Next weekend I'm going on a week-long vacation to Roanoke, VA, to see some family and, hopefully, the start of autumn. Living in South Florida for the last 20 years, I've hardly seen a fall leaf in the last two decades. I'm hoping for a good chill to settle upon VA because their temps have been quite warm lately, and I'd like my four kids to see reds, yellows and golds in the VA trees.

My five-year-old Sharp camcorder is ready to be replaced. The batteries don't hold a charge anymore, and I'd like to get into digital video. I'm looking to spend around $500-$800 for a new camcorder. I'm not beholden to any make of camcorder, though my Sharp did serve well except for one service visit.

Do you have a recommendation? I'm hoping to buy a new camcorder this week before my trip to VA.

Canon ZR60/ZR65/Z70 - something in that line. I found the ZR series to be an excellent intro-level camera when I was writing the digital video book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735618739/jasondunn-20).
