler to listen to the speaker in church, tell me because I haven't seen a person successfully do it yet.

Yes expecting a 14 month old to sit still and listen in church is also unreasonable. Getting a babysitter is a much better option!

Look here, man, I don't think any of us here are trying to bash you. The truth is I think it is unwise to let a 14 month old child touch a Pocket PC. Sure, your daughter may be gentle with it, but has it not occurred to you that it may be harder for her to control the amount of pressure she exerts? Giving delicate items to children is never a good thing even if they are quiet and gentle. They simply don't know and they shouldn't be blamed either (I definately realise that you aren't).
Of course it should not be expected that a 14 month old child would listen to the speaker in church. I suggest that you find something more suitable than your Pocket PC. Yes, it is absolutely wrong that they should take at least 8 weeks to fix the screen but I honestly don't think anyone is to blame for your ruined LCD (including HP/Compaq)!

damn those rubber grips. I came out the subway last week and the right one fell off when i pulled it out the case. Call me crazy...but i spent 5 minutes in the darking looking for that thing...I WAS NOT LEAVING WITH OUT IT!!!!! The least they could do is put them up for sale so we can replace them. Diffrent colors wouldn't hurt...i would love to have a neon purple to match my pimping outfit

My 2215 had a defective d-pad and earphone jack within a month of purchase. HP replaced the unit, no questions asked in less than 48 hours
No probs with my second unit.

Okay, I couldn't figure out a way to moderate this thread well, so I've moderated it poorly. If you want to talk about kids in general, those posts are here:

Let's keep the posts in THIS thread about the fragileness or sturdyness of the 2215.

Now that Katie set up the new thread, I don't know where to post... Please feel free to move this thread as you wish. I have a genio e550g and while Tosh does not have a warm place in my heart bc of their lack of upgrades it IS made very sturdilly. My 2 yr old has been playing with it for more than half her life. I installed a program called Kidcolor on it and she loves to use her fingers and fingernails to draw lines of it. Now that she knows colors, she even requests colors to draw with and backgrounds as well. She isn't particularly gentle and I've had no problems with a cracking screen. The screen is furthur protected from scratching by the writeshield screen protector that I use (it's extremely durable as well). She requests kidcolor by saying "blue" (her favorite background color) whenever she wants it.
I'm surprised to hear that a 14 mo old baby is strong enough to crack the screen on a brand new pda. Seems to me that they should be made to be more durable than that. Some people buy them and keep using them for years. (like me). It would suck if it broke after just a little rough usage. It's a tool after all, not a piece of china. It should be durable enough to survive a sloshing in your briefcase or your luggage, no less a little rough play by your kid. If the new HP's are that fragile, sounds like you might want to go w another manufacturer.

ps
I DO have dust under the screen but that happened LONG before my kid ever played with it and was prob a Tosh manufacturing defect.
