It looks like those two depressions near the bottom are in fact buttons, not slots for a screen cover as I had guessed.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/aximX3.gif" /><br /><br />"The Dell Axim X3 specs were a mystery yesterday. Today we have the user guide and pictures of the Axim X3 inside, outside, upside, rightside...well you get the idea. The FCC requires electronics companies to submit all new products for testing and approval. The pictures and documentation from these tests for the Dell Axim X3 have been published to the FCC website, simply click this link to download the manual. This is the guide that will be included with the Axim X3. Below are pictures and specs of the upcoming Axim."

I think that its trying to like a Toshiba, its too squared off at the edges, I like the Axim X5.

And is this model only different to the X5 because it has WiFi integrated?

I knew those side buttons were for something Jason :D

I like the hardware button for turning the WiFil on and off, but having a button on the edge like that isn't so great. My old 5450 had a hardware button for record and I was always inadvertantly recording when the iPAQ was in my holster, even when the iPAQ was turned off

I thought the X3 was going to have a CF slot? I don't see this listed on the diagram.

Nope, the X3 is SD-only.

Nice wrap-up! Glad they went Intel Strata instead of NAND. I bet we see price poitn of 399 with a rebate for 50 when released, also for a dual wireless device it's competition is the HP 5550 and at 399 would be a great deal for a similar device!

The dimensions are way off -- take a look at that section. The 'mm' readings are correct, but the 'in' converts are completely wrong. It is more like 2.99 in x 4.61 in.

But then again, who reads the manual? ;-)

Yeah, I was looking at that and wondering why 76.0mm was bigger than 117.0mm once you convert to inches. ;)

So is strata better than NAND memory?

I know that NAND is used on the upper scale toshibas.

The X3 is close in dimensions to the Viewsonic V37.

V37 - 122mm x 77mm x 13.2mm 139g
X3 - 117mm x 76mm x 14.8mm 138g

Which means it will be considerably easier to manage than the X5, but it's not as small as the HP 19xx series. The Viewsonic battery is 900mAh, whereas the X3 is 950mAh. But, the X3 battery is user-replaceable.
Hopefully the X3 screen will be as nice as the V37's.

I will miss the X5's CF slot. Shame they didn't add a pop-out CF slot, like on the Sony NX series. Or have only a CF Slot, but with a CF-SD(IO) adapter. Not having a CF is not a problem for a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi enabled model, but without included wireless, could be a problem.

Anyone happen to know if there is an SDIO 56k modem (standard V90 type, not Bluetooth)?

Well, then the manual is wrong! I copied them directly from the PDF.

Brighthand: "It was reported yesterday that the user manual submitted to the FCC says that some of these handhelds will also have Bluetooth. However, a separate document notes that none of these will actually have Bluetooth, and reminds the manufacturer to remove the reference from the manual."

According to the FCC comments, there won't be a model with Bluetooth.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I was so looking forward to the Dell PDA offering both Bluetooth & WiFi.

One thing that the manual doesn't make clear is whether or not the SD slot is SDIO. However, given that it is the only expansion slot, it would make sense otherwise you aren't going to be able to add extra bits like Bluetooth.

One thing I spotted from the PDF link above is that it makes reference to SAR testing. This is to do with the radiation emitted by mobile phones, so what have Dell got up their sleeves now?

Hmm ... The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/68/33127.html) seems to think that the SD slot is for memory devices only, but goes on to say that:
pictures of the machine's internals include a Bluetooth SD IO card, though this may be for form factor reference only.
So I'm still none the wiser :-(

Fall 2003 just started last week. They were probably talking about the X7 which I think is supposed to come out around November or December.

AFAIC, (bleep) bluetooth, who needs it? I have a wireless router at home, give me integrated wifi and I'm a happy girl!

I hope they have a X3 with out wifi, just to keep the cost down. BUT if the X3 comes in at $150 AND has wifi, that'd be great !!!

Can't wait to see the exact X3 spec's and options !!!
