Hi al. I recently picked up a 2215 with a 128mb sd card. I was wondering if I could get some suggestions on buying a wireless card and router for a home network. I'm clueless in the ppc wireless area.

Thanks!!

I have a 2215 with a Socket compact flash wi-fi card. At home, I have a D-link wireless router. They work well together.

I would expect that any name-brand wi-fi card and wireless router (Linksys, D-link, Netgear) would work fine. I've heard that some people have problems with the Microsoft routers, but I can't confirm that.

Setup wasn't a problem. The zero-configuration (?) feature in PPC 2k3 worked great. Just make sure you download the latest drivers; once I installed the new Socket drivers, I was golden.

I don't know if you need to be careful with the SanDisk SD Wi-Fi card (~$95.99). I got it last week and connectivity isn't as great as I thought. I can't compare it to any other card, but it seems pretty slow. I wonder if this has something to do with my D-Link access point/router/printer server :|

I second the Socket/Symbol (same card) recommendation. A report recently said it could be purchased for $99USD after rebate. Make sure you do not install anything but the latest WM2003 drivers.

The Socket card was slower on my old iPaq, but I think that was a function of Pocket IE, slower CPU, and the fact that PPC 2k2 probably wasn't all it could be with wireless connectivity.

I find pages come up quickly with Pocket IE on the 2215. Since I can't really isolate any factors, I can't tell what the main reason is. But I suspect that all three of the factors I mentioned above play into it.

The Socket card is responding well.

I managed to get connected to the campus wireless network today, which was a pleasant surprise.

I just returned my Belkin wireless PDA card because I couldn't get it to work with WEP 128 bit encryption. With encryption off, connecting and websurfing worked great. But with encryption on, I couldn't access any websites (although I am 95% sure I had the configuration right).

It looks like the Socket card might be the way to go. Wondering if anyone has used it with the Netgear MR814v2 wireless router.

I wouldn't buy the Socket card just yet. While lots of people are using it successfully, lots of us are also having major freezing problems with it. Socket has acknowledged the problem and is working on it. It seems to affect only some 2210/2215s and there's no rhyme or reason as to whether or not yours will be affected....

Yup, I printed out the UPS return label for my Socket card today. Fortunately, I tried the Senao drivers for my Linksys WCF12 card and they work much better than the Linksys beta WM2003 driver. I still wish the Socket card would have worked, because it's smaller than the Linksys and uses less power.

For home wireless, I started with a D-Link network and wasn't happy with the range of the router or access point. Switched to Linksys and haven't really had any trouble at all. The lack of WM2003 drivers for their WCF12 card is actually the first complaint I've had with them. Netgear is supposed to be pretty good also. If you have a local Best Buy, they carry Linksys and Netgear, and the 802.11b are really coming down in price. You should be able to get a router and CF card for around $160.

That should give you an idea of whats available, prices, driver issues, compatibility, etc...

Currently, in my iPAQ 2215 I'm using the Ambicom WL1100C-CF available at Circuit City and Best Buy. I'm happy with it. It might not be as "low power" as the Socket card, but it was on the shelf when I got my iPAQ and wireless gear :) and it works.

I have the LinkSys CF card as well. Which Senao driver works with it? Where can I get the LinkSys beta driver?

Thanks :D

:) and it works.

And that's the best reason to use it right there! :)

I use a NetGear MA701 CF WIFI card with my iPaq 2210. It works great with my NetGear Wireless Router configuration at home. I was also able to make it work with most hotspots available (Burger King, Starbucks, etc).

For instances where there is no hotspot nearby, I have an Audiovox RTM-8000 CF GSM/GPRS card. Slower, but together with the NetGear MA701, I can have access to the Internet (almost) anywhere.
